contains important safety and operating instructions for battery charger.
2. Before using battery charger, read all instructions and cautionary markings
on
(1) battery charger and (2) product using battery.
3. CAUTION - To reduce risk of injury, charge ONLY MAKITA type rechargeable
batteries usedinModel
UM401D. Other types of batteries may burst causing
personal injury and damage.
4. Do not expose charger to rain or snow.
5. Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by the battery charger

1. Use ONLY the Makita charger Model DC240 specified to charge the Makita

7. When replacing batteries, all batteries should be replaced at the same time.

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING MAXIMUM RUN
PERFORMANCEAND BATTERY LIFE
1. Charge the mower immediately after purchase.
2. Always recharge the mower after each use without fail.
3. We recommendthat you leavethe charger connected tothe mower evenafter
the chargingcycle is complete. The charger will switchintoits "maintenance
charge (tricklecharge)" mode and keep the battery fresh and fully charged.
4. Be sure to charge the mower every six months, when not using it for long

Unpacking
Your mower has beencompletely assembledat the factory except for the rear bag.
1. Remove the rear bag, instruction manual, charger and plastic bag containing acces-

Handle adjustment

Installingor removing blade

1. Wear gloves.
2. Turnthe mower on itsside to exposethe blade.
3. Holdthe blade holderwith 32 mmwrench
so that the other end of 32 mmwrench will
contact the underside of mower deck. Hold the hex bolt with 13 mm socket wrench
and turn it lightly counterclockwise until the 32 mmwrench is firmly heldby the under-
side of mowerdeck.
4. To loosenthe hex bolt, turnthe 13 mmsocket wrench counterclockwise while holding
downits top.
5. Remove the hex bolt, cup spring and blade. Be sure to remember the removal proce-
dures.
6. To installthe blade, follow the removal proceduresin reverse. Becareful not to install it
upsidedown. When installingthe blade, always make sure that the end of bladeholder
fits inthecup spring.
7. Tighten the hex bolt firmly with the wrenches provided. To tighten it, turn the 13 mm
socket wrench clockwise while holding down its top. When doing
so, the 32 mm
wrench shouldbe firmly held by the undersideof mower deck.

Blade sharpening
Keep the blade sharp and clean for best performance. A dull blade does not cut grass
cleanlyandevenly. It may overloadthe motor and waste more battery energy
1. Secure a screwdriver horizontallyin a vice.
2. Place the center hole in the blade on
screwdriver shank.
3. If the blade is balanced, it will remain in a
horizontalposition.
4. If either of the blade drops downward,
sharpen the heavy side until the blade is
balanced.

If you are recharging the
mower, stop rechargingand disconnect
the chargingplug.
2. Remove the blade as described in
“Installing or removing blade”.
3. Secure the blade in a vice or the like.
4. Carefully sharpen the cutting edges of
the blade with a file or sharpeningstone.
5. Check the balance of the blade as
describedin ”Blade balancing”.
6. Installthe blade and secure it by tighten-
ingthe bolt with the wrenches provided.

Installing mulchingplate
1. Turn off the interlock switch and removethe key. If you are recharging the mower,stop
recharging and disconnect the charging plug.
2. Turn the mower on itsside to expose the blade.
3. Install the two protrusions of the mulching plate into the holes in the deck. Push the
mulching plate intothe discharge opening untilthe hook
of the mulching plate is heldby
the undercover. Open the rear guard and make sure that the hook of the mulching plate
is properly held by the undercover.

Always install the mulching platewhenoperating the mowerwith the rear bag removed.

Mulching
While mulching, your new mower is designed to cut the grass clipptngsinto small pieces
and distribute them back into the lawn. Under normal conditions, the mulched grass will
biodegradequicklyto provide nutrients to the lawn.
Please review the following recommendationsfor optimum mulching performance.
1. Avoid mowing when the grass is wet from rain or dew. Wet grass may from clumps
which interfere with the mulching action and reduce run-time. The best time to mow
grass
is in the late afternoon when the grass is dry and the newly cut area will not be
exposedto direct sunlight.
2. For best mulching performance, set the cutting height to remove about one third of
the grass blade length, ideally no more than 1-1/2" at one time. If the lawn is over-
grown, it may be necessary to increase the cut height to reducethe pushing effort and
prevent overloadingthe motor. For extremely heavy mulching,it is advisable to first cut
at
a high cut height setting, and then recut to the final cut height. Otherwise, make
narrower cuts and mowslowly.
3. For best performance, keep the mower housing free of built-up grass. From time to
time turn off mower and wait for the blade to come to
a complete stop. Then unplug
the key and turn mower on its side. Usingan object suchas
a stick, wipe out any accu-
mulation
of grass in the blade area. Be careful of the sharp edges of the blade. Clean
often in wet, springgrass, and alwaysafter every use.
4. Certain types of grass or grass conditions may require that an area be mulched a
secondtime to fully dispersethe grass throughout the lawn. If cutting a secondtime, it
is advisable to cut perpendicular(across)the first cut pattern.
DO NOT CHANGE CUT
PATTERN INANY WAY THAT WOULD CAUSE MOWING DOWNA HILL.
5. Change your cutting pattern from week to week. This will help prevent matting and
grainingof the lawn.

protector which automatically cuts out to
break the circuit whenever heavy work is
prolonged. When it cuts out, turn off the
interlock switch and remove the key.

Maintenance & Storage
1. REMOVE KEY. Store it in a safe place out of the reach of children.
2. Clean your mower using only mild soap and a damp cloth. Do not spray or pour water
on your mower when cleaning.
3. Turn mower on its side and clean grass clippings that have accumulatedon the under-
side of mower deck.
4. Check all nuts, bolts, knobs, screws, fasteners, etc. for tightness.
5. Inspect moving parts for damage,breakage, and wear. Have repairsmadeon any dam-
agedor missing parts.
6. Recharge the batteries to a full charge. Do not store mower with discharged bat-
teries. Battery failure will occur in
a very short time if mower is stored without having a
fullcharge.We recommend that you charge batteries continuously while in storageand
during the off season.
7. Store mower indoors in a cool, dry place. Don’t store the mower and charger in loca-
tions where the temperature may reach or exceed40°C
(104°F).
CAUTION:
Always be sure that charger is unpluggedand disconnect DC output plug from the mower
before attempting to perform inspectionor maintenance.

Warranty Policy
Every Makita tool is thoroughly inspected and tested before leaving the factory. It is warranted to
be free of defects from workmanshlp and materials for the period
of ONE YEAR from the date of
originid purchase. Should any trouble develop during this one-year period, return the COMPLETE
tool, freight prepaid, toone of Makita’s Factory or Authorized Service Centers. If inspection shows
the trouble
is caused by defective workmanship or material, Makita will repair (or at our option,
replace) without charge.
This Warranty does not apply where:
repain have been made or attempted by others:
repairs arc required because of normal wear and tear
The tool hw been abused, misused or improperly maintained ;
alterations have been made tothe tool.
IN NO EVENT SHALL MAKITA BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR CON-
SEQUENTIAL DAMAGES
