APPLICATIONS

BMS

The areas of applicaon for this especially
manufactured for staonary or mobile  use
lithiumbaeryareverymanifold.Especially
caravans,solar,e-boats,electric-scooter,golf
carts or even electromobiles/wheelchairs
and cleaning machines are more and more
equipped with it.
The baerie-management-system (BMS)
installedineachbaeryensuresthebaerie
switches o in case of e.g. undervoltge or
overloadandautomacallyswitchesonagain
when the problem is solved.
LiFePo4 baeries have a very high charge /
discharge eciency.  Accordingly, a LiFePo4
baerycanusemostofthesuppliedenergy
andonlyaasmalllossofenergyispresent.
 

The dimensions of the housing are idencal
to themostcommonAGM,leadacidorGEL
baeries. With oponally available round
pole, exisng terminals can be reused. An
exchangeofthebaeryholderorachange
ofthechargingstructureisnotnecessary.
The convenient integrated Bluetooth interface
allows to monitor the baery status at any
meviayoursmartphoneortablet(Androidor
AppleiOS-moreaboutLiontronApponp.10).
Other complex wired baery monitors are
not longer necessary and all important data
ofthe baeryand cells is readytohand.
Waingforeverunlthebaerisfullycharged
isnotneededanylonger.TheLiFePo4baery
chargesupto10mesfasterthanconvenal
lead-acidbaeries.Evenforinstallaonexisng
chargecontrollersorchargercansllbeused.
Inordertoachieveastablevoltagesupplyevenunderheavyloads,alithiumbaeryisanidealreplacement
foralead-acidbaery.Inaddiontotheextremelyhighweightadvantage,italsooersenormousenergy
reserves.DuetotheintegratedBMS(baerymanagementsystem),lithiumbaeriesaresuitablefor12V
/24VDCapplicaons.AnincreaseofcapacitybyusingaddionalLiontronLiFePo4baeriescanbeeasily
done.
Lithium-iron-phosphatebaeriesarethesafestoftheregularlithiumbaeriytypes.Thenominalvoltageofa
LiFePO4cellis3.2V.Thereforeone12,8VLiFePO4baeryconsistsoffourcellsinserialconnecon.

Cellsinabaeryareneverequalfor100%.Forthisreason,somecellsareearlierfullchargedordischarged
thanothersinacycle.Thesedierencesbecomemorestrongerifthecellsarenotequalizedfrommeto
me.
Inlead-acid-baeriesasmallcurrentsllowsevenwhenoneormorecellsarefullycharged(themain
eectofthiscurrentissplingofwaterintowaterandoxygen).Withthehelpofthiscurrent,theother
cells, whose state of charge is lagging behind, are also charged and so the state of charge of all cells is
balanced.
ThecurrentowingthroughaLiFePO4cellisnearlyzerowhenitisfullycharged.Lesschargedcellswillnot
befullychargedforthisreason.Overme,thedierncebetweenindividualcellscanbecomeextremehigh,
sosomecellswillfailduetoover-orundervoltage,eveniftheoverallvoltageofthebaeryiswithinlimits.
ThisiswhyacvecellbalancingisbuiltintoallofourLiFePO4baeries.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS OF A BMS ARE:
-Proteconofcellsagainstundervoltagebyswitchingotheloadinme.
-Proteconofcellsagainstovervoltagebyreducingchargingcurrentorratherswitchingothe
charging process.
-Shuothesystemincaseofovertemperature.
-Chargingofthebaeryisstoppedincaseofundertemperature.
Therfore,aBMSisessenalforprevenngdamagetolithiumbaeries.

Ifthereareseveralbaeries,thebaeriescanbe
clearlydieredbytheserialnumber.Youwillnd
theserialnumberonasckeronthebaerycase.
Aer successful connecon, you will receive all
relevantvaluesforyourbaeryatoneview.
Incaseoffault,thestatusofthebaeryisshown
onthedisplaywihacorrespondingmessage,e.g.
„overvoltage“ or „undervoltage“.
As part of quality assurance, the baeries
and the installed components are subject to
regular checks before sale. Some charging and
dischargingcyclesareabsolutelynormalandno
reason for concern.

baerybytheterminals,onlybythehandles.
ThebaeriesaretestedinaccordancewiththeUNmanualoftestsandcriteria,partIII,subsecon38.3
(ST/SG/AC.10/11/version5).Withregardstotransport,thebaeriesbelongtocategoryUN3480,class9,
packinggroupII.Thecorrespondingregulaonsmustbeobserved.Thismeansfortransportbylandorwater
(ADR,RID&IMDG)theymustbepackedinaccordancewithpackinginstruconP903andforairtransport
(IATA)inaccordancewithpackinginstruconP965.Theoriginalpackingcomplieswiththeserequirements.
2.4. DISPOSAL
Baeriesmarkedwiththerecyclingsymbolmustbereturnedtorecognizedrecyclingcenters.
Byarrangement,theycanalsobereturnedtothemanufacturer.Baeriesarenotallowedto
be disposed of in household or industrial waste.
Theterminalsofthelithiumbaeryareallwaysundervoltage.Therfore,neverplaceobjectsortoolson
thelithiumbaery.Avoidshortcircuits.Useinsulatedtools.Donotwearmetalobjectssuchaswatches,
bracelets,etc.onyourbody.Incaseofre,useclassDreexnguishers,foamorCO2reexnguishers.

