INTRODUCTION
The GlobalMap 1000 isa high quality, wide screen mapping unitwith
performancethatissecondtononeinitsclass. Using menufeaturesand
"soft-key"operation,the GlobalMap1000isalsooneoftheeasiest-to-use
products
that Lowrance haseverbuilt.Itsets newstandardsinmapping
versatility
and
performance bycombiningabuilt-inreference map(back-
groundmap)
withthe
ability
toreadmappingcartridges(requiresoptional
MapLinkTM cartridgereader.)The
displayandkeyboardarealsolighted
for
nightoperation.
The GlobalMap 1000's built-in background map includes virtually the
whole
world,however,over7o%
ofthe
map's
detailisin
the
48-contiguous
states,HawaD, andsouthernCanada.If
youinstallthe MapLink cartridge
reader,the
GlobalMap1000can displayhighlydetailedchartsavailableon
C-Map cartridges, covering mostcoastalareasaround theworld.Inthe
future,
Lowrancewill alsohavecartridges
availablethatcover
many
inland
areas.
MOUNTING -BracketMount
Installthe
GlobalMap 1000 in any
convenient location, provided thereis
clearance behindtheunitwhenitistiltedforthebest
viewingangle. Holes
inthebracket baseallowwoodscreworthrough-bolt mounting.You
may
needtoplace a
piece
ofplywoodonthebackofthinfiberglass panels to
secure
the
mountinghardware.Makecertainthereis enough
roombehind
theunittoattachthepower and MapLinkcables (ifused).
Thesmallest holethatwillpass
the
powerplugisone inch.Afterthehole
isdrilled, pass theMapLink connector upthrough theholefirst (ifused),
then
passthepowercable
downthrough it.

hardware ifthedash is1/2"thickorless. Determiningthedashthickness
canbedifficult, however, ifyouremoveagauge fromthedash,youcan
easily
measurethethickness.Trythisinanareathat'sclosetothelocation
thatyou wishtoinstalltheunit sincethethickness can
varysignificantly
insomeboats.Makecertainthereisclearance behindthedashfortheunit
and thereisenough roomtotightentheboltsonboth sidesoftheunit.

cutthehole
according
to
the
drawing
shownabove.Measure carefully before
cuttingl

dash,
place
the
gasketsuppliedwiththe
GlobalMap 1000aroundthe
unitand
place
theunitinthehole.
Suppliedwiththe GlobalMap 1000are rubber pads, bolts, washers,and
camclampstoattachittothedash. Peeltheadhesive
backing offthe
rubber
pads
andplaceoneoneachside oftheunitin the
locationwhere
thecam
clamp
willtouch thebackside ofthedash.Usingthe
hardware
supplied
withthe
unit,
attachtheunittothedash.Lookingatthebackofthe
unit,makecertainthatthecam
clamp
ontheleftsideoftheunitispointing
downandthecamclamponthe

sideoftheunitis
pointingupbefore
youstart tightening thebolts.

PRESET

orroutes.
Topreset
theunit,press the MENU key twotimes.Thescreen shown
aboveappears. Nowpress thekeynexttothe°PresetUnitto Factory
Settings" label.Amessageappears,warning you
thatthiswillpreset the
unit.Pressthe ENT to preset the unitortheCLRkey to exit without
presetting. If you
press
theENT
key,themenu screen disappearsandthe
GlobalMap 1000 returnstothe mappingscreen. Allunitswillbereturned
totheir
factorysettings.
SIMULATOR
The GlobalMap 1000 hasasimulator feature that shows yourpresent
position travelling a preset course fromMiami, Florida. All navigation
features
oftheunit
operate, also.Arecurringmessage appears alerting
youthatthesimulator mode is enabled. DON'TUSETHISUNIT FOR
NAVIGATION WHEN THESIMULATORISOPERATING!
POWER CONNECTIONS
The
GlobalMap 1000worksfromatwelve-volt batterysystem.
Forthebest
results,attach thepowercable directlytothe battery.Youcanattachthe
power cableto an accessory or power buss, however
you mayhave
problemswithelectrical interference.
Therefore,it'ssaferto go
aheadand
attachthe
powercabledirectlyto
the
battery.Ifthecableistooshort,splice

