General Safety Information
The following instructions are intended to serve as a guideline for the use of the Macurco RD-VRF Refrigerant Leak
Detector. This manual will refer to this device as RD-VRF unless content is specific to a model. This manual is not to
be considered all-inclusive, nor is it intended to replace the policy and procedures for your facility. If you have any
doubts about the applicability of the equipment to your situation, consult an industrial hygienist or call Technical
Support at 1-844-325-3050.
1.1 General Description
The Macurco RD-VRF Refrigerant Gas Detector is designed to provide continuous refrigerant monitoring in VRF
(Variable Refrigerant Flow) applications. A leak in refrigerant gas could develop an oxygen depleting environment
that may lead to asphyxiation. The RD-VRF Refrigerant Gas Detector comes standard with 2 alarm levels providing
advanced warning via low detection alarming and notification to activate two onboard relays that can be used to
control valves to isolate or shutdown refrigerant supply lines, engage exhaust fans, provide notification alarms, and
communicate to a Building Management System.
1.2 List of warnings and Cautions

This equipment may not function effectively below 14°F or above 122°F (-10°C or
above 50°C). Using the detector outside of this temperature range may adversely

airborne gas. Misuse may produce an inaccurate reading, which means that higher
levels of the gas being monitored may be present and could result in overexposure

High voltage terminals (120/240 VAC) are located within this detector, presenting a
hazard to service technicians. Only qualified technicians should open the detector case
and service the internal circuits. Ensure power is de-energized from the detector relays
prior to servicing the unit. Failure to do so may result in electrical shock.
Do not disassemble the unit or attempt to repair or modify any component of this
instrument. This instrument contains no user serviceable parts, and substitution of
components may impair product performance.
Using a certified gas with a concentration other than the one listed for this detector
when conducting a calibration verification test (bump test) will produce inaccurate
readings. This means that higher levels of the gas being monitored may be present and
could result in overexposure. For proper use, see supervisor or User manual, or

The following steps must be performed when conducting a calibration verification test
(bump test) to ensure proper performance of the monitor. Failure to do so may
adversely affect product performance.
•When performing a calibration verification test (bump test) only use certified
calibration gas at the required concentration level.
•Do not test with expired calibration gas.
•Do not cover or obstruct display or visual alarm cover.
•Ensure sensor inlets are unobstructed and are free of debris

2Use Instructions and Limitations

2.1 Use For
The RD-VRF provides refrigerant leak detection with local and remote monitoring for commercial or residential
applications. Typical applications include hotel rooms, senior care, dorms, hospitals, commercial offices, classrooms,
and other occupied spaces taking advantage of the cost-saving benefits of VRF technologies for heating and cooling.
The RD-VRF has a long-life stable NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) sensor (expected lifespan of >8 years). The VRF is a
low-level meter with alarm set points at 1000ppm and 2000ppm of refrigerant gas. The RD-VRF can detect several
refrigerants including R-32, R134A, R404A, R-407C, R-410A, R-1234YF, and R-1234ZE. The RD-VRF is factory
calibrated and tested for proper operation.
Refrigerants are colorless and nearly odorless liquids or gases divided into two groups according to toxicity and
flammability. See ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 34-2007 - Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants for details.
Always review the refrigerant MSDS and safety classifications before use. RD-VRF can be used stand alone or
communicate to a Building Management System (BMS) via RS-485.

2.2 Do NOT use for
The RD-VRF is not intended for use in hazardous locations or industrial applications such as refineries, chemical
plants, etc. Do not mount the VRF where the normal ambient temperature is below -14°F or exceeds 122°F (-10°C or

above 50°C). The RD-VRF mounts in a standard 2 gang PVC electrical box supplied by the contractor. Do not install
the RD-VRF inside another box unless it has good air flow through it.
WARNING
This equipment may not function effectively below -4°F or above 140°F (-20°C or above
60°C). Using the detector outside of this temperature range may adversely affect
product performance.

