1.0 Introduction
Welcome to the ultimate madVR Envy remote control experience with the new RC2 remote control with intelligent
backlighting. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this second-generation remote is designed to enhance your
interaction with the madVR Envy, making it effortlessly intuitive and easy to use.
Building upon the foundation of the well-regarded MK1 remote, the RC2 is a significant upgrade both in terms of design
and functionality. It delivers on highly requested features, including motion activated backlit buttons, dedicated Back
and Info buttons, and two additional colored flex key buttons for expanded user customization. The RF antenna has also
been improved for increased reception and durability.
The RC2 provides a sleek new design that includes an ergonomic body and an aluminum face plate with backlit buttons.
The new design not only looks great but also feels great in the hand, with a balanced weight that makes it a pleasure to
use. The backlit buttons make it easy to use in a dark theater and the adjustable backlight allows users to choose their
preferred duration or turn it off altogether. Several other customizations are available to enhance your experience.
This guide covers everything you need to know to harness the full potential of your RC2 and customize it to your liking.

2.0 Quick Start
To get the most out of the RC2 and the available customizations, we recommend reading this guide in its entirety before
using the remote. However, the following is a quick overview to get started.
1. Decide between RF (default) and IR mode and set the switch in the battery compartment accordingly.
2. Insert the RF dongle into the Envy. If switching from the Envy MK1 remote, you must use the new RF antenna.
3. Update to the latest Envy Experimental Firmware.
4. Insert included AA batteries.
5. Customize the functions of each button as desired (Section 5.0).
6. Customize the function of the RC2 itself (Section 6.0).
7. If switching from the MK1 remote, check your Envy firmware first, or some buttons may not function.
3.0 Setup
This section covers everything you need to know to get started using your RC2.
3.0.1 Deciding Between RF and IR Mode
Like its predecessor, the RC2 offers both RF and IR functionality. We highly recommend using the RC2 in RF mode since it
has great range, does not require line of sight to the Envy, and can even be used if your Envy is in a different room.
Although the RF range and reception will vary based on the room construction and surrounding radio interference, in
some cases it is possible to have reliable range from fifty feet and beyond.
3.0.2 Using RF Mode and Installing the RF Antenna
To use the RC2 in RF mode, install the RF dongle which comes with the remote into one of the USB slots on the rear of
the Envy. The RF antenna is black, 4” long, and has a blue dot on the base to indicate it is compatible with the RC2. The
antenna supports positions of 0, 45 and 90 degrees. For the optimal reception we recommend using the antenna at the
0 degree position (facing straight back). We recommend installing the RF antenna even if you do not plan to use RF
mode, so that it does not get misplaced. The RC2 Activity LED will be green when transmitting in RF mode.

There is a toggle switch inside the RC2 battery compartment to select between RF and IR mode. By default, the switch is
set to RF mode, so no change is needed if using RF mode. However, if your remote was set to IR mode in the past, you
will need to return the switch to the RF position to use RF mode.

Important: If you are upgrading from the MK1 remote, you must replace your previous RF antenna with the one that
came with the RC2 remote. Antennas compatible with the RC2 have a blue dot on the base. Store your MK1 remote
without the batteries installed, and with the original RF antenna for safe keeping. Should you switch back to the MK1
remote, you will need to replace the RC2 RF antenna with the old one from the original remote.

3.0.3 Using IR Mode
IR mode, unlike RF, requires direct line of sight to the rear of the Envy. The IR dongle is short and stubby with a black cap
and came preinstalled in the rear of your Envy. If your Envy is located near a wall, you may be able to aim the RC2 mode
toward the wall for reception. Otherwise, you can plug a USB extension cable into the USB slot where the IR dongle was
installed and move the IR dongle to the other end of the cable. You can then position the IR dongle for line of sight to
the remote. The RC2 Activity LED will be red when transmitting in IR mode.
3.0.4 Battery Installation
Insert the two AA batteries included with your remote. Align them according to the polarity indicated within the battery
compartment. If installed properly the Activity LED will light up green (RF mode) or red (IR mode) with each button
press. Verify the Activity LED lights accordingly. Your remote control is now ready for use. See Section 4.0 and 5.0 for
important information before using the RC2.
3.0.5 Check Your Envy Firmware
To use the newly added Magenta, Cyan, Back and Info buttons, you must have Envy firmware 1.6.3.44 or later. To check
your firmware version, go to the Configuration menu and scroll to the Firmware Configuration menu. If your version is
older, choose Experimental under Build Type and select the latest firmware option there and proceed to install it.

