DOCUMENTATION CONVENTIONS
This document is a supplement to the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1). It contains release notes that provide information about the new and
enhanced features of Software Version 1.1. It also includes errata notes for the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1). Refer to the user guide for
general safety, installation, and operating instructions.
The following symbols are used in this document:
Calls attention to a procedure, practice, condition, or the like that, if not correctly performed or adhered to, could
result in damage or destruction to part or all of the product.
Note: Calls attention to information that is essential to highlight.
Represents a menu path. The selections in grey boxes must be made to reach the menu or parameter in the black
box. In the example above, the SETUP, INPUTS, DVD1, and NAME selections must be made to reach the DVD1
INPUT NAME menu. DVD1 is used as an example throughout these release notes. Whenever it appears in a menu
path, any other input (e.g. DVD2) may be substituted.

ZONE2 IN (ANLG, DIGITAL, DMIX)
The ZONE2 IN parameter replaces the INPUT SELECT parameter
that was available on the ZONE 2 ADV menu. (The ZONE 2 ADV
menu is no longer available.) It can be used to select the input
source for the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS.
When set to ANLG . . .
• The ANALOG IN connector specified in the INPUT SETUP menu
is sent to the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS.
• The 5.1 analog input is not compatible with the ZONE 2
AUDIO OUTPUTS.
• Audio will not be available in Zone 2 when the 5.1 analog
input is selected for the Main Zone. However, audio will be
available in Zone 2 when the 5.1a BYPASS listening mode is
selected for the Main Zone.
REVISED INPUT SETUP MENUS
The INPUT SETUP menus (such as the DVD1 INPUT SETUP menu
pictured above) now include 5.1a, ZONE2 IN, and RECORD IN
parameters.
5.1a
Selecting 5.1a accesses the 5.1a MODE menu (pictured above),
which can be used to select a preferred listening mode for 5.1
analog input sources. Descriptions of the new 5.1a listening modes
begin on page 8.

Likewise, whenever “DVD1” appears in a menu path, any
other input may be substituted.
When set to DIGITAL . . .
• The DIGITAL IN connector specified in the INPUT SETUP menu
is sent to the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS.
• Only PCM digital input sources are compatible with the ZONE
2 AUDIO OUTPUTS.
• Audio will not be available in Zone 2 when a Dolby Digital,
dts(-ES), or unknown digital input source is present.
When set to DMIX . . .
• A 2-channel downmixed version of Main Zone audio is sent to
the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS. Downmixes can be generated
for Dolby Digital, dts(-ES), and 5.1 analog input sources. To
generate a downmix, the input that is selected in Zone 2 must
also be selected in the Main Zone (e.g. DVD1). Otherwise, the
ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS will mute. Downmixes cannot be
generated when the 5.1a BYPASS listening mode is selected in
the Main Zone.
• It is recommended to set the ZONE2 IN parameter to DMIX
when recording from a DVD player without built-in Dolby
Digital or dts(-ES) decoding to a VCR or PVR (i.e. Tivo® or
Replay TV®).
Note:
For Dolby Digital input sources, it is recommended to
set the ZONE2 IN parameter to analog. For dts(-ES)
input sources, it is recommended to set the ZONE2 IN
parameter to DMIX. When set to DIGITAL, the unit
recognizes dts-encoded CDs as audio signals (not
data signals) and outputs loud digital noise from the
ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS .
Note:
If the INPUT SELECT parameter on the
ZONE 2 ADV menu is set to AUTO in
Software Version 1.0, the ZONE2 IN
parameter will be set to DMIX when
Software Version 1.1 is installed. In
Software Version 1.0, the INPUT SELECT
parameter defaults to the AUTO setting
for the LD, TV, SAT, PVR, GAME, and TAPE
inputs. If the default setting has not been
changed, the ZONE2 IN parameter will
automatically be set to DMIX for these
inputs when the new software is installed.