3Installation and Operating Instructions
The following instructions are intended to serve as a guideline for the use of the Macurco RD-VRF Refrigerant Leak
Detector. It is not to be considered all-inclusive, nor is it intended to replace the policy and procedures for each
facility
WARNING

3.1 Location
An RD-VRF is normally mounted low in the room on a wall or column one foot above the floor in a central area
where air movement is generally good. Use the same spacing as for smoke detectors, 30-foot centers, 900 square
feet per detector (84 sq. meters). The coverage depends on air movement within the room or facility. Extra
detectors may be needed near any areas where people work, or sleep, or where the air is stagnant. The RD-VRF
mounts on a 2 gang PVC electrical box supplied by the contractor. Do not install the RD-VRF inside another box
unless it has good air flow through it. Mount the unit near the discharge of the fan coil. Do NOT mount the RD-VRF
where the normal ambient temperature is below 14°F or exceeds 122°F (below -10°C or above 50°C).

High voltage terminals (120/240 VAC) are located within this detector, presenting a
hazard to service technicians. Only qualified technicians should open the detector case
and service the internal circuits. Ensure power is de-energized from the detector relays
prior to servicing the unit. Failure to do so may result in electrical shock.
3.2 Installation

1. Turn off all power to product and all I/O circuitry (alarms, control I/O etc.) before starting the
installation, removal, wiring, maintenance, or inspection of the product.
2. Installers must comply with all national and local codes regarding the installation and wiring of line
voltage devices.
3. The RD-VRF mounts on a 2 gang PVC electrical box supplied by the contractor. Do not mount the RD-VRF
inside another box, unless it has good air flow through it.
4. Be careful not to install the gas detector close to air intakes or fans causing strong air currents.
5. Be sure the detectors are attached to a firm base to prevent vibration that can damage them, producing
unreliable results.
6. Install the detectors in a convenient location for future maintenance and calibration requirements
7. Detector must be fully inserted and secured to the PVC junction box ensuring protection from
dust and construction debris (See figure 3-3 & 3-4).
8. Connect the RD-VRF to Class 2 power supply only. It is suggested to use a separate transformer for powering
the unit or units because of possible interferences from other devices on the same power supply.
9. Connect the RD-VRF to the control cables via the terminals. When making connections, make sure the
power is off.
10. There are three terminals for Power:
a. 12-24V: +12-24 is terminal 1 and GND is terminal 3 Refer to: Figure 3-6
b. 90-240V: terminal 1 and terminal 3 no polarity preference Refer to: Figure 3-7
11. There are three terminals for each dry alarm relay contact. The alarm relay can switch up to 1.0 A 30V. The
alarm relays activate if gas reaches or exceeds the alarm settings. Refer to: Figure 3-6 or Figure 3-7
12. The alarm relays can be configured to normally open (default) (N.O.) or normally closed (N.C.) and will
activate if the gas concentration exceeds the alarm set point.
a. Relay 1 Setpoint: 1000ppm
b. Relay 2 Setpoint: 2000ppm
It will deactivate once the gas concentration drops below the alarm set point.

13. Cover should be fully inserted and aligned to the sensor head using the guiding slots on the face of the
sensor plastic housing (see figures 3-3, 3-4, 3-5)
14. Perform a magnet function test once installed.
15. Place magnet (provided) against the round port opposite to the LED indication actuates the
function test