2.5. IMPORTANT NOTES

Make absolutely sure that the LiFePO4 baery is not connected with reversed polarity. If the baery is
connectedincorrectly,theBMSelectronicswillbeirreparablydamagedandmustbereplacedwithanew
BMSboard.Thisisnotawarrantycase.

AerreceivingtheLiFePo4baery,checkwhetherthedevicehasbeendamagedexternallyinanyway,e.g.
bytransport.Ifthisisthecase,donotoperatethedeviceandcontacttheseller.


Donotdisassemblethebaerywithoutthesupplier’spermission.

Theworkingtemperatureshouldbebelow+60°C.
3.6. PROTECTION AGAINST SHORT CIRCUITS
Installation of a single battery
Thebaerymustbeprotectedbyafuse.

Upondelivery,thebaeriesarechargedtoapproximately20%.Itisrecommendedtofullychargethenew
baeriesrstbeforeusingtheminparallelconguraons.
3.8. MAINTENANCE
Forbaerycare,keepterminalsandsurfaceclean,ghtenterminalsrmlyandgreaselightly.Usecyclically
atleastonceayeartomaintainthecapacityofthebaeryandcalibratethechargestatus.
3.9. STORAGE
Disconnectalldevices.Thebaeryshouldbestoredinacoolwellvenlatedplace.Avoiddirectsunlightat
all.Itisrecommendedtochargethebaerytoapprox.80%ofitscapacityandtocheckthestateofcharge
onceayear.

 

4.1. CELL BALANCING AND ALARMS
Each12.8Vbaeryconsistsoffourcellsconnectedinseries.Theinternalcellbalancingsystemis:
a) measurethevoltageofeachcellandmoveAhfromcellswiththehighestvoltagetocellswithalower 
voltageunlthevoltagedierencebetweenthecellsislessthan50mV(acveequalizaon).
b) trigger an overvoltage (cell voltage > 3,75 V) or undervoltage (cell voltage < 2,80 V) alarm
whichisprocessedbytheBMS.
c) triggeranovertemperature(T>65°C)alarm,whichisprocessedbytheBMS.
d)triggeranundertemperature(T<-10°C)alarm,whichisprocessedbytheBMS.
4.2. CHARGE & DISCHARGE
TheLiFePo4baeryisfast-chargeable.Themeatgridconneconisenormouslyreduced.Longwaing
mesareeliminated.Duetothereisnomemoryeectwiththisbaery,thereisnoneedforbeingfully
chargedallme.Thelifespanwillberatherincreased,whenthebaeryisnotalwayschargedtostateof
100%.Forchargingthebaery,theadaponofprevioususeddeviceslikesolarchargecontrollersorsimilar
isnotneccessary.Thechargingvoltageisbetween13,8Vund14,6V.Aspecialchargerisnotneededsince
allIU-regulatedchargerscanbeused.
Donotexceedthemaximumpermiedchargingvoltage.
Usethebaeryonlyinthespeciedtemperaturerange.
Switchonthechargeronlyaerconnecngittothebaery.Aercharging,rstswitchothecharger
andthendisconnectthebaeryfromthecharger.
Ifthebaerybecomesveryhotduringchargingprocess,interruptthecharge,allowthebaerytocool
downbeforeconnuingthechargingprocess.
Thebaerymanagementsystem(BMS)automacallybalancesthecellswhennecessary.

WerecommendchargerswithaCCCVcharacteriscforopmumchargingofLiFePO4baeries.Therecommended
chargingvoltage(seetable)shouldbestrictlyobserved.Alowerchargingvoltagecanresultinthebaerynotbeing
fullychargedorthechargingmebeingsignicantlyextended.
Excessivechargingvoltagetriggerstheintegratedproteconofthebaeryandthechargingisstopped.Repeatedor
veryhighovervoltagemaycauseadefect.

Basicly, only baeriesof the same type andmodelshouldbeconnectedin parallel.Youshould neverconnecta
LiFePO4 baery directly with a lead-acid baery, as problems will occur due to the very dierent charging and
dischargingcharacteriscsofthebaeries.Forthecombinedusewithleadstarterbaerywerecommendasuitable
B2B charger (also called charge booster). This device allows controlled charging of the LiFePO4 baery by the
alternatorwithoutadirectconneconofleadandlithiumbaery.
THE CHARGING PROCESS STOPS BUT THE APP STILL DOES NOT SHOW 100%
Thebaerystopschargingassoonasoneofthecellshasreachedthemaximumstateofcharge.Whencharging
withaveryhighchargecurrent,itispossiblethatnotallcellshavereachedthisstateyet.Thebaeryautomacally
compensatesthesedierencesandallowschargingagainassoonasthecellshavebeenequalized.Especiallyfornew
baeriesoraerlongerstorage,werecommendchargingwithalowerchargingcurrenttousetheenrecapacity.
A CONNECTION VIA BLUETOOTH DOES NOT WORK.
Foraconnecontothebaery,yourequiretheLIONTRONapp.Adirectconneconviathebluetoothmenuofyour
smartphone is not possible.

