VOICE in-wall loudspeaker installation
RETROFIT INSTALLATION - 16" ON-CENTER STUDS
VOICE loudspeakers are engineered to bolt directly to 2"x4" stud bracing. This ensures the rigidity
required for correct acoustic sound reproduction. The following are the steps recommended to install
VOICE loudspeakers correctly.
STEP 1: Locate studs:
USING A STUD FINDER, LOCATE AND MARK STUDS. NOTE: FOR THIS INSTALLATION
GUIDE, STUDS SHOULD MEASURE 16" ON-CENTER. IF STUDS ARE WIDER THAN 16" OC, REFER
TO
RETROFIT NON-STANDARD SPACING GUIDE
.
STEP 2: Cut sheetrock to accommodate speaker.
THE SHEETROCK SHOULD BE CUT ACCORDING TO VOICE LOUDSPEAKER CUTOUT
DIMENSIONS (42" HIGH; 14.5" WIDE - THIS INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE
WWW.LISTEN-SPEAKERS.COM). THE TOP OF THE SQUARE CUTOUT SHOULD BE 12 1/4" ABOVE
EAR LEVEL IN THE LISTENING POSITION. THIS PLACEMENT WILL ENSURE THAT THE VOICE POINT
SOURCE DRIVER IS IN THE IDEAL POSITION; SLIGHTLY BELOW EAR LEVEL. NOTE: TAKING THE
TIME TO ENSURE CORRECT SPEAKER PLACEMENT WILL GREATLY ENHANCE THE LISTENING
EXPERIENCE.
STEP 3: Frame the sides of cutout to frame the speaker.
FIRST, DETERMINE WHERE THE EXISTING STUDS ARE. IN MOST CASES, YOU WILL ONLY
NEED TO FRAME ONE SIDE OF THE CUTOUT, AS THERE WILL BE A STUD CLOSE TO ONE SIDE OR
THE OTHER.
NEXT, CUT THE WOOD REQUIRED TO FRAME THE SIDES OF THE SPEAKER. THIS
SHOULD BE A 2x4 PIECE OF WOOD CUT TO 45" IN LENGTH.
STEP 4: Fasten side frame wood to the back side of drywall.
INSERT WOOD THROUGH THE CUTOUT INTO THE WALL. USING DRYWALL SCREWS,
FASTEN THE 45" LENGTH OF WOOD TO THE BACK SIDE OF THE SHEETROCK. NOTE: THE STUD
SHOULD RUN ALONG THE SIDE OF THE CUTOUT, FLUSH WITH THE SIDE TO ENSURE A PROPER
FIT.
STEP 5: Repeat for opposite side as necessary.
REPEAT STEP 4 FOR THE OPPOSITE SIDE FRAME IF NECESSARY. IF THERE IS AN
EXISTING STUD ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE, CONTINUE TO STEP 6.
STEP 6: Cut two (2) pieces of 2x4 wood to 14.5" length for supporting cross braces:
CUT TWO (2) PIECES OF 2x4 STANDARD FRAMING WOOD TO 14.5" TO FRAME IN THE
SPEAKER. THESE PIECES OF WOOD WILL SERVE AS SUPPORTING CROSS BRACES THAT BEAR
THE WEIGHT OF THE SPEAKER AND FRAME THE WALL AROUND THE SPEAKER FOR AN
ACOUSTICALLY CORRECT INSTALLATION.
STEP 7: Install supporting cross braces:
INTALL CROSS BRACES BETWEEN 16" ON CENTER STUDS. THIS STEP WILL SERVE TO
FRAME THE LOUDSPEAKER. THE UPPER CROSS BRACE SHOULD BE PLACED SO THAT THE
BOTTOM IS 12 1/4" ABOVE THE IDEAL LISTENING POSITION - OR FLUSH WITH THE TOP OF THE
CUTOUT IN STEP 2.
THE LOWER CROSS BRACE SHOULD BE PLACED SO THAT THE TOP IS 42" BELOW THE
UPPER CROSS BRACE, OR FLUSH WITH THE BOTTOM OF THE CUTOUT IN STEP 2.
STEP 8: Install foam mounting tape:
SUPPLIED WITH EVERY VOICE SPEAKER IS A SMALL SECTION OF FOAM DAMPING TAPE.
THIS FOAM IS DESIGNED TO CREATE AN ACOUSTIC BARRIER BETWEEN THE LOUDSPEAKER AND
THE LOWER CROSS BRACE. PEEL OFF ADHESIVE BACKING AND ADHERE THE FOAM DIRECTLY TO
THE STUD. NOTE: NEWER MODELS OF VOICE LOUDSPEAKERS HAVE THIS FOAM INTEGRATED
INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE SPEAKER. IF YOU DID NOT SEE THE LOOSE FOAM STRIP IN THE BOX,
CHECK THE BOTTOM OF THE SPEAKER.
STEP 9: Connect speaker cable to top terminal:
THE WIRE TERMINALS ARE CONVENIENTLY LOCATED ON THE TOP OF THE SPEAKER
ENCLOSURE. CONNECT THE RED TERMINAL TO THE POSITIVE WIRE. CONNECT THE BLACK
TERMINAL TO THE NEGATIVE WIRE.
STEP 10: Place speaker inside of stud cavity:
CAREFULLY LIFT THE SPEAKER INTO THE FRAMED STUD CAVITY. THE SPEAKER SHOULD
SIT SOFTLY AND SECURLELY ON THE DAMPING FOAM.
STEP 11: Screw speaker into wall:
ON THE OUTSIDE EDGES OF THE STEEL SPEAKER FRAME ARE (40) MOUNTING HOLES.
THESE HOLES ACCOMODATE STADARD #8 WOOD OR DRYWALL SCREWS. SCREW SPEAKER
DIRECTLY INTO WOOD STUDS. NOTES: 1) AS REGARDS ACOUSTICS, WE RECOMMEND USING ALL
40 MOUNTING SCREWS. HOWEVER, WE UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS A TIMELY PROCESS TO INSTALL
ALL SCREWS. STARTING WITH THE 4 CORNERS, INSTALL EVERY OTHER SCREW WHEN TIME
DOES NOT PERMIT INSTALLATION WITH ALL 40 SCREWS. 2) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOUNT
VOICE LOUDSPEAKERS USING DRYWALL ANCHORS. THE RESULTING MOUNTING WILL NOT BE
ADEQUATELY RIGID. BOTH INSTALLATION INTEGRITY AND ACOUSTICAL CLARITY WILL BE
SIGNIFICANTLY DIMINISHED.
STEP 12: There is no step 12, YOU'RE FINISHED!
ENSURE YOUR ROOM IS ADDRESSED ACOUSTICALLY AND SIT BACK AND ENJOY YOUR
MUSIC AND MOVIES. WE HOPE YOU FIND THE EXPERIENCE TO BE BETTER THAN MOST YOU
HAVE BEEN ACUSTOMED TO.
