Section 2. Using the LI-570
Powering the LI-570
The LI-570 receives power through the 3-pin power connector. A 3-socket connector
is packaged with the LI-570 unit. Assemble the connector and attach it to a power
supply to power on the LI-570.
A suitable power cable will have two 20 AWG (0.5 mm cross-section) wire leads
with an outer diameter from 4.2 to 5 mm (required for ingress protection). The wire
gauge for the power connector must be large enough to handle the maximum cur-
rent requirements of the LI-570, connected instruments, GPS receiver, and radio.

The total power required by the LI-570 is dependent on the number and types of
instruments connected.
2-2 Using the LI-570 TriSonica™ Data Logger

Connecting devices to the data logger
The LI-570 serial input connector uses the same 12-socket connector found at the
base of the LI-560 and LI-550P sensors. Figure 2-3 on the next page shows the socket
assignments on the connector.
Note: Make sure that each LI-570 external connection port is either connected to
a sealed cable or is covered by cap. Do not apply power to the LI-570 in wet con-
ditions if any external connection ports are exposed.
Connecting TriSonica™ anemometers
Connect the LI-550P and LI-560 anemometers to the data logger using double-ter-
minated cables. The 571D-1, 571D-10, and 571D-C cables are symmetrical - either
end can be connected to the LI-570 instrument connector and the LI-550P or LI-560
sensor. Power is supplied by the LI-570.
Connecting other serial instruments
A serial instrument other than a TriSonica™ anemometer may be connected to the
LI-570 by wiring the serial instrument to a 12-pin single-terminated cable with
blunt-cut end. Table 2-2 on the next page gives the signal names and wire colors for
the 12-pin cable. Assemble the cable connector as described to ensure that the con-
nector is protected from water.

Assembling cable connectors
Connectors are shipped ready for assembly to a user-supplied cable. For most con-
nections, 22 AWG wire (0.33 mm2) will work. The largest compatible wire is 20
AWG (0.52 mm2).
1Trim the cable to the desired length.
2Remove about 10 mm of insulation from the end of the cable and strip 2 mm of insulation off of
each wire.
3Twist the strands of each wire just enough to prevent unraveling.
4Assemble the connector components and cable.
Insert the cable through the shell, strain relief, bushing, spring, and locking collar in
the order shown.
5Solder the wires to contacts.
For each pin and wire, set the wire in the solder cup and secure it with a small
amount of solder.
6Assemble the connector.
Align the components and slide them together. Tighten the shell snugly over the
contact assembly.
7Optional: Check the connections with an ohm meter.
There should be no resistance across connected pins and infinite resistance across the
pins that are not connected.

Section 3.
The data stream and data files
This chapter describes options for recording data to the LI-570 SD card, as well as
the data stream produced by the LI-570 unit. Many variables shown in the data
stream can be turned on or off, adjusted, or formatted in the Menu Interface Mode
(MIM) or the Command-Line Interface (CLI). Instructions for formatting the data
stream variables are found in Configuring in menu-interface mode on page4-1 and Con-
figuring with the command-line interface on page5-1.
Serial communication settings
The default baud rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits are specific to the port in use.
The LI-570 starts collecting data one second after power up and outputs data con-
tinuously when in Sampling Mode.

Serial data format
While in sampling mode, the LI-570 reads data from each attached instrument and
reports it in an output line. Serial instruments (ports 1 to 4) are first, followed GPS
data parameters. Each output line is a single record containing all the collected para-
meters from a single sample of all the inputs. The LI-570 output is an ASCII string
ending with carriage return and line feed characters (see Figure 3-1 below).
The parameters on an output line are separated by a configurable delimiter. The
default delimiter is a space. An optional user-defined tag identifies the serial instru-
ment associated with the serial stream; this can be turned on or off for each para-
meter. Tags and parameters that are output from connected instruments are
determined by that instrument configuration; tags and parameters from the data log-
ger are described in Data and menus on page4-2.
Note: The LI-570 does not interpret or modify the instrument data.
Figure 3-1. Measurements from connected serial devices are first, followed by parameters
added by the logger.
3-2 Using the LI-570 TriSonica™ Data Logger

Time tagging
An optional time tag can be written at the beginning of each line of collected data.
The time tag is enabled and formatted using the Menu Interface Mode or Com-
mand-line Interface. There is an additional option to select millisecond resolution of
the time tag (see Time options on page4-11).
GPS data
GPS receivers send multiple NMEA0168 sentences every second. The LI-570 receives
and organizes these sentences to show the GPS data as a single instrument in the out-
put data stream. GPS data is shown in the data stream after data from instrument
ports (see GPS settings on page4-7).
Missing instrument data
The LI-570 can be configured to replace missing data from an instrument with a
user-specified string or the last good data. This is configured in the Menu Interface
Mode (see Serial setup on page4-4) or Command-line Interface (see missingdata on
page5-5).
Retrieving data
Data are recorded as plain text files to a user-supplied internal SD card. To retrieve
the data, open the LI-570 box, eject the card, and read the files on a computer.
Files are created according to user-settable parameters, including the time span for
each data file, directory name, and a prefix to be used for each file name. File names
also can be configured to include the time and date. See Storage options on page4-9.