As part of quality control, the baeries and the installed components are regularly checked before sale. Some
charginganddischargingcyclesarecompletelynormalandnoreasonforconcern.

Abaerycanonlybeconnectedtoonesmartphoneatame.Ifthebaerydoesnotappearinthelistofavailable
devices in the app, make sure that no other device is already connected to the baery. Also, make sure that
bluetoothisturnedon.Yourdevicemustsupportatleastbluetooth4.0.Insomecases,reinstallingtheapphelpsto
xproblems.
DIFFERENT STATES OF CHARGE WHEN SEVERAL BATTERIES ARE CONNECTED IN PARALLEL
Sinceeachbaeryinanetworkcalculatesthestateofchargeforitself,dierencesarenormal.Especiallywithnewly
connectedbaeries,itmaytakeseveralcyclesunlall baeriesof aparallelconneconhavebeenequalized.If
therearesllbigdierencesaerseveralworkingcycles,pleasecheckthecorrectwiringagain,asthiscouldbean
indicaonthatthebaeriesareunequallyloaded.
Ensureidencalcablecross-seconandcablelengthsareusedwhenconnecngthebaeriestoeachother.Loads
shouldbeconnectedtotheposivepoleoftherstbaeryandthenegavepoleofthelastbaeryinorderto
distributetheloadequallytoallbaeries.

Chargersforleadbaeriesmayonlybeusedifthecorrectchargingvoltageissetandnodesulfaonprogramis
used.Forecientcharging,werecommendchargerswithaspecialLiFePO4modeorprofessionaldeviceswhere
thevaluescanbeadjustedtoLiFePO4baeries,suchasVictronEnergybrandchargers,solarchargecontrollersand
combi devices.

LiontronGmbH&Co.KGprovidesconsumerswithavoluntarymanufacturer’swarrantyof5yearsinaddion
tothelegalwarranty.
The period for calculang the warranty period begins from the date of purchase by the rst customer
(date of invoice), but maximum 1 yearaer manufacture. The warranty period is not extended due to
the provision of services under this warranty, in parcular not in the case of replacement or repair.
Thewarrantyperioddoesnotstartnewinthesecases.
This warranty is valid for all Liontron Lithium baeries with a date of purchase on or aer 01.01.2019.
Excludedareaccessories,consumablesandotheraachmentstotheproduct.
TheterritorialscopeoftheguaranteeproteconisEurope-wide.

Thecondionforawarrantyclaimisadefectoramalfunconwhichnolongerallowsordisproporonately
restrictstheintendeduseofthebaery.
Claimsunderthiswarrantymustbemadebynofyingthemanufacturerinwringimmediately,butnolater
than14daysaerthedefectorabnormalityoccurs.Intheeventofawarrantyclaim,pleasecontactusas

Toprocessawarrantyclaim,itmustincludeacopyoftheproofofpurchaseandadescriponofthesupposed
defects.Withoutacopyoftheinvoice,theguarantormayrefusetoprovidewarrantyservice.Inorderto
examinethewarrantyclaim,theguarantormustbeallowedtoexaminethegoodsbysendingthegoodsin.
Caremustbetakentoavoiddamagetothegoodsintransitbysecurepackaging.

Thewarrantyservicesarelimitedineachcasetoamaximumofthevalueoftheoriginalpurchaseprice
paid.TheliabilityofLiontronGmbH&Co.KGunderthiswarrantyislimitedtothereplacement,repairor
reimbursementofcostsoftheproduct.Thechoiceofreplacement,repair,orreimbursementofcostsisthe
exclusiveresponsibilityofthewarrantor.Ifthedefecveproductisnolongerinthedeliveryprogram,the
guarantorreservestherighttoreplaceitwithatechnicallyequivalentproductfromthecurrentrange.
AlldefecvebaeriesorcomponentsreplacedunderwarrantybecomethepropertyofLiontronGmbH&
Co. KG.
Furtherclaims,especiallyforcompensaonofdirectorindirectdamagescausedbythedefectofthedevice,
thecostsincurredbytheremovalandinstallaonorlostprot,areexcluded,unlessliabilityismandatory
bylaw.

d)improper,abusiveorcarelesshandlingoruse,
e)Faultyinstallaonorstartup,
f) Malfunconofotherconnecteddevices,
g)Disregardofsafetyprecauons,
h)ownmodicaons,programmingorrepairs,
i) usenotinaccordancewiththeoperanginstruconsorotherwiseimproperhandlingofthegoods