gauge
wireontoit. The
powercablehas
four
wires; red,black,green,
andwhite.Red isthe positive lead, black is negative orground. Make
certaintoattachthein-linefuseholdertotheredleadasclosetothe
power
sourceaspossible.For
example,if you
havetoextend the
power
cableto
the
battery
or
power
buss,
attachoneendofthefuseholder
directly
tothe
battery
orpower buss.Thiswillprotectboth the
unitandthe
power
cable
in theeventofashort. TheGlobalMap1000 uses
a
3-amp
fuse.

used, thentheLowranceLGC-1 GPSreceivercanbeused.
Thewiring connectionsfortheNMEA 0183version 1.5aredifferentthan
theonesused
fortheNMEA0183version2.0.If
you
areusingversion1.5,
then
use
the
greenandblackwiresonthe
GlobalMap'spowercable. If you
areusing
version 2.0, thenyou'llbeusingthefourshielded wires onthe
GlobalMap's power
cable.
Ifyou'reusing the LowranceLGC-1 GPSmodule, simplyplug itscable
directly
intothein-lineconnector ontheGlobalMap's power
cable. This
sends
navigation data
directly
tothe
GlobalMap without usinganyNMEA
input.You
can,if desired,useeitherNMEAoutput
todriveanotherdevice
whileusing the LGC-1 as an input. The GlobalMap 1000 also hasthe
provisionfora
DGPSbeaconreceiverforusewiththeLGC-1GPSmodule.

For

Your unit showsa longitude
position that is .010 degrees
lessthantheone onthechart.
Using the Position Correction
Factor
(PCF)Offset
feature,you
maketheunitreadthesameasthe
chart.
Ifyou move, theunit will continuously add thechangeto all position
displays.Thismakes itmore closelymatchthedatumusedby
thechart.
Forthisreason,you
shouldbecarefulwhen
entering
thePCFoffset.This
offsetissavedinmemory. Itdoesn't change whentheunitisturned off.
However, aPreset does erasethePCFfactor.
TosetthePCF
factor,
first
presstheMENUkey
twotimes, thenpress the
keynexttothe"Datum Translations label. Finally, press
thekeynextto
the"PCF" labelatthebottom ofthedisplay. Thescreen shown above
appears.
Nowenterthecorrection
foryour
location.
Remember,thisisthedifference
between thelocation shown on the presentpositiondisplay and the
position shown on the chart. In thisexample, we haveentered 0 de-
grees,.012 minutes northlatitude and 0 degrees, .068 minutes east
longitude asthePCFoffset.Thatisthedifference between thepresent
position shownontheunitand ourpositionshown bythechart. Inother
words,
ourposition shown ontheunitis0.012 minutessouthand 0.068
minutes

Afteryou'veentered thedesired offset, press thekeynexttothe"PCF

The displaydatum box shows the datum currently displayed on the
mapping
screenbythe
GlobalMap1000. Ifthe
display
datumisdifferent
fromthesourcedatum, the
GlobalMap1000"translates"thesourcedatum
tothedisplayedone. Thisletsyoudisplaya
map usingany
datumonthe
listonthe
right
sideofthescreen.
To
change eitherthesourceor displayeddatum,
firstpress the
keyonthe
right sideofthescreen next tothedesired box
thatyouwishtochange.
Thenpress theupordown arrow keystomove highlight
thedatum
you
wishtouse.For
example, tochange thesource datum
fromWOS84to
WGS
72,
simplypressthekey
nexttothe"SourceDatum"label,then
press
thedownarrow
keyuntil "WGS72"ishighlighted.When thesource box