4.0 Understanding the Button Functions
This section provides an overview of each button on the RC2. Note that each button is dual-function, supporting both a
press and a pressed-and-held (for 1 second) action. The actions for most buttons are listed in the Envy Remote Control
Configuration menu and are customizable there (see Section 5.0). The RC2 features the following:
1. Activity LED: Lights green (RF) or red (IR) to signal the remote's activity.
2. Power: Turns the Envy off or places in Standby mode at your choosing. The Envy cannot be powered back on
using the RC2 once it is powered off. To power it back on requires the use of a control system or a home
automation system that can send a Wake on LAN command. Alternatively, you can choose to place the Envy into
Standby when using the power off command. In Standby the unit will wake with the press of any button on the
remote.
3. Information: Brings up the Envy Information menus.
4. Configuration: Opens the Envy Configuration Menu, primarily for system-wide preferences and settings.
5. Settings: Opens the Envy Settings menus. Primarily for video processing options.
6. D-PAD: Used to navigate menus and select options. Hold arrow buttons for progressively faster scrolling.
7. Profiles: Provides quick access to the Profile menu. See https://madvrenvy.com/wp-

8. Back: Steps back through the menus or exits them entirely.
9. Flex Keys: Provides instant access to your favorite Envy settings, Profiles, and various system actions.

5.0 Customizing the Button Functions
The functions of most buttons can be easily viewed and customized in the Envy Remote Control Configuration menu. To access this
menu, press the Configuration button, then scroll to the Remote Configuration menu page. You can define separate actions for
when a button is pressed versus pressed and held for 1 second.
Note that certain actions are only available on specific buttons. For instance, the action to toggle MotionAI on and off can only be
assigned to the red or green flex buttons. Likewise, the option to control aspect ratio settings can only be assigned to the Profiles
button. However, you can easily create a Profile that contains one or multiple settings such as controlling the aspect ratio, and then
recall that profile using any of the Flex Keys.
6.0 Customizing the Remote Control
The RC2 is the most customizable and advanced remote control ever for a video processor. Like all things Envy, it is
designed to provide maximum flexibility for your personal preferences and exceptional ease of use, along with its best-
in-class image quality, of course. In this section we explain how you can control and customize the functions of the
remote control itself, including the intelligent backlight, pickup sensor, and Battery Saver Mode.
1. Pickup Sensor Activation: When picking up or moving the RC2, the backlight will automatically turn on by
default. To disable the pickup sensor, hold the Configuration + OK buttons for three seconds, until the Activity
LED flashes. Repeat to re-enable this feature. Note when the pickup sensor is disabled, the backlight will not
light when the RC2 is moved but will still light when any button is pressed.
2. Backlight Duration: The default backlight duration is 10 seconds. To increase the backlight duration by 1 second,
hold the red flex button + up arrow button for three seconds, until the Activity LED flashes. Repeat as desired,
increasing the duration up to a maximum of 30 seconds. Note, however, that increasing the backlight duration
can lead to shorter battery life. Hold the red flex button + down arrow button for three seconds to reduce the
duration by 1 second. Repeat as desired. The minimum backlight duration is 5 seconds.
3. Disable Backlight: If you wish to disable the backlight entirely, hold the Information + OK buttons for 3 seconds,
until the Activity LED flashes. Repeat to re-enable the backlight.
4. Battery Saver Mode (BSM): The RC2 is equipped with a BSM to significantly prolong battery life. BSM
intelligently recognizes that movement of the remote doesn't always equate to active use—such as when it's
shifted if resting in your lap or bumped on an armrest. To conserve battery life, BSM smartly reduces the
backlight duration to half its set duration in these scenarios, ensuring it stays on for the full time only if you
press any buttons. For users who typically disable a backlight to save battery, BSM offers a great middle ground,
maintaining the convenience of having the backlight, while still conserving battery life. Enable or disable BSM by
holding the red + cyan flex buttons for 3 seconds, until the Activity LED flashes three times. Note the shortest
backlight time is 5 seconds even in BSM.
5. Low Battery Indicator: When your batteries need replacing, all buttons on the RC2 will flash when you press any
button. Likewise, the Envy may alert you in the menus if your batteries are getting low.

