Chapter 1. Introduction
The ThinkSystem VX7Y13 Series server is a 1U rack server that comes with VMware ESXi reinstalled. It is
designed to sim lify vSAN de loyment and management for customers through redefined server
configurations that are o timized around s ecific ty es of workloads, while conforming to best ractices and
com liance guidelines for vSAN.
Note: A VMware vSAN cluster requires a minimum of three or more servers. The best ractice is to use three
or more servers of the same machine ty e and configuration to rovide a balanced and high- erformance
solution.
In addition, the server is designed to utilize the Lenovo system management tools to create a unified
hardware management solution for vSAN de loyments:
• enovo XClarity Administrator, which rovides firmware com liance functionality to ensure that the
VX7Y13 Series servers are running the a ro riate level of firmware for Lenovo XClarity Controller, UEFI,
and PCIe devices.
• enovo XClarity Integrator, which rovides VMware vCenter lug-in functionality so that ThinkSystem
VX7Y13 Series servers can be managed directly from vCenter.
The ThinkSystem VX7Y13 Series hardware is based on the SR630 rack server.
Think Agile VX2320 server
The ThinkAgile VX2320 server is o timized for various ty es of workloads for small and medium sized
businesses. Starting with as few as three nodes to kee your acquisition costs down, the VX Series is
ca able of immense scalability as your needs grow.
Think Agile VX3320 server
The ThinkAgile VX3320 servers is o timized for com ute-heavy workloads.

Typical vSAN architecture
A ty ical vSAN architecture includes three or more servers that are im lemented as a single vSAN cluster.
Each server contributes storage to the vSAN cluster from the local disks on the server:
• Hybrid Cluster – The server rovides a combination of solid state disks (SSDs) for caching and hard disk
drives (HDDs) for storage ca acity.
• All-Flash Cluster – The server rovides SSDs for caching and SSDs for storage ca acity.

VX deployment architecture
When de loying a ThinkSystem VX7Y13 Series solution, the best ractice is to use three or more servers of
the same machine ty e and configuration to rovide a balanced and high- erformance solution.
The systems are connected through switches for management and data:
• A dedicated management network is used by the Lenovo XClarity Administrator to communicate with the
Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC) on each of the ThinkSystem VX7Y13 Series servers.
• A redundant 10Gb s Ethernet network is used for VMware vS here management and vSAN data traffic.
The redundant Ethernet network is im lement through two to -of-rack switches, such as the Lenovo
ThinkSystem NE1032 RackSwitch.

CAUTION:
240 V dc input (input range: 180-300 V dc) is supported in China ON Y. Power
supply with 240 V dc input cannot support hot plugging power cord function.
Before removing the power supply with dc input, please turn off server or
disconnect dc power sources at the breaker panel or by turning off the power
source. Then, remove the power cord.
Environment The server is su orted in the following environment:

(2953 ft), the maximum ambient tem erature value decreases by 1°C (1.8°F)
with every 300 m (984 ft) of altitude increase.

(2953 ft), the maximum ambient tem erature value decreases by 1°C (1.8°F)
with every 175 m (574 ft) of altitude increase.
– ASHRAE class A4: 5–45°C (41–113°F); when the altitude exceeds 900 m
(2953 ft), the maximum ambient tem erature value decreases by 1°C (1.8°F)
with every 125 m (410 ft) of altitude increase.
– Server off: 5–45°C (41–113°F)

Attention: Airborne articulates and reactive gases acting alone or in

Note: Your server com lies with ASHRAE class A2 s ecifications. The server
erformance might be im acted when the o erating tem erature is outside the
ASHRAE A2 s ecifications. De ending on the hardware configuration, some server

ASHRAE class A3 and class A4 s ecifications, the server models must meet the
following hardware configuration requirements at the same time:
• Two ower su lies are installed.
• NVMe drive is not installed.
• NVMe PCIe flash ada ter is not installed.
• P2000 GPU is not installed.
• No P4 GPU is installed in PCIe slot 1.
• No P600 GPU is installed in PCIe slot 2.
• For server models with 2.5-inch drive bays, the RAID su er ca acitor module
cannot be installed on the bottom of the air baffle, but only can be installed on the
chassis.
• The back lane for ten 2.5-inch NVMe drives is not installed.
• The following rocessors are not installed:
– Processors with TDP higher than or equal to 150 watts
– Intel Xeon 4112, 5122, 6126, 6128, 6132, 6134, 6134M, and 8156 rocessors

Management options
Multi le management interfaces are available for managing your ThinkSystem VX7Y13 Series a liance.
enovo XClarity Administrator
Lenovo XClarity Administrator is a centralized, resource-management solution that sim lifies infrastructure
management, s eeds res onses, and enhances the availability of Lenovo server systems and solutions. It
runs as a virtual a liance that automates discovery, inventory, tracking, monitoring, and rovisioning for
server, network, and storage hardware in a secure environment.
Lenovo XClarity Administrator rovides a central interface to erform the following functions for all managed
end oints:

