T30 and T36 Tractor Arch Owner’s Manual
You will find this implement handy if you have a tractor and any reason to move logs. You will be
able to move logs your tractor could only dream about before. The ground will remain virtually
undisturbed and the logs will stay clean for sawing. The arch is a steel structure with minimal
working parts so it is easy to maintain. It is equipped to be pulled from a drawbar hitch with a 2” ball.
The logs are lifted into the arch with a hand winch.
Read all instructions including the winch manufacturer’s instruction manual before using.
Remain constantly aware that safe operating is your responsibility.
High forces are created when using a winch, creating potential safety hazards. It should be
operated and maintained in accordance with instructions. Never allow children or anyone
not familiar with the operation of a winch to use it. A winch accident could result in personal
injury.
Tractor arches are designed to move logs, poles, and beams only.
Do NOT use the arch to move logs on any public road.
Do NOT lift the arch when loaded.
Should the load begin to fall out of control when operating, do NOT attempt to stop the
spinning winch handle with your hands or any part of your body.
Check winch for proper operation on each use. Do NOT use if damaged. Seek immediate
repairs.
T36 with Fetching arch as tag axle.
While the tractor arches are great for pulling, they
have limited mobility and safety limits in the forest
environment. If there is any serious sloping terrain
in your operation, please think seriously of keeping
to the road and use a winch line to bring logs to the
tractor. If you are using your arch primarily on
sloped terrain, you may consider adding electric
brakes.

When unpacking arch parts from the pallet, please have two people
working, as parts are heavy and may be cumbersome.
Assembly
•Remove all parts from pallet.
•Place drop tongue section into the center truss. Use a 5/8” - 11 x 3 1/2” hex head bolt and a 5/8” - 11
locking nut, bolt into place tightly, as this is only done once (pic A).
•Place the center truss and drop tongue into the arch frame and bolt with a 5/8” - 11 x 3 1/2” hex head bolt
and a 5/8” - 11locking nut. Tighten with a 15/16” wrench.
•Use 1/2” - 13 X 2” bolts, 1/2” washers and 1/2” - 13 lock nuts to secure the truss to both the arch frame and
drop tongue (pic. B). Tighten with 3/4” wrench.
•Thread winch handle onto input shaft of winch.
•Load 5/16” x 3/4” bolt with 5/16” fender washer and 5/16” washer. Use this to attach winch handle to the
winch (pic C)*. Tighten with a 1/2” wrench.
•Wind out enough cable to reach the back of the arch.
•Release the thumb screw on the snatch block (pulley) and mount it to the oblong ring. Use the shackle to
connect the ring and snatch block through the center hole in the snatch block plate below the arch (pic D).
Install the winch line through the snatch block, make sure the bell is on the same side as the nubbin. Close
snatch block and replace the thumb screw.

Use
To pick up a log, you can back over the log or use the winch cable to pull the log into the arch.
The arch is designed to pick up the weight of the log instead of the tractor. The amount of the log
that is in the arch determines how much of the log weight will be picked up. If the log is 16’ (T30)
or 18’ (T36) or less the entire log can be suspended.
Straddle the arch over the midpoint of the log. Now you are ready to choke the log and winch it
into the arch.
Lifting logs 3500 to 4000 (T30) or 6000 (T36) lbs
The doubler bell (pic E) must be used for logs in this weight range. The doubling option is when
you hook the winch line into the doubler bell instead of the bell attached to the end of the winch
line, this allows the log to act as a second pulley (pic F). Then hook the doubler to one of the four
chains welded to the arch. Using the doubling option allows you to get the needed 6000 lbs of lift
from the winch. Determining which chain fall to use will depend on the size and shape of your
log. When using the doubler, the snatch block will move to one side and the bell to the other,
allowing the log to rise much higher into the arch.
Lifting smaller logs
On smaller and lighter logs, the winch line is hooked to itself and the winch line picks up the log
(pic G).
Carrying a fully suspended log
After the winching operation be sure to secure the load. Use the provided strap to hold the log at
the ring on the reach of the arch just behind the drop tongue.
Pro tip: On longer logs(over 16’, 18’), there will be a slight drag. This tail drag is often a slight
advantage, as the log will trail straight behind the arch. It might also be used as resistance when
on a gentle slope.

Adjusting the tongue weight
The arches are designed to have a neutral tongue weight. However, depending on your load it
may be necessary to change the tongue weight.
Logs loaded with more weight extending out from the arch can cause negative tongue weight.
This can cause the tractor to become unstable. Lower the log giving yourself some extra cable to
work with. Detach the shackle and change the attachment of the snatch block to the front hole in
the snatch block plate on the front of the arch (pic H).
Attaching the snatch block to the back hole is recommended when there is too much tongue
weight.

Winch Operating Instructions
A slight modification was made to your winch to allow the operator to unwind the cable without
a load. To release the cable from the winch turn the handle in counterclockwise direction. Now
by pulling gently on the winch cable you can free spool until the desired amount of cable has
been released. Do NOT attempt to stop the spinning winch handle with your hands or any part
of your body. If too much tension is placed on the cable the brake will be engaged and stop the
release of cable.
After choking the log, wind the handle in clockwise direction to lift the load. The braking winch
is designed to keep the load in position when the handle is released, but for extra security it is
recommended that the handle be turned clockwise until at least two clicks are heard. This will
add extra tightness to the brake mechanism. Always make sure that the winch is holding the
load before releasing the winch handle.
To lower the load, wind the winch handle counterclockwise until the load is on the ground and
the cable is slack enough to work with.

Maintenance
•Check the coupler, winch and snatch blocks daily.
•Inspect winch cable on every use. Replace cable at the first signs of
kinks, broken wires, deformation or any other damage.
•Keep the winch line unsnarled.
•Pack the hubs with grease annually or after heavy use.
•Keep tires at recommended pressure.
•See Dutton-Laison owner’s manual for proper winch maintenance.
Specific Applications (Items can be locally sourced.)
The tractor arches have provisions for mounting a power winch in the front or rear receivers.
Use the front receiver to pull the arch with its load out of an area which is difficult to reach with
your tractor. Use the rear receiver mount to pull logs to the arch and tractor.
If you will be using your arch primarily on sloped terrain, you may consider adding electric
brakes.
The rear receiver mount can be fitted with a light bar to be used when moving the arch to the
job site.
Additional Information for Using the Winch
•Break in the new winch cable.
•Take a little extra time to pull out cable slack before winching.
•NEVER pull all the cable out of your winch (always leave at least three wraps of cable on the
spool).
•Brace yourself when winching in a log. Take out the slack then grab onto the arch with your
free hand.
•Always lower the load in control.
•Should the load begin to fall out of control when operating, do NOT attempt to stop the
spinning winch handle with your hands or any part of your body.
•Operate with hand power only. This winch must not be operated with a motor of any kind. If
the winch cannot be cranked easily with one hand, it is probably overloaded.