3.3 Terminal Connections
3.3.1 RD-VRF-X-24 Low Voltage Models
Except for the safety ground, all field wiring is completed via modular connectors (provided). After wiring, simply
plug the modular connectors into the matching connectors on the back side of the detector.
3.3.1.1 Power Connection
Connect the RD-VRF to Class 2 power supply only. It is suggested to use a separate transformer for powering the unit
or units because of possible interferences from other devices on the same power supply. Connect the RD-VRF to the
control cables with terminal plugs. When making connections, make sure the power is off. There are two terminals
for Power: 12 to 24 VAC or 12 to 32 VDC. The connection can accommodate a wire size 12 to 22AWG. Refer to
Figure 3-4.
3.3.1.2 Relay Connections
Both relay terminals have normally open, common, and normally closed (NO, COM and NC) connections and can
accommodate a wire size 14 to 22 AWG. To install the wiring for the relays, strip the insulation of each wire back
approximately 1/4 in. (6.5 mm), insert the bare wire into the terminal and tighten the screw clamp. Ensure that the
wire cannot easily be pulled from the connector.
3.3.1.3 Modbus Connection
When using the Modbus connection, it should be done using a RS-485, 4 conductor, 22-24AWG, shielded twisted
pair cable.
Note: Running the Modbus cable adjacent to or in the same conduit with high voltage wires is not recommended as
there may be interference from the high voltages.

•Nominal capacity between the wires <50pF/m, nominal impedance 120 Ω. Use cable BELDEN cable
9842 or similar (data transmission cable in EIA RS485).
•The total length of the line should not exceed 3280 ft.
•Detectors are to be wired in daisy chain mode. We recommend avoiding star or tree mode
connection as interference immunity would be reduced.
•Make sure that each multi-polar wire includes just one RS485.
•Make sure that a 120 Ωend line resistor is placed at the beginning and at the end (on the last
detector) of the bus line.
•For power supply connection, it is recommended to use a 2-wire cable with suitable section
according to the distance and number of detectors.
•Once the installation is completed, verify that each detector reaches at least 12 Vdc.
3.3.2 RD-VRF-X-120 Line Voltage Models
Except for the safety ground, all field wiring is completed via modular connectors (provided).
3.3.2.1 Power Connection
Mains connections should be done in accordance with National and Local Electrical Codes. Only qualified personnel
should connect Mains power to any device. Macurco recommends a minimum wire size of AWG18, and the wire
insulator must be rated for 140°F (60°C) service. The modular connector will accept wire from 12 to 22 AWG. The
safety ground wire should be secured to the ground screw of the metal electrical box. Tighten the screw and make
sure the wire is snug. Ensure that the wire cannot be pulled out from under the screw. The Line (L) and Neutral (N)
wires should be stripped 1/4 in. (6.5 mm), insert the wire into the ”1” and “3” wire positions on the power terminal
and tighten the screw clamp. Ensure that the wire cannot be easily pulled from the connector. Refer to Figure 3-7.
3.3.2.2 Relay Connections

4Operations
4.1 Power up
When the detector is powered on, the status LED starts blinking green during warm-up time. After two minutes, the
LED goes to a steady green during normal status. Once the warm-up phase is over, the detector can work correctly,
although the optimal performance will be achieved after two hours.
4.2 LED Indicator
Clean Air –During normal operation, the Power indicator will be green and steady.
Warmup –During warmup, the Power indicator will be green and blinking.
Alarm –During an alarm condition, the Power indicator will be red and blinking.
Fault/Trouble –During a fault condition, the Power indicator will flash between amber and red.
4.3 Buzzer Silence
To silence the buzzer, the special magnet must be brought near the point on the left of the gas sensor, in
correspondence with the hall effect sensor. If the alarm condition persists, after 1 minute the buzzer is reactivated.
Utilizing the onboard dipswitch, you can disable the buzzer permanently with position 1 in the Off position and you
can enable the buzzer reactivation alarm from silence from 1 minute (default) to 5 minutes by adjusting position 4 in
the Off position.

4.5 Trouble Indicator
The RD-VRF monitors all critical functions of the unit through software diagnostics that continuously test and verify
unit operation. Internal failure of the RD-VRF will engage both relays based on the corresponding dipswitch settings
on both relays. The status LED will flash between amber and red. The buzzer will emit a constant sound (if the
BUZZER is enabled). Failure of the VRF’s internal power supply or a lack of power to the detector will result in the
status light remaining OFF (not illuminated). In this case, the most common cause of detector trouble would be a
break in the wiring between the control panel and the VRF.

5Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Cleaning of the external surfaces is best carried out using a damp cloth with a mild detergent or soap. Use a vacuum
cleaner with a soft brush to remove dust or contamination under the cover. Do not blow out the sensor with
compressed air.
CAUTION
Avoid the use of harsh cleaning materials, abrasives, and other organic solvents. Such materials may permanently
scratch the surfaces and damage the display window, labels, sensor, or instrument housing. High voltage terminals
(100-240VAC) are located within this detector, presenting a hazard to service technicians. Only qualified technicians
should open the detector case and service the internal circuits. Ensure power is removed from the detector prior to
cleaning the unit.
5.2 Sensor Poisons
The gas sensor in the detector is designed with extreme sensitivity to the environment. Alcohol, ammonia, cleaning
solvents, paint thinner, gasoline vapors, and aerosol propellants may cause nuisance alarms.
In addition, the sensing function may be deteriorated if it is exposed to a direct spray from aerosols such as paints,
silicone vapors, etc., or to a high density of corrosive gases (such as hydrogen sulfide or sulfur dioxide) for an
extended period.
•Avoid contamination by alkaline metals. Sensor characteristics may be significantly changed if the sensor is
contaminated by alkaline metals, especially salt-water spray.
•Sensor performance may be affected if exposed to a high density of reactive gases for an extended period,
regardless of the powering condition.
•If water freezes on the sensing element surface, the sensing material may crack, which will irreversibly affect
sensor characteristics.
•If water condenses on the sensor element surface and remains for an extended period, sensor
characteristics may temporarily drift. Light condensation under normal conditions of indoor usage would not
pose a significant problem for sensor performance.
•Regardless of its powering condition, if the sensor is exposed in extreme conditions such as very high
humidity, high temperatures, or high contamination levels of organic vapors or other gases for an extended
period, sensor performance may be impaired.
•Sensors cannot properly operate in a zero or low oxygen content atmosphere. They require the presence of
normal ambient oxygen in their operating environment to function properly.
•Sensor characteristics may be changed due to soaking or splashing the sensor with water.
•Avoid mechanical shock. Breakage of lead wires may occur if the sensor is subjected to a strong shock.

6.1 Testing
6.1.1 Operation Test
Detectors are factory calibrated for the specific gas required by the customers. Testing should be carried
out by using a gas mixture in the appropriate range, along with our calibration kit. Accuracy and bump
test procedures of gas detectors are required by code. These standards give guidance on the selection,
installation, use and maintenance of gas detectors intended for use in industrial and commercial
applications. The standards require accuracy and bump testing as well as recording of the performed
checks and it defines that all gas detectors should undergo periodical operational testing according to the
manufacturer’s specifications. Test results should be properly recorded.
6.2 Calibration and Test Kits

A Field Calibration Kit, Cal-Kit 1, and one bottle of calibration gas is needed to complete a gas test. These are
available through local distribution or from Macurco.
NOTE: RD-VRF must be tested or calibrated at regular intervals in accordance with local code requirements. It is
recommended to test or calibrate RD-VRF at least annually.

Cal-Kit 1 Information
Several detectors can be calibrated with one Cal-Kit. The only limitation is the amount of gas in the cylinder. The 17-
liter cylinder has approximately 85 minutes of continuous calibration run time. The gas cylinder should be replaced
when the pressure gauge on the regulator shows 25-psi or less.
Note: For optimum test results it is suggested that the unit be in clean air, green light on, and be in a low ambient air
flow.
6.3 Gas Testing
6.3.1 Testing the Relays
1. Open the Cal-Kit 1. Connect the 5,000ppm gas cylinder to the regulator.
2. Check the pressure gauge on the regulator. If you have 25-psi or less, you will need to replace the gas
canister.
3. Assemble regulator, hose and RD-VRF Test/Calibration Hood and place the Hood over the refrigerant sensor.
4. Turn on the regulator to start the gas flow and wait with the gas applied continuously.
5. When the gas concentration surpasses 1000 ppm relay 1 will activate and when the gas concentration
surpasses 2000 ppm relay 2 will activate.
Note: If the relays do not close within 60 seconds there are three possibilities:
a. Gas cylinder is empty, check the pressure gauge. Replace the gas cylinder if 25psi or less.
b. Unit needs to be re-calibrated (go through recalibration and re-test).
c. If detector needs servicing (return unit to factory for servicing).
6. Remove the gas from the sensor.

