of this loudspeaker to oer true musicality.
Coltrane 3 SE presents a balance of intuitive design
and technological expertise. The result is music
as it should be, with vivid dynamics and a

Our aim has always been to recreate sound as it
was recorded - bringing you closer to the live energy
and spirit of music.
For this level of detail, it’s important to ensure that
your system is of equal match to your loudspeakers.
Your amplifier, source components, cables and even
recordings can aect the sound of Coltrane 3 SE.
It’s vital to set-up your loudspeakers correctly

Initial setup
Burning-in your loudspeakers
Your newly unpacked Coltrane 3 SE loudspeakers
need considerable playing time in order to
reach their optimum performance.
1. Connect the loudspeakers to your system
2. Put the CD in your CD player or use the files on the USB drive
3. Choose track 1 and set it on repeat
4. Set the volume to a moderate level
We recommended the use of the burn-in track (CD/USB) to
speed up this process. Due to the high-tech materials used in
the drivers, Coltrane 3 SE may sound a bit harsh at first.
Aer approximately 50 hours of playing your loudspeakers will
sound much better. Aer about 200 hours of playing, your
system will be optimised; the sound will be more open, detailed
and display more natural musical warmth.
Please allow the audio to run for a minimum of 24 hours
before adjusting the placement of the loudspeakers in your
listening room.

Connecting your
loudspeakers
Wiring method
Connections
Choosing cables
To get the most of Coltrane 3 SE please consider the
following when connecting them to your system.
The cables you use can have a dramatic eect on the sound of
your loudspeakers. Be sure to use the same brand, type and
length of cable for each channel. Mixing dierent types and/or
lengths of cable can upset the precise timing and balance of
your loudspeakers.
Coltrane 3 SE is designed with bi-wiring in mind. If you prefer
bi-amping, we recommend that you use the same type of cable
for the best sound reproduction. For single-wire applications
please use the enclosed jumpers.
Always turn o the power of your entire system before making
connections to your speakers.
We recommend using an amplifier with su∏cient power:
typically a minimum of 40 watts.
On the back of each Coltrane 3 SE cabinet, you will find
two pairs of WBT Nextgen terminals that will accept any
standard connections.
In order to obtain the best localisation of instruments and
voices, as well as deep, natural bass, it is important to connect
your loudspeakers in-phase. The connectors on the speakers are
clearly marked with + (red) and - (white) symbols. Your amplifier
and loudspeaker cables should also be clearly marked. Keep all
markings consistent to ensure in-phase connections.
It is important to make sure that contact to the terminals is
good and the connectors are tight. Tighten the terminal posts
and then, aer a few days, retighten to make sure that the
connections haven’t become loose.

7
Room acoustics A good listening room has just the right amount
of reflection and absorption.
The performance of any loudspeaker depends on the speaker’s
location in the room and the acoustic conditions in that part of
the room. Furnishings, size and proportions all aect tonal
balance, imaging and bass characteristics. Large areas of glass,
mirror, or wood panelling will reflect sound waves and oen
result in brittleness and extreme brightness. You can correct this
by breaking up these sound waves with soer surfaces like
curtains or wall hangings - try to create random reflections.
Allow time to experiment with the placement of your speakers
- eort at this stage will reward you with good sound
optimisation in your room.

Loudspeaker placement
Every room is shaped and decorated dierently
and therefore presents unique requirements for
the positioning of loudspeakers.
Your loudspeakers will function at their best when placed on a
flat, stable surface. Ideally, the space between the loudspeakers
should be clear and the speakers should be centred on the rear
wall. We recommend experimenting with the placement of your
loudspeakers in order to obtain the best balance, openness and
perception of depth.
For the best results, Coltrane 3 SE should be no closer than 80cm
(31.5”) from the rear wall. Marten loudspeakers should not be
placed close to a side wall, as reflections from these can disturb
the depth of the sound image.
The listening distance should be no closer than 3m, but
preferably 3.5m or greater.
On the back of each Coltrane 3 SE loudspeaker, you will find a
dial that will allow you to adjust the bass by 1 dB in four steps.
Rotating the knob clockwise increases the sensitivity, and
rotating it anti-clockwise decreases the sensitivity.
Coltrane 3 SE loudspeakers deliver excellent imaging. To make
the most of this, the loudspeakers should be toed in towards
the listening area to focus the sound.
Ideally, your listening position and each loudspeaker
should form an equilateral triangle. The goal is to have a
balanced sound. Track 2 of the enclosed CD / USB can be
used to help focus the soundstage. With this track, you
should be able to place the recorded voice in the centre of
your speaker arrangement.
The amount of toe-in will depend on the room environment and
dimensions, as well as your listening preferences. Take time to
experiment with your listening position and the position of your
loudspeakers. This will give you a more precise sound image.

high-tech product in your home.

3. Blue In Green - Tommy Kotter

Because many dierent materials are used in the making of the
loudspeakers, all-in-one cleaning materials should not be used.
Never use abrasive materials or cleaning fluids.
The cabinet and other parts should only be cleaned with a so,
dry cloth or one slightly dampened with water.
