Introduction and Presentation
Read this section to get a basic knowledge of your M4 system.

Introduction
The M4 is our heavyweight acoustic receiver, combining the latest digital signal processing with
the smartest software. This means that true multifunction channel operation is available and there
is no compromise between transmission range and signal detection. We have designed the M4’s
multifunctional capacity to accommodate a series of full-function channels allowing simultaneous
use of standard sensors, net sounders – including narrow band – and high resolution net sounders.
All of these are available over an extended frequency range and with selectable configurations for
ultramodern net monitoring systems.
The M4 incorporates a host of features that are ready to be implemented, including sensor cross-
referencing for positioning and distance, and sensor remote control.
The M4 receiver is built to be configured and upgraded using standard software tools and operated
with Mac OS, Firefox® Web Browser and Java™ Runtime Environment (JRE).

Equipment List
To install a M4 system with 2 Mac minis, you need the following hardware and software
equipment.
Hardware
• 1 Mac mini i7
• 3GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz)
• 8 GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
• 1TB Fusion Drive
• Intel Iris Graphics
Note: One Mac mini i7 can work with up to 2 monitors.
• 1 Mac mini i5
• 2.6GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz)
• 8 GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
• 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
• Intel Iris Graphics
Note: Add a Mac mini i5 only if you need to work with 2 additional monitors.
• 1 M4 receiver
• 1 Mx hydrophone junction box
• 1 USB to Ethernet adapter
• 2 to 4 thunderbolt to HDMI/VGA/DVI adapter
• 2 Scala software dongles.
• 2 Mac mini mount
• 1 wireless trackball mouse
• 1 Ethernet switch
Optional equipment (not included)
• 2 to 4 monitors
• 1 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to prevent problems if the mains power fails
(recommended). Size: 500VA.
• Additional hydrophone junction boxes
• 1 test hydrophone that you can keep on board and connect to the receiver to do functional tests.
• 1 NMEA converter junction box (P/N NC-2-TEMP) to receive temperature data from
hydrophones
• 1 NMEA multiplexer to receive NMEA data and display them in Scala: ShipModul MiniPlex-3E-
N2K if using NMEA2000 and NMEA0183 or Miniplex-3E if using only NMEA0183.

Computer Configuration
Read this section to learn how to configure the Mac computer.
Important: This section applies only to technicians from Marport offices.
Configuring Mac Mini Settings
If you do not have a computer already configured and you are beginning from scratch, you need to
apply all the following settings on both Mac Mini computers.
Disabling Automatic Updates
You need to disable automatic updates because some applications installed on the computer may
not be compatible with the latest versions of OS.
Procedure
1. From the top left corner of the screen, click Apple Menu > System Preferences> App Store.
2. From the App Store window, unselect Automatically check for updates.
Disabling Sleeping Mode
You need to change Energy Saver settings.
Procedure
1. From the top left corner of the screen, click Apple Menu > System Preferences> Energy
Saver.
2. From Turn display off after, drag the handle to Never.

3. Deselect Enable Power Nap and Put hard disks to sleep when possible.
4. Some versions of Mac OS may also have the option Start up automatically after a power failure:
select it.
Changing Security & Privacy Settings
You need to change the security and privacy settings to be able to open applications you
downloaded.
Procedure
1. From the top left corner of the screen, click Apple Menu > System Preferences> Security &
Privacy.
2. To be able to make changes, click the lock at the bottom of the window and enter the password
if there is one.
3. Deselect Require password.

4. Select Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere.
5. If you are under OS X Sierra, Anywhere option may not be displayed by default. To display
Anywhere:
a) From the top right corner of the screen, click the magnifying glass and type Terminal.
b) Select Terminal from the results.
c) From the terminal, enter sudo spctl --master-disable.
d) Press enter.
Anywhere option is now displayed in your Security & Privacy preferences.
Changing Desktop Wallpaper and Screen Saver
You need to disable the screen saver and put a Marport wallpaper.
Procedure
1. From the top left corner of the screen, click Apple Menu > System Preferences> Desktop &
Screen Saver.

2. From the tab Screen Saver, select Start after: Never.
3. From the tab Desktop, click Folders, then the add icon from the bottom left corner.
4. Select the Downloads folder and click Choose.

5. From Downloads, select Marport wallpaper (See Downloading Software Applications on page
18 to know where to find Marport wallpaper).
Adding a Virtual Keyboard
If you do not have a keyboard, you can add a virtual keyboard to the screen and type words using
the mouse.
Procedure
1. From the top left corner of the screen, click Apple Menu > System Preferences> Keyboard.
2. Select Show Keyboard, Emoji, & Symbol Viewers in menu bar.
3. Close the window.

4. From the top right corner of the screen, click the little flag corresponding to the keyboard
language preferences, then select Show Keyboard Viewer.
Results
A virtual keyboard is displayed on the screen. You can change its size by dragging its corners.
Disabling Automatic Search of Bluetooth Keyboard
You need to disable the Bluetooth Setup Assistant.
Procedure
1. From the top left corner of the screen, click Apple Menu > System Preferences> Bluetooth.
2. Click Advanced.
3. Deselect Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if no keyboard is detected.

Installing Software Applications
Specific applications are required to correctly run the system.
Downloading Software Applications
Some software applications required to configure and use the M4 system are already installed
on the computer. Marport offices need to download from a Marport FTP server and from the
DealerWeb additional applications.
About this task
Marport offices only.
Procedure
1. Enter the following FTP server address: ftp://updates.marport.fr:2121.
2. Enter the name and password (see with support team for logins).
3. From m3> m3_software_installation, copy the following files and paste them in your
Downloads folder.
• Firefox 34.0.5.dmg (see Installing Mozilla Firefox on page 20)
• Marport_Wallpaper (see Changing Desktop Wallpaper and Screen Saver on page 14)
4. If you need to download a VMware Fusion license under version 10, you need to do a specific
procedure because older versions are not sold anymore:
Note: Compatible VMware Fusion licenses are the following:
• Yosemite or Mavericks OS: Fusion 7 PRO
• Sierra OS: Fusion 8.5 PRO
• El Capitan OS: Fusion 8 PRO
a) Buy a license for VMware Fusion 10.
b) Downgrade the license to the version you need.
c) Guidance can be found on VMware Fusion website: https://kb.vmware.com/s/
article/2006975.
5. To download Scala:
a) From Mozilla Firefox web browser, go to the DealerWeb page: https://dealerweb.marport.fr/
Default.aspx.
b) Click Display Software> Scala.
c) Click Download next to the release version you want (latest is on top).

6. To download Mosa:
a) From the DealerWeb page, click Sensors> Tools.
b) Click Download next to the release version you want (latest is on top).
7. To download Marport Tools:
a) From the DealerWeb page, click Receivers> Firmware.
b) From Firmware Type select Marport Tools.
c) Click Download in front of the latest firmware version with a Release diffusion status.
Results
The files you downloaded from the DealerWeb are saved in your Downloads folder. (See Installing
Scala and Scala Replay on page 22, Installing Mosa on page 22, Installing Marport Tools on
page 23.)
What to do next
You can install these software applications.
Installing VMware Fusion
VMware Fusion installation file is already on the computer. You need to install VMware Fusion and
configure some settings on the Mac mini i7 computer only.
About this task
The version of VMware Fusion that is on the computer depends on the Mac OS:
• Yosemite or Mavericks OS: Fusion 7 PRO.
• El Capitan OS: Fusion 8 PRO.
• Sierra OS: Fusion 8.5 PRO.
• High Sierra OS: Fusion 10 PRO.
Procedure
1. Double-click VMware Fusion *.dmg file to install it.