• Analog input sources are sent to the analog-to-digital
converter, then the RECORD AUDIO OUTPUT labelled S/PDIF.
When set to DIGITAL . . .
• The DIGITAL IN connector specified in the INPUT SETUP menu
is sent to the RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS.
• Only PCM digital input sources are compatible with the
RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS.
• Audio will not be available in the Record Zone when a Dolby
Digital, dts(-ES), or unknown digital input source is present.
When set to DMIX . . .
• A 2-channel downmixed version of Main Zone audio is sent to
the RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS. Downmixes can be generated
for Dolby Digital, dts(-ES), and 5.1 analog input sources. To
generate a downmix, the input that is selected in the Record
Zone must also be selected in the Main Zone (e.g. DVD1).
RECORD IN (ANLG, DIGITAL, DMIX)
The RECORD IN parameter replaces the INPUT SELECT parameter
that was available on the RECORD ADV menu. (Other RECORD
ADV menu parameters are still available.) It can be used to select
the input source for the RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS.
When set to ANLG . . .
• The ANALOG IN connector specified in the INPUT SETUP menu
is sent to the RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS.
• The 5.1 analog input is not compatible with the RECORD
AUDIO OUTPUTS. Audio will not be available in the Record
Zone when the 5.1 analog input is selected for the Main Zone.
• The RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS are not available if a 5.1a
listening mode is selected in the Main Zone. However, audio
will be available in the Record Zone when the 5.1a BYPASS
listening mode is selected for the Main Zone.

Note:
If the INPUT SELECT parameter on the
RECORD ADV menu is set to AUTO in
Software Version 1.0, the RECORD IN
parameter will be set to DMIX when
Software Version 1.1 is installed. In
Software Version 1.0, the INPUT SELECT
parameter defaults to the AUTO setting
for the LD, TV, SAT, PVR, GAME, and TAPE
inputs. If the default setting has not been
changed, the RECORD IN parameter will
automatically be set to DMIX for these
inputs when the new software is installed.

listening mode is selected in the Main Zone.
• It is recommended to set the RECORD IN parameter to DMIX
when recording from a DVD player without built-in Dolby

NEW LISTENING MODES
New listening modes are available for PCM and 5.1 analog input
sources. The 5.1 analog listening modes are only available when
using the 5.1 analog input with analog-to-digital conversion and
internal processing. Descriptions of these listening modes begin in
the next column. An alphabetical glossary of listening mode
parameters begins on page 11 of this document and on page 5-20
of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1).
Note:
The 5.1 BYPASS listening mode is now called the 5.1a
BYPASS listening mode.
dts NEO:6 FILM
• Designed for playback of matrix-encoded PCM digital stereo
film sources.
• Systems that include side and rear channels will derive six
separate channels (rear channels will be in parallel) and
systems with only side or rear channels will derive five separate
channels. The .1 subwoofer channel is generated through bass
management in the unit.

• Designed for playback of 5.1 analog film sources.
• Converts the 5.1 analog input into digital audio for internal
LOGIC7 decoding.
• Derives seven channels from the 5.1 analog input.

5.1a THX SurEX
• Designed for playback of 5.1 analog film sources.
• Converts the 5.1 analog input into digital audio for
internal THX processing, allowing the 5.1 analog input to utilize
Surround EX decoding, re-equalization, bass management,
audio controls, crossovers, and speaker distance calibration.

5.1a 2-CHANNEL
• Designed for recording 5.1 analog sources to stereo recording
devices.
• Converts the 5.1 analog input into digital audio, using a
LOGIC7-encoding process to downmix it to two channels. This
is recommended for recording from a DVD-A or multi-channel
SACD player to a CD-R.

5.1a STANDARD
• Designed for playback of 5.1 analog sources.
• Converts the 5.1 analog input into digital audio for
internal processing. This allows the 5.1 analog input to utilize
bass management, audio controls, crossovers, and speaker
distance calibration. When these features are not utilized, this
listening mode is similar to the 5.1a BYPASS listening mode.
• Sends identical signals (with appropriate time delay) to the
SIDE L and REAR L outputs, as well as the SIDE R and REAR R
outputs.