TheGlobalMap 1000sendsdata tootherelectronic navigation devices
throughthewhitewireandreceivesNMEAdata
throughthe green
wire,
Ifthewhiteandgreenwires are notused, tapetheirendssothatthey
cannot short.
To connecta device totheGlobalMap 1000's NMEA 0183version 1.5
input,
attach atwistedpaircable
from
thedevice's NMEA output tothe
green and blackwires onthe GlobalMap Il'spowercable. Solder the
ground conductor of the twisted pairto the black wire on the power
cable.
Toconnectadevice totheGlobalMap 1000's NMEA 0183 version 1.5
output,
attach atwisted pair cablefromthedevice's NMEA inputtothe
whiteand blackwires onthe GlobalMap Il's powercable. Solderthe
ground conductorof thetwisted pairto theblackwire on the power
cable.Seetheotherinstrument's manualformore wiring instructions.
Thedefault forboth thesource and
displaydatums isWGS84.
PCF(Position CorrectionFactor)
Anothermethod usedtoreducetheerrorfactor between datum
iscalled
PCF,orPosition Correction Factor.Thisunitgives youthecapability to
moveor"offset"the
position
shownonthe
displaytomatchtheoneonthe
chart.TheunitwilladdthisoffsetorPCFtoallpositiondisplays
atalltimes.
Remember, theposition erroron.any radionavigation system is very
dynamic
andthePCFoffsetshouldneverbeused inan
attempttocancel
theerror.Ingeneral terms this feature should onlybeused ifyour map

Inorder forthe
GlobalMap 1000tosend datatoanother device, connect
theotherdevice's NMEA 0183 version 2.0 inputto the GlobaiMap's
NMEA 0183version2.0'soutput(GlobalMap sends
data)byattaching
atwistedpair cablefromtheotherdevice's NMEA inputtotheshielded
whiteandgreen wiresonthe
GlobalMap il's power
cable.
Toaddthe
positionshownatthe top
ofManOverboardInformationmenu
to the waypoint table,simply pressthe key nextto the"Covert Man
Overboard to Waypoint" label. The GlobalMap 1000 will assign that
positiontothefirstavailable waypoint numberinthe waypoint table.This
waypointcan be edited the same as any otherwaypoint on the list,
includingthe
name,
symbol,and position.
Remember, repeated pressing of the Man Overboard key does not
repeatedlysave yourpresentposition!Theunit only
savesthe
position
the
first time the Man Overboard key is pressed. To save a new Man
Overboard position,youmustfirstreset ManOverboard byDressing the
key nextto the "ResetMan Overboard" labelon theMan Overboard
Information menu.
Youcannavigatetoa
waypoint usingthe
Waypoint Recallfeatureatany
time,howeverthis stops
the
GlobalMap1000fromnavigatingtotheMan
Overboard position.
Remember,saving thevictimisthe
primarygoal.Try
alloptionstorescue
the
personimmediatelyaftertheaccidenthappens.Training
andeduca-
tionarealsogood accidentpreventative.TheCoastGuardhasexcellent
safety courses. Instruct all members on board your boat on safety
procedures beforeleavingthedock.Makecertainallonboard knowwhat
todobefore
anyemergencyoccurs.
DATUMS
TheGPSnavigationsystem reliesoncomplex mathematical calculations
todetermine yourpositionbasedonsatellite dataand otherfactors. One
factoristheEarth'sshape.SincetheEarthisnotatruesphere,variations
inthecalculationshavetobemadetoaccommodatedeviations. Tomake
mattersmorecomplex, not everyone usesthesame datatodetermine
whatthedeviations are.Thesizeandshapeofthe
ellipsoidsthatareused
toapproximate theearth'ssurface are improved often. Thiscanlead to
errorsif yournavigation device usesone ellipsoid,while
your
chartuses
adifferent one.Thetermusedforthese