• Manage and monitor hardware. Lenovo XClarity Administrator rovides agent-free hardware
management. It can automatically discover manageable end oints, including server, network, and storage
hardware. Inventory data is collected for managed end oints for an at-a-glance view of the managed
hardware inventory and status.
• Configuration management. You can quickly rovision and re- rovision all of your servers using a
consistent configuration. Configuration settings (such as local storage, I/O ada ters, boot settings,
firmware, orts, and Lenovo XClarity Controller and UEFI settings) are saved as a server attern that can
be a lied to one or more managed servers. When the server atterns are u dated, the changes are
automatically de loyed to the a lied servers.
• Firmware compliance and updates. Firmware management is sim lified by assigning firmware-
com liance olicies to managed end oints. When you create and assign a com liance olicy to managed
end oints, Lenovo XClarity Administrator monitors changes to the inventory for those end oints and flags
any end oints that are out of com liance.
When an end oint is out of com liance, you can use Lenovo XClarity Administrator to a ly and activate
firmware u dates for all devices in that end oint from a re ository of firmware u dates that you manage.
• Operating System deployment. You can use Lenovo XClarity Administrator to manage a re ository of
o erating-system images and to de loy o erating-system images to u to 28 managed servers
concurrently.
• Service and support. You can manually collect diagnostic files, o en a roblem record, and send
diagnostic files to the Lenovo Su ort Center.
Lenovo XClarity Administrator can be integrated into external, higher-level management and automation
latforms through o en REST a lication rogramming interfaces (APIs). Using the REST APIs, Lenovo
XClarity Administrator can easily integrate with your existing management infrastructure. In addition, you can
automate tasks using the PowerShell toolkit or the Python toolkit.

3 XClarity Controller USB connector
De ending on the setting, this connector su orts USB 2.0 function, XClarity Controller management
function, or both.
• If the connector is set for USB 2.0 function, you can attach a device that requires a USB 2.0 connection,
such as a keyboard, a mouse, or a USB storage device.
• If the connector is set for XClarity Controller management function, you can attach a mobile device
installed with the a lication to run XClarity Controller event logs.
• If the connector is set to have both functions, you can ress the ID button for three seconds to switch
between the two functions.
4 USB 3.0 connector
Attach a USB-com atible device, such as a USB keyboard, USB mouse, or USB storage device.
5 Operator information panel
For information about the controls and status LEDs on the o erator information anel, see “O erator
information anel” on age 13.
6 10 Rack latches
If your server is installed in a rack, you can use the rack latches to hel you slide the server out of the rack.
You also can use the rack latches and screws to secure the server in the rack so that the server cannot slide
out, es ecially in vibration- rone areas. For more information, refer to the Rack Installation Guide that comes
with your rail kit.
7 Hot-swap drive bays
The number of the installed drives in your server varies by model. When you install drives, follow the order of
the drive bay numbers.
The EMI integrity and cooling of the server are rotected by having all drive bays occu ied. The vacant drive
bays must be occu ied by drive fillers.

You can ress the ower button to ower on the server when you finish setting u the server. You also can
hold the ower button for several seconds to ower off the server if you cannot shut down the server from
the o erating system. The ower status LED hel s you to determine the current ower status.

2 Network activity ED
The network activity LED on the o erator information anel hel s you identify the network connectivity and
activity.
Status Color Description
On Green The server is connected to a network.
Blinking Green The network is connected and active.
Off None The server is disconnected from the network.
3 System ID button with system ID ED
Use this system ID button and the blue system ID LED to visually locate the server. A system ID LED is also
located on the rear of the server. Each time you ress the system ID button, the state of both the system ID
LEDs changes. The LEDs can be changed to on, blinking, or off. You can also use the Lenovo XClarity

Controller or a remote management rogram to change the state of the system ID LEDs to assist in visually
locating the server among other servers.
If the XClarity Controller USB connector is set to have both the USB 2.0 function and XClarity Controller

4 System error ED
The system error LED hel s you to determine if there are any system errors.

Causes might include but not limited to the

• The voltage of the server reached the
non-critical voltage threshold.
• A fan has been detected to be running at
low s eed.
• A hot-swa fan has been removed.
• The ower su ly has a critical error.
• The ower su ly is not connected to
the ower.

cause of the error.

The hot-swa redundant ower su lies hel you avoid significant interru tion to the o eration of the
system when a ower su ly fails. You can urchase a ower su ly o tion from Lenovo and install the
ower su ly to rovide ower redundancy without turning off the server.
On each ower su ly, there are three status LEDs near the ower cord connector. For information about the
LEDs, see “Rear view LEDs” on age 20.
6 NMI button
Press this button to force a nonmaskable interru t (NMI) to the rocessor. By this way, you can make the
o erating system halt (such as Windows Blue Screen of Death) and take a memory dum . You might have to
use a en or the end of a straightened a er cli to ress the button.
7 USB 3.0 connectors (2)
Used to attach a device that requires a USB 2.0 or 3.0 connection, such as a USB keyboard, USB mouse, or
USB storage device.
8 VGA connector

Used to attach a high- erformance monitor, a direct-drive monitor, or other devices that use a VGA
connector.
9 XClarity Controller network connector
Used to attach an Ethernet cable to manage the system using XClarity Controller.
10 Ethernet connectors on OM adapter (available on some models)
The LOM ada ter rovides two or four extra Ethernet connectors for network connections.
The leftmost Ethernet connector on the LOM ada ter can be set as XClarity Controller network connector. To
set the Ethernet connector as XClarity Controller network connector, start Setu utility, go to BMC Settings
➙ Network Settings ➙ Network Interface Port and select Shared. Then, go to Shared NIC on and select
PHY Card.
