Parkyourvehicleinanareawithanunobstructedviewofthesouthwesternsky.(Thisismandatoryfor
obtainingaconnectionwiththesatellite.)Itispreferabletoavoidallobstructionswithinthree(3)
metersoftheantenna;obstructionslessthansix(6)inchesindiametercanbeignoredbeyondthis
distance.Itisrecommendedthattheantennabeplacedasfarawayaspossiblefromanyotherantennas
ordevicesemittingradiofrequency(R/F)signals.
Openthego‐kit.Removetheantennabygrabbingitnearoneofthethreemagnetsandpulling;when
oneofthemagnetsisloose,theothersareeasiertoremove.(Note:Themagnetsarepowerfulandwill
provideresistance.)
Placetheantennaontheroofofthevehicle,orientedsothattheantenna’scableoutletisfacingyou.It
isimportanttomakesuretheantennaisplacedonalevel,firmmetalsurface.Themagnetsarevery
powerful;becarefulnottogetyourfingerspinchedbetweentheantennaandthemountingsurfaceas
themagnetsattachtothesurface.
Removethe12V“cigarettelighter”adaptercable.Inserttheappropriateendofthecableintothego‐
kit,makingsuretoplugthecableintotheoutletlabeledInput12VDC;connecttheoppositeendintothe
vehicle’s12Vreceptacle.(NOTE:Dependingonyourvehicle,yourvehiclemayneedtobeturnedonto
providepowertothe12Vreceptacle).Connectthehandsettothego‐kit.Connecttheantennatothe
go‐kitwiththecoaxialcable;screwoneendontotheantennaandtheotherendintothego‐kit.Power
onthego‐kit,

Ifthehandsetdoesnotpoweronwhenthedesktopunitisswitchedon,pressthehandset’spower
button,locatedontheupperleftcornerofthehandset;releasethepowerbuttonwhenthe“MSAT”
logoappearsonthedisplay.Thehandsetdisplaywillilluminatetoindicatethatitisactive.
Oncethehandsetisactivatedandlockedontothesatellite,anLCDdisplaysimilartotheimagebelow
shouldappear.“B1”indicatesthattheMSAT‐G2islockedontoLightSquared’sbeam#1overtheEast
Coast(see“NetworkCoverage”section,below,formoredetails).“S99”indicatestheMSAT‐G2hasa
signalstrengthof99outofapossible99withtheLightSquaredsatellite.
Youshouldnowbereadytomakeacall.

Push‐to‐Talk(PTT)
SelectingaTalkgroup
“DispatchRadio,”or“Push‐to‐Talk”(PTT)modeisthedefaultmodeforthehandset.(The“DR”inthe
upperrightcornerofthehandsetdisplayindicatesthismode.)TousePTTmode,pickupthehandset
andselecta“talkgroup.”(Note:Ifthehandsetiscurrentlysettothetalkgroupyouwant,skipthisstep.)
Anormaltalkgroupcanbeselectedasfollows:
•PresstheGROUPsoftkey(i.e.,therightside“Minus”signkey)onthehandsetandscroll
throughthetalkgroupswiththeup/downarrowkeysuntilthedesiredtalkgroupisilluminated.
•PresstheGROUPsoftkeyagaintoselectthedesiredtalkgroup.
Aprivatetalkgroupforone‐to‐onepush‐to‐talkoperationcanbeselectedasfollows:
•PresstheGROUPsoftkey(i.e.,therightside“Minus”signkey)onthehandsetandscrolltothe
PrivateModetalkgroup(tag00)usingtheup/downarrowkeys.
•PresstheGROUPsoftkeyagaintoSELECTtalkgroup00,anda“?”willappearonthedisplay
screen.Enterthefour‐digitDirectoryNumber(DN)oftheradioyouwanttocall.
Note:ToquicklychangetheDNwhiletheradioisidle,pressthe#keytoclearapreviouslyusedDN.
YouwillbepromptedtoenteranewDN.

MakingaPTTCall
Onceyouhaveselectedatalkgroup,youcanmakeaPTTcallbypressingandholdingthelargePTT
buttonontheleftsideofthehandset.“CALLING”willappearonthehandset. Whenthetalkgroupyou
arecallingisconnected,youwillhearadoubletone,andthescreenwillchangefrom“CALLING”to
“USERON.”