6. Factory Reset: Reset the RC2 to its factory settings by holding the Profile + OK buttons for five seconds, until the
Activity LED flashes. Note that resetting the remote control does not change the button assignments in the Envy
Remote Configuration menu (see Section 4.0).
7. Pairing a New RF Dongle: By default, the RC2 comes already paired with its antenna and no pairing operation is
needed. However, if you misplace or break your antenna, upon receiving a new one, it will need to be paired to
the RC2. With the new antenna installed in the Envy, and with the Envy powered on, hold the RC2 Power + OK
buttons for three seconds, until the Activity LED begins flashing, then release the buttons. When the Activity LED
stops blinking, the RC2 is paired. This process usually completes within 15 seconds.
7.0 Care and Maintenance
Please follow these guidelines to help ensure the safe and long-lasting operation of your RC2.
1. Battery Safety and Management: Use only high-quality alkaline batteries for the best performance and
longevity. When replacing the batteries, ensure that they are inserted correctly according to the polarity
indicated inside the battery compartment. Do not mix old and new batteries or different brands, as this can lead
to leakage or decreased performance. Used batteries should be recycled or disposed of in accordance with local
regulations.
2. Cleaning: Keep the remote clean by regularly wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive materials that could
scratch the front aluminum plate. Do not use liquid cleaners or sprays, which could damage the electronic
components.
3. Food and Drinks: Keep the RC2 clear from food or drinks, which could spill onto the remote and damage the
electronics.
4. Storage: Store the remote in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures to prevent
damage. If you do not plan to use the remote for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent possible
leakage and store them separately following battery manufacturer guidelines.
8.0 Troubleshooting
In the event the RC2 does not function as expected, please see the following:
1. The Info, Back, Cyan, and Magenta buttons do not work properly. The other buttons work fine:
•If switching from the MK1 remote to the RC2, you must use Envy firmware 1.6.3.44 or later. See Section 3.0.5.
2. The Envy does not respond to the remote control:
•If the RC2 Activity LED does not light when pressing a button, replace the batteries and ensure they are inserted
with correct polarity.

•If using RF mode, make sure the RF antenna is plugged in, and that the antenna has a blue dot on its base. Also
make sure the toggle switch inside the remote's battery compartment is set in the RF position.
•If using IR mode, make sure the IR dongle is plugged in and that the toggle switch inside the remote's battery
compartment is set to IR. Make sure the remote control has a direct line of site to the rear of the Envy. Try
pointing the RC2 directly at the rear of the unit as a troubleshooting step.
3. The remote works but there is no backlight:
•The backlight is designed to be visible when used in a dark room. When used in a room with moderate lighting,
the backlight may be on, but unnoticeable. Double check the backlight in a dark room.
•Make sure the backlight was not disabled. Follow the instructions in Section 6.0 to try toggling the backlight on.
If that does not work, try resetting the RC2 to its factory defaults.
4. The backlight duration is shorter when I pick it up and don't press buttons compared to when I do press buttons:
•This is the Battery Saving Mode in action and as expected. See Section 6.0 for information on how to disable
BSM if desired.
5. I want to use IR mode, but the IR sensor is in the back of the unit and outside the line of sight:
•See Section 2.1.2.
6. The RF reception seems low, inconsistent, or often resulted in repeated button presses:
•The MK2 RF reception is designed to be strong. However, depending on room construction and conditions, such
as concrete walls and radio wave interference, it is possible your RF reception will not be as desired. Try moving
the RF antenna to other USB ports on the back of the Envy. Also try repositioning the RF antenna - for instance,
instead of using it at a 90 degree angle, aim it straight backward or place it at a 45 degree angle. If problems
persist, try changing the batteries. If that does not help, the only option may be to relocate the Envy where it
has less radio wave interference, or to switch to using a control system, or to using IR (and an IR repeater if/as
necessary).
7. The Envy does not power on when pressing the Power button on the RC2:
•See Section 4.0, “Power”.
