MechanicalInstallation
TheU‐Hubisdesignedtobemountedinastandard19”rackenclosure.
Wheretheprocessorisusedinafixedinstallation,aslongasthebottomunitissupportedandtherearenogapsbetweenunits,
itisacceptabletouseonlythefrontpanel19”rackholeswhenfittingitinastandardrackenclosure.IftheU‐Hubismountedin
amobilerackitisimportantthattherearorsidesaresupportedwithasuitableracksupportbracket.Damagecausedby
insufficientsupportisnotcoveredbythewarranty.
Topreventdamagetothefrontpanelitisrecommendedthatplasticcupsorwashersarefittedunderneaththerackmounting
boltheads.
ItispossibletousetheU‐Hubwithoutventilationgapsbetweenotherrackproductsaslongastherearenoproductswhich
generateextremehightemperatures,Amplifiersforexample.IfU‐Hubsareinthesamerackitisessentialthatadequate
measuresforcoolingareprovidedinaccordancewiththeAmplifiermanufacturersguidelines.Thisshouldensureaminimumof
heattransfertotheU‐Hub.

port1ODU.Thiswouldusuallybeusedasthe“send”tothefirstarray.Areturnfromthearraywouldbeconnectedtothefirst
linkinconnection.Audio2iscombinedwiththesecondODUinthelinkedpairallowingaudiotobefedtoasecondarray,aside
hangforexample.Thenetworkreturnfromthisarraycomesbacktothesecondlinkin.Audio3isconnectedtothelinkoutof
thispairandcanbeusedtorouteouttoathirdarraysuchasthesub‐wooferstack.Finally,theU‐Netreturnfromthesubsis
connectedtoU‐Netport2ontheU‐Hubtocompletetheloop.

ThefirstoftheseiscombinedontotheU‐NetPort1whichisconnectedtothefirstcabinetofthemainarrayviaaPWAXXXXXU‐
NettoU‐Net+AudioadaptorwhichsplitsthefeedfromtheU‐NetcabletoaU‐NetonlycableandanAESspecaudiocable
terminatedinastandard3‐pinXLR.TheXLRisconnectedtotheaudioinput.Theaudioisdaisychainedbetweencabinetsusing
standardaudiolinkcables.
WhenthefinalnetworkcableisroutedbacktotheU‐Hubitisterminatedusingthefirstofthelinkpairs.Thelinkpairslinkthe
networkconnections(firsttwotwistedpairs)butNOTtheaudiomeaningthatthelinkoutcanbeusedtorouteacompletely
independentaudiofeedconnectedtotheAudio2inputuptothesidehanginthesameway.
Thereturnfromthesidehanggoestothesecondlinkpairinputwiththeoutputalsocarryingaudioinput3tofeedthesubarray.
Finally,thelastnetworkconnectiongoesfromthefinalsubbacktoport2ontheU‐HubtoclosetheU‐Netloop.

ForeachaudioinputthereisafemaleXLRconnectorforanalogueorAESsignals.
TheHOT,+or‘inphase’connectionshouldbemadetopin2oftheXLRconnector.
TheCOLD,‐or‘outofphase’connectionshouldbemadetopin3oftheXLRconnector.
Pin1oftheXLRconnectorsisinternallyconnectedtothechassis.TheshieldoftheinputcableshouldalwaysbeconnectedPin
1oftheXLRtoensurethatEMCperformanceandregulationsaremet.
Usingunbalancedconnections
Pleasenotethattheuseofunbalancedconnectionsisnotrecommended,howeverwhenconnectingtheU‐Hubtoanunbalanced
audiosource,thesignalconductorshouldbeconnectedtoXLRpin2.The‘Cold’conductororcablescreenshouldbeconnected

InputcablesshouldbebalancedXLRusing3‐corecablewithashield.MostsignalprocessingandmixingproductsalsouseXLR
connections,sothecablecanbeamaletofemaleXLRor“microphone”cable.
NetworkConnectionsshouldbemadeusingODUU‐NetcablesoradaptorsavailableasaccessoriesfromMartinAudio.
IPSelection
TheU‐HubcancommunicateovertheethernetnetworkwhichhasbeenconfiguredforstaticordynamicIP.Thedefaultis
dynamicIPwherethenetworkhasaDHCPservertoassignindividualIPaddressestoallnodesdetectedonthenetwork.Thisis
extremelystraightforwardforaplugandplaysystemwhichiswhyDomesticroutersareconfiguredtoactasaDHCPserverby
default.StaticIPremovestherequirementforaDHCPserveronthenetworksoisfrequentlythechoiceformoreadvanced
systems.
TheU‐HubcanbeconfiguredforStaticIP,therearetwomethodstoenablethis.Youwillneedtoknowtherangeforallother
productsonthenetworkandassignanIPaddresswrithingthesamerangebutwithanaddressuniquetotheU‐Hub.
YoucanselectthedefaultStaticIPaddressbyusingtheIPResetswitchonthefrontpanel.Pressandholdtheswitchfor
approximately3secondsandtheU‐HubwillbesettoStaticIPwithanaddressof169.254.19.71.Thedefaultaddressgivesyou
theflexibilitytoconnecttotheU‐HubwithouthavingtoadjustyourPCLANsettings,ifthePCisindynamicmodeitwillself‐
assignalinklocaladdressinthe169.254.xxx.xxxdomain.Ifyournetworkisconfiguredforstaticmode,theU‐Hubwillbe
immediatelydiscoverableaslongasyournetworkisinthe169.254.xxx.xxxrangeandaslongasthereisn’tanotherdevicewith
thesameIP.TheprincipalintentionofthismodeistogiveyouimmediateconnectiontotheU‐Hub,soyoucanchangetheIPto
anumberofyourchoice
YoucanalsochangetheIPmodeviaVu‐Net(SeetheVu‐Netchapter)usingtheright‐clickmenu.Notethatifyouareinthe
defaultdynamicmodeandyouchangetoastaticIPaddressoutsidethe169.254.xxx.xxxrangeyouwillloseconnectionwiththe
U‐HubuntilyoureconfigureyourPCtostaticmodeinthesamerange.
WhentheU‐HubhasbeensettostaticIP,eithermanuallyorusingthedefaultstaticIPmode,theStaticIPfrontpanelLEDwill
illuminateyellow.

IfaU‐HubhasbeenpreviouslyconfiguredforstaticIPitcanquicklybesettodynamicusingtheIPresetswitch.Theresetisa