YoumustcontinuetopressthePTTbuttontotransmityourvoice.Onceyouarefinishedspeaking,
releasethePTTbuttontoallowotherstospeak.Thehandsetwillthendisplay“VACANT.”Whenthereis
nocurrentuserholdingthePTTbutton,“VACANT”willbedisplayedonyourhandsetaswellasallother
handsetsparticipatinginthePTT.Ifthetalkgroupremainsvacantformorethan10seconds,the
talkgroupwillbedroppedfromthenetwork.

WhenanotheruserbecomestheactivespeakerbypressingandholdingthePTTbutton,thatuser’s
directorynumber(DN)willbedisplayedonyourhandset.OncethatuserreleasesthePTTbutton,
“Vacant”willonceagainbedisplayedonthehandset.

Priority1Interrupt
Priority1Interruptisapush‐to‐talkfeaturethatallowsausertodotwothings:
1. Priority1Interruptallowstheuser“hands‐free”push‐to‐talk(i.e.,abilitytotransmitwithout
holdingthePTTbutton)forupto30seconds.Itcanbeprogrammedtooperateonthe
talkgrouptowhichtheradioistunedoritcanbeprogrammedtobringanothertalkgroupupon
theairforanemergencybroadcast,hands‐freeforupto30seconds.
2. Priority1Interruptcanbeengagedtotakethetalkgroupawayfromauseroroverridea“hot
mike”fromanotherradiothathasbeenaccidentallykeyed.Inthiscase,allusersonthe
talkgroupwillhearabroadcastinterruption.
ToinitiatetheP1Interrupt,pressthe“P1”buttonlocatedbetweenthe“Power”andthe“PTT”button
ontheleftsideofthehandset.Theuserwillsee“CALLING”appearonthedisplayscreenfollowedby
“USERON.”Atthistime,theP1buttoncanbereleased,andtheusercanspeakfor30secondswithout
depressinganybuttons.The30‐secondtimercanbecanceledbypressingandreleasingthelargerPTT
button.

MonitorCodes
WhentheMSAT‐G2isidleinPTTmode,itcanbeprogrammedtoselectivelyscantheunit’s
programmedtalkgoups.Iftheunitisactivelyengagedonatalkgroup,scanningisdisengagedandwill
notinterruptthattalkgroup.Theradiomustbeat“rest”forscanningtooccur.Ascanningcode
(LightSquaredcallsita“monitorcode”)willpulltheradiooffthetalkgrouptowhichitistunedforas
longasthescannedtalkgroupremainsupandontheair.Oncethetalkgroupdropsoff,theradioreverts
tothetalkgrouponwhichitwassitting(tuned),andscanningresumes.Thesescanningcodescannotbe
userprogrammed.Theymustbedownloadedtotheradiofromthesatellitenetwork.Alltalkgoupsare
downloadedwithamonitorcode;thiscodedetermineswhetheratalkgoup’sradiotrafficwillbepicked
upbytheMSAT‐G2’sscanfunction.
•MonitorCode“0”(LOW):LightSquareddownloadsalltalkgroupswithMonitorCode“0”
unlessotherwiserequested.AnytalkgroupwithMonitorCode”0”assignedtoitwillonly
hearthattalkgroupwhentheradioistunedtothattalkgroup.
•MonitorCode“1”(MEDIUM)andMonitorCode“3”(HIGH):BothoftheseMonitorCode
levelswillprompttheradiotoconstantlyscanwhileatrestforanytalkgroupswiththese
MonitorCodesassignedtothem.Whicheverscannedtalkgroupcomesupontheairfirst
willengagetheradio,disableanyfurtherscanning,andkeeptheradioengagedonthat
talkgroupuntilthetalkgroupdropsoffthenetwork,atwhichtimescanningwillcontinue.
ThedifferencebetweenMonitorCodes“1”and“3”isthatscanningofanytalkgroupwith
MonitorCode“1”canbedisabledatthehandset;scanningforanytalkgroupwithMonitor
Code“3”cannotbedisabled.

Todisablescanningfortalkgroupswithamonitorcodeof“1,”presstheuparrowkey;apadlockicon
shouldappearatthetopofthehandsetdisplayand;theword“unlock”shouldappearatthebottomof
thedisplayscreen.(Theword“unlock”or“lock”atthebottomofthescreenindicateswhatisgoingto
happenthenexttimetheuparrowkeyispressed.)Whenthepadlockiconappears,scanningofall
talkgroupswithaMonitorCode“1”islockedordisabled.Pressingtheuparrowkeyagainwillremove
thepadlockicon,andtheword“lock”shouldappearatthebottomofthedisplayscreen.

