7 Introduction
Dilution probes are used wherever dilution of the sample gas is necessary for the measurement of one
or several sample gas components. Examples are the measurement of toxic gas components, mois-
ture measurements or adjustment of the sample gas concentration to the analyser measuring range.
The M&C gas sample probe type SP190-H/DIL-EX2 T* is based on the SP180-H-EX2 T* probe, and is
used for continuous gas sampling and dilution.
M&C gas sample probes provide direct insitu ultra-fine filtration during continuous gas sampling for
analytic measurements. In this way, part of the necessary maintenance work for a system is
concentrated on a single point. This filter technology has the major advantage that dust mixtures
consisting of ultra-fine and coarse dusts can be optimally retained with the least possible maintenance
work.
Optimal adaptation of the sample probe to processing conditions and to measurement work is a
necessary condition for a measurement system to work smoothly. Basically, the gas sample should be
kept to a necessary minimum. This is made possible thanks to optimised downstream gas processing
using M&C components. Only in this way it is possible to reduce maintenance to a minimum while
ensuring maximum availability.
The SP190-H/DIL-EX2 T* is certified for appropriate use in the specified Ex zones.
Only operate the gas sample probe according the specifications stated in this
instruction manual and in the extended manufacturer documents.
The type SP190-H/DIL-EX2 T* is not designed to separate the gas explosion zone
without appropriate precautions by the operator.
The gas sample probe is classified for three different temperature classes:

9 Applications
The electrically heated M&C dilution probe is applicable for such processes, where the measuring
procedure or the handling of the process gas requires the dilution of the sample respectively the
component to be measured. Typical applications are the use with toxic gases, the moisture
measurement and the emission measurement in flue gases.
The electrically heated M&C gas sample probe SP190-H/DIL-EX2 T* is used for continuous gas
sampling in processes with dust densities of up to 1 g/m³, operating pressure of up to max. 2 bar abs.,
temperatures of up to a maximum of 600 °C [1112 °F] or for high gas humidity. The gas sample probe
SP190-H/DIL-EX2 T* is equipped with a protective cover and can be used for outdoor mounting.
The M&C dilution probe SP190-H/DIL-EX2 T* is based on the M&C gas sample probe SP180-H-EX2
T*.
Do not use the sample gas probe to extract gases or gas compositions,
which could be potentially explosive without the presence of air. Do not
use gases or gas compositions which can alter the relevant safety-
related material properties of the probe materials. The gas or gas
composition needs to be free of particles which could cause, in
combination with the materials of the gas sample probe, sparks by
friction or impact.
This also applies to specific gases or gas compositions, which enter
the gas sample probe via the calibration gas adapter/back purge
connections. Make sure that all gases or gas compositions which enter
the sample gas probe, do not react with the environment or the
process.
Prevent any potential source of ignition (for example burning or
smoldering particles, small smoldering fires, foreign objects) from
entering the gas sample probe during operation.
The type SP190-H/DIL-EX2 T* is not designed to separate the gas
explosion zone without appropriate precautions by the operator.

10 Dilution principle
The functional principle of the dilution unit is based on ultrasonic flow through a critical orifice (see Fig.
1). The flow through the orifice is constant when the differential pressure via the orifice is higher than
500 mbar. For the atmospheric inlet pressure (PIN = 1020 mbar), this means a pressure at the orifice
outlet (POUT) of less than 520 mbar absolute.
The necessary vacuum at the orifice outlet is produced by an injector operated with dilution gas.
Depending on the critical orifice and injector type, dilution rates can be between 10:1 and 500:1 for
injector I. The table below gives an overview of the dilution factor and sample gas volume using the

11 Description
The sample probes are designed for easy installation, reliable operation and trouble-free maintenance.
Advantages are:
•Gas sampling with dust-laden processes;
•low volume, fast response time;
•filter elements can be changed without tools and without disconnecting the sample line;
•the filter chamber can be easily cleaned;
•the probe tube can be cleaned without dismantling the probe;
•self-regulated electrical heating with under temperature alarm contact, and different probe tubes
and pre-filters as option;
•with calibration gas connection as standard.
The 75 mm [≈2.95"] ceramic filter element with a porosity of 2 µm and a large surface is located in the
heated stainless steel filter housing of the probe. The gas sample probe is heated up to
+120 °C/+160 °C/+180 °C [248 °F/320 °F/356 °F] (see T-class in the technical data) using a special
self-regulated heating element. No thermostat or temperature limiter is necessary. A separate thermo
switch is provided for under temperature monitoring (NO).
The dilution unit including the critical orifice is mounted directly at the heated part of the probe, to avoid
a drop of temperature below the dewpoint at the dilution unit. This keeps the dilution unit at a stable
temperature. The incorporated pre-heater heats up the dilution gas to the probe temperature. The
sample gas probe can be heated up to max. 180 °C [356 °F].
To calibrate a gas analyzer, test gas can enter the probe via the integrated test gas connection.
The necessary dilution gas pressure can be adjusted by the precision pressure controller with
pressure gauge. A vacuum pressure gauge monitors the function of the dilution injectors.
The pressure controller and pressure gauges, necessary for the dilution function, have to be ordered
separately. Set-A will be mounted directly at the probe. The control unit -S will be mounted externally,
and is equipped with an additional shut-off ball valve and a flowmeter to adjust the test gas quantity.
The dilution probe has a standard dilution rate of 10:1 up to 500:1 (injector I). Higher dilution rates of
50:1 to 2000:1 are optional (injector II).
The construction of the probe guarantees an operation which is independent from the process
temperature and pressure (see technical data), and is easy to maintain.

12 Probe design
The diluted sample gas outlet at the probe is designed for a 8 mm (DN 6/8) tube.
The optional stainless steel sampling tube of one meter length (Part No.: 02S9200) can be connected
to the G 3/4” thread of the mounting flange. The maximum operating temperature of the stainless steel
sampling tube is 600 °C [1112 °F]. The modular design of our sample probes allows the usage of all
M&C sample tubes and prefilters with G 3/4" connection thread. This guarantees an optimum adaptation
to the process conditions.