6.4 Field Calibration Procedure
Note: For optimum calibration results the unit should be in clean air and be in a low ambient air flow
Follow the procedure below for field calibration.
Zero the Sensor
1. Ensure that the sensor is exposed to clean air
2. Leaving the cover on, to enter the calibration menu, position the magnet left of the open slits (vents)
(roughly 4 seconds), in correspondence with the hall effect sensor (see Figure 6-1)
3. The LED will flash alternately green and blue, the buzzer will chirp once every 3 seconds if buzzer is enabled
4. Hold the magnet in place for 2 seconds
5. If successful, the LED will flash green and continue to chirp. If not successful, the LED remains yellow. In this
case, re-zeroing of the sensor was not performed, and the procedure must be repeated
6. To exit the calibration menu, if the user only wants to check the zero calibration, wait 1 minute for it to time
out and resume normal status.
Calibration
1. Assemble the 5,000-ppm gas cylinder and regulator together
2. Check the pressure gauge on the regulator. If you have 25-psi or less, you will need to replace the gas
canister.
3. Leaving the cover on, to enter the calibration menu, position the magnet near the point on the left of the
gas sensor (roughly 4 seconds), in correspondence with the hall effect sensor.
4. To skip zero calibration, leave the magnet in place for another 5 seconds or so.
5. Remove the magnet once the LED flashes alternately red and blue, the buzzer will chirp twice every 3
seconds if buzzer is enabled.
6. Place the RD-VRF Test/Calibration Hood from the regulator over the refrigerant sensor inlet exposing the
sensor to 5,000-ppm and wait 1 to 2 minutes for stabilization of the sensor reading.
7. To set the span value, leave the magnet in this position for 2 seconds.
8. To exit the calibration menu the user can wait 3 minutes or position the magnet for 5 seconds.
WARNING
If the user leaves the magnet positioned for more than 1 minute, an error is generated
and the LED flashes yellow. To get out of this condition, it is necessary to remove the
magnet and reposition it for 5 seconds.

7RD-VRF Communicator
7.1 Programming
7.1.1 To customize the RD-VRF detector you need an RD-VRF communicator. This device is a handheld keypad
that connects to the back of the RD-VRF detector.

7.2 The Communicator Settings:
•Zero Calibration
•Span Calibration
•Adjust Alarm threshold settings
•Adjust Hysteresis value settings
•To reset the device
•To change or view the Baud Rate
•To set the address of the RS-485 bus
•To show the firmware version of the detector
The keypad can be connected both when the detector is powered on and operating and when the detector is off.
Before opening the detector enclosure, be sure that all safety precautions have been considered.
If the user connects the keypad while the detector is warming up, the HEAT message appears
and all the LEDs light up. When the warm-up phase ends, the HEAT message disappears
and only the “ON” LED remains on.
Once connected, the calibration keypad will execute an auto test. This procedure allows to
detect possible internal errors. If a failure occurs, the error name will be displayed.
The possible errors are:

If one of the described errors occurs, the user can only disconnect and connect again the calibration keypad. If the
error is still present, please contact Technical Support 1-844-325-3050.
7.3 RD-VRF Communicator Menu
The calibration keypad has a menu with several options, each one of them allows different settings to be adjusted
on the detector. The following table provides additional details on each function.