TelephonyService
LightSquared’stelephonyserviceisfullduplex,socallerscantalkatthesametime,justastheycanona
landlineorwirelessphonecall.LimiteddirectoryassistanceisavailabletousersviatheLightSquared
customerserviceteam,butothercallmanagementfeatures(suchasGPStracking,voicemail,call
waiting,callforwarding,callblocking,andconferencecalling)arenotenabledbymostcustomersfor
LightSquareddevices.AllLightSquareddevicesareconfiguredtosupportinternationaldialing.Tocall
anyinternationalphonenumberfromaLightSquareddevice,dial(011)+(countrycode)+(exchange)+
(number).
LightSquaredphonesareprogrammedwithNorthAmericantelephonenumbers,souserswillhavethe
samedialingexperienceastheywouldwithanylandlineorcellphone.LightSquaredassignsbothatoll‐
freeandanon‐toll‐freenumber(currentlyineitherthe703or571areacodes)toitsunits,so
governmentandpublicsafetycustomerscancallthephoneswithaGovernmentEmergency
TelecommunicationsService(GETS)card.(Toll‐freenumberscannotbecalledwithaGETScard.)
ThetelephonyserviceiscompatiblewithGETSintwoadditionalways:
1. LightSquaredhasinstalledadedicatedT1exclusivelyforoutgoingGETScallsfromtheMSAT‐G2.
If,duringamassivedisaster,youseeCALLFAILUREdisplayedonthehandset,itmaybethat
LightSquared’soutgoingtelephonecircuitsarecongested.Toaccesstheoutgoingswitchcircuits
reservedforpublicsafetyuse,dialthecallwithaGETScard,andthecallwillbeplacedoveran
emergencyT1circuitoutofLightSquared’sswitch.
2. TheGETScardwillalsoallowyoutobypassthenetworkcontrolsoncertainareacodesthatare
enabledonthePublicSwitchedTelephoneNetwork(PSTN)duringdisastersevenif
LightSquared’scircuitsarenotcongested.

Placing/ReceivingaCall
ToreceiveatelephonecallwhenINCOMINGCALLisdisplayedonthehandsetandyouhearanaudible
ringing,presstheSENDbutton(markedwithgreenlettering).Toendthecall,presstheENDbutton
(markedwithredlettering).
Note:Telephonecallscanbedialed/receivedinPTTmodewhentheradioisidle.
Toplaceatelephonecall:
•Usethedialpadtoenterthedesired10‐digitnumber(areacode+number)andpresstheSEND
button(markedwithgreenlettering).
•Toendthecall,presstheENDbutton(markedwithredlettering).
WhenmakingacallbetweentwoMSAT‐G2s,usetheMSAT‐G2’sassociatedareacode(500)tomakethe
call.Usingthe500areacodekeepsthephonecallinsidetheLightSquarednetworkandthecallgoes
throughfasterthanifcallingthetoll‐freenumber.
WhenmakingacallfromaMSAT‐G2toanysatellitephoneprogrammedwithaninternationalphone
numberortoanyotherinternationalphonenumber(i.e.,onethatdoesnotusetheNorthAmerican
numbering/dialingplan),dial(011)+(countrycode)+(exchange)+(number).
WhendialingfromaregularphonetoaMSAT‐G2unit,usethefollowingdialingprocedure:
1. AttempttomakethecallbydialingtheMSAT‐G2’stoll‐freenumber
2. Ifunsuccessful,attempttodialusingtheMSAT‐G2’snon‐toll‐freenumber(currentlyareacode
703or571).
3. Asafinalresort,dialusingtheMSAT‐G2’snon‐toll‐freenumber[(703)or(571)]withaGETSCard
4. IfcallingtheMSAT‐G2fromanytelephoneprogrammedwithaninternationalphonenumber
(suchasanIridiumphone),thecallmustbeplacedtotheMSAT‐G2’snontoll‐freenumber;
Americantoll‐freenumberscannotbecalledfromaphonenumberthatisnotontheNorth
Americannumberingplan.
BecauseAutomaticNumberIdentification(ANIor“CallerID”)isnottransmittedbytheLightSquared
network,callsfromtheMSAT‐G2willbeblockedbyanyphonenumberwithBlockedCallerIDrejection
service.

Center.TheoperatorwillattempttoassistyouusingInternetyellow/whitepages;youwillnotbe
connectedwitha“true”411service.All411callsarefree.
911–Whendialing911withtheMSAT‐G2,youwillnotbedirectlyconnectedwith911inyourarea.
InsteadthecallwillbedirectedtoanIntradoemergencycallinterceptcenter,whichwillthenpatchyou
throughto911inyourarea.BecauseLightSquaredequipmentdoesnottransmitAutomaticLocation
Information(ALI)orAutomaticNumberIdentification(ANI)whenmakingtelephonecalls,youwillneed
toprovidethecallcenterwithyourcurrentaddressorGPSlocationforthemtoidentifytheappropriate
911Centerforyourneeds.(Youcanalsocallyourlocal911CenterorPublicSafetyAnsweringPointif
youhavethatdirect‐dialtelephonenumber.)All911callsarefree.

UnitMaintenanceandStorage
YoumustfollowsomeimportantmaintenanceandstorageprocedurestoensurethattheMSAT‐G2go‐
kitiskeptinworkingorder.
WhenyoufinishusingtheMSAT‐G2go‐kit,itisimportantto:
•Makesurethego‐kitispoweredoff.Theantennaisprogrammedtosearchuntilasignalis
found.Iftheantennaisstillrunningandstoredinalocationwhereasignalcannotbefound,it
willcontinuetosearchforasignaluntiltheantennamotorburnsout.
•Makesurethego‐kitisconstantlypluggedintoapowersourcewhenitisbeingstoredforan
extendedperiod.Thego‐kit’sbatterywillslowlydepleteovertime.Toavoidbatterydepletion,
continuallychargetheunitwhenitisnotinuse.Aconstantlychargedbatteryhasalonger
lifetimebeforereplacementisrequiredthanabatterythatisintermittentlycharged.
•Whenstoringtheantennacable,coilitinlargeloopstopreventkinksinthewirethatcan
damagethecable.
•Makesurethatallcomponentsexposedtotheelementsarecleananddrybeforestoringin
thego‐kit.
•Ifshippingthego‐kit,makesuretopackageitinashippingcontainerorpaddedbox.Thego‐
kitisdesignedtoenduredailyusewithassociatedbumpsbutwillnotsurviveanairline’sor
shipper’shandlingwithoutprotectivepackaging.

(seeillustrationbelow).
AllSMARTgroups(discussedbelow)providePTTserviceacrossalleight(8)beams.

LightSquaredhascreatedbothnationwideandregionalSMARTgroups.SMARTstandsforSatellite
MutualAidRadioTalkgroupandprovidesafreetalkgoupforallqualifyingusers.Unlikeagencyowned
talkgroups,allSMARTgroupscanbeusedforPTTserviceinalleight(8)ofLightSquared’scoverage
beams.
NationwideSMARTGroups
EachgovernmentagencyorpublicsafetyjurisdictionqualifiesforoneormorenationwideSMART
groups.

Q. MyMSAT‐G2desktopunitisnotreceivingpower(thechargeindicatorisnotlitup).
A. Makesurethepowercordisproperlyconnectedatbothends.Ifthecordisproperlyconnected
andthechargeindicatorstilldoesnotilluminate,checktoseeiftheMSAT‐G2willpowerup.Ifit
does,theindicatorlightissimplyburnedout.Ifyouknowthereispowerattheelectricaloutlet,
theindicatorlightisnotilluminating,andtheMSAT‐G2won’tpoweron,thedesktopunit
probablyneedstobereturnedtothemanufacturerforrepair.
Q. MyMSAT‐G2desktopunitisreceivingpowerandthedesktopunit’spowerswitchisintheon
positionandilluminated,butthehandsetdidnotturnon.
A. Pressthepowerbuttononthetopleftofthehandset.Thehandsethasitsownpowerbutton,
andwhenleftintheonposition,thehandsetwillautomaticallypowerupwhenthedesktop
powerswitchisturnedon.Ifpressingthepowerbuttondoesnotpowerupthehandset,check

time.

A. Dialingthe500areacodeenablestheMSAT‐G2unitstoconnectwitheachotherdirectlyon
LightSquared’sinternalnetworkwithouttouchingthePSTN.Ifacallisplacedusingthetoll‐free
