This Service Manual describes the operation,
disassembly,troubleshooting, and repairof Maytag®
Dishwashers.It is intended for useby authorized
servicer’swho troubleshoot andrepair these units.
NOTE: It is assumed that users of this manual are
familiar with the use of tools and equipment used
totroubleshoot and repairelectrical, and
mechanical systems; and understand the
terminology used to describe and discuss them.
Related Publications
This is a base service manual, covering a range of
similar models. It is intended to be used in conjunction
with the Parts Manual and Technical Sheet covering
specific model being serviced.
General Precautions and Warnings
•Disposeof discarded appliance and shipping or
packing material properly.
•Do not allow children to play in or on dishwasher.
•Do not abuse, sit, stand or play on door or racks of a
dishwasher.
•Useonly detergents and rinse agents recommendedfor
useina dishwasher.
•Store dishwasherdetergent and rinse agents out of the
reachof children.
•Ifthedishwasher drains into a food disposer, make
suredisposeris completely empty before running
dishwasher.
•Repairsshouldbe done by a qualified technician.
•Do not tamper with controls.
•Donottouch the heating element during or immediately

•Load sharp knives with the handles up to reduce the
risk of cut-type injuries or damaging seal.

wires are NOT to be used as current carrying
conductors.
•Standardacceptedcolor coding forground wires
is green or green with a yellow stripe.

• Observe all local codes and ordinances.
•Disconnectelectrical powerto dishwasher before
servicing.
•Connectdishwasher to agrounded metal,
permanentwiring system.
•DONOT ground to gasline.
•DO NOT ground to cold water pipe if pipe is
interrupted by plastic, non-metallic gaskets, or
otherinsulating (non-conducting)materials.
•Check with a qualified electrician if you are not
surethis appliance isproperly grounded.
•Thisdishwasher is designedto operate on
regular house current (120 V, 60 Hz). Use a
circuit equipped with a 15 ampere fuse or circuit
breaker.Use a 20ampere fuse if dishwasheris
connectedwith a food wastedisposer.
•Undercertain conditions, hydrogen gasmay be
produced in a hot water system that has not
beenused for 2weeks or more.HYDROGEN
GAS IS EXPLOSIVE. If hot water system has
notbeen used for sucha period, before using
dishwasher, turn on all hot water faucets and let
waterflow from eachfor severalminutes. This will
releaseany accumulated hydrogengas.
HYDROGEN GAS IS FLAMMABLE. Do not
smoke or use an open flame during this time.
•Do not store or use combustible materials,
gasolineor otherflammable vapors andliquids in
the vicinity of this or any other appliance.
•Do not wash plastic items unless marked
"dishwashersafe" or theequivalent. Ifnot
marked,check with manufacturerfor
recommendations.Items that arenot dishwasher
safe may melt and create a potential fire hazard.

Electrical Test Equipment
Theequipment requiredto servicethese models depends
largelyupon the condition encountered. Locatinga
malfunctionwill often require the useof electrical testing
equipment such as:

Clamp-OnAmmeter
MotorTestCord
Appliance Test Meter
AnAppliance Test Meter is a multi-purpose tester
combininganAC/DC voltagetester with amulti-range
ohmmeter.
The easiest means of testing electrical components is
"Continuity Testing" with an appliance meter. Continuity
is a complete or continuous path from one point in an
electrical circuit to another.
Theobvious advantagesof being ableto check electrical
componentsand circuits without power applied isone of
thefeatures of the Ohmmeter. Multipleranges allow
accuratedetermination of resistances ofboth single
components and entire circuit paths. Resistance is
measuredin "Ohms."
To avoid risk of personal injury or death due to
electrical shock:
Alwaysbe sure the power has been disconnected
beforemaking resistance measurements. Failure to
do so will also result in damage to your meter!
Internalbatteries provideall thepower neededto
make resistance checks. They should be checked
at least once a year and replaced as needed.
Continuity Testing: is a process of eliminating electrical
componentsinvolved ina givenfunction ofthe appliance,
until the inoperative part is found. By reviewing the list of
possibleelectrical problems undera given condition,and
thenperforming appropriate continuitychecksof the parts
involved,you should be abletolocate the electrical
componentwhich isinoperative.
NOTE: When checking components or circuit paths for
continuity, external wiring should be disconnected to
eliminatefalse readings throughexternal paths. Isolate
what you want to test.
Digital Test Meter
can be used to check for open
or closed circuits, measure
resistance,AC and DC volts,
andtemperature.
Analog Test Meter
can be used to check for
open or closed circuits,
measureresistance,AC and
DCvolts, andtemperature.

VOLTAGE CHECKS
Generally, these checks will consist of taking readings
at the wall receptacle in order to determine the
availability of voltage to the product. Voltage checks on
individualcomponents ofa product arenot
recommended due to the possibility of electrical shock.
Componentpart testing is bestaccomplishedthrough
continuity checks with anAppliance Test Meter.
NOTE: Use of the meter on voltage higher than the
indicatedrange may cause permanentdamage to the
meter. To prevent damage, firstselect highest range and
thenlower the rangefor readings which fallwithin the
lowerscale.
Clamp-On Ammeter
can be used to detect shorts.
Overloadson thecircuit breaker
or fuse can be traced
toeither the appliance
or circuit breaker by
checking the current
draw.
Each circuit in an appliance has a "Normal" current
draw, which is an indicationof the performance of that
circuit. Current draw levels of less than or more than
normalgive clues to possible malfunctions. Theclamp-
onammeter measures these circuits withoutbreaking
the circuit by measuring the strength of the magnetic
fielddeveloped aroundeach conductor. Currentisread
by separating the conductors and clamping the jaws of
theammeter around each conductoronwhich current is
read. Lowamperage readings indicateproblems, such
asdamaged heating elements, etc. Highamperage
readingsindicate the unit beingtestedis operating under
anincreased mechanical or electrical load.
NOTE: Overloads on a circuit breaker or fuse can be
traced to the product being tested or the circuit breaker
(or fuse) by checking the products current draw. If the
amperagereading is less thanthe breaker reading,the
breaker or fuse box is at fault.
Use of Ammeter on dishwasher:
1. Motor Current - the reading can be taken at the
leads on the motor start relay or at the male connec-
tor.
2. Heating Element Current - The reading can be
taken using either lead to the element.
Motor Test Cord
A motor test cord may be used to electrically check
operationof thevarious electrical componentswithout
removing them from the unit. Testing in this manner
merelydetermines whether or notthe part will function
independentlyof other electrical components. Inorder to
make accurate tests, proper connection of the motor test
cord is important. With the aid of the drawings under
Drive MotorTest, installation of the motor test cord may
be done quickly and accurately.
Grounding and Polarity
Thereceptacle used forall Maytag products operatingon
120VAC must beproperly grounded andpolarized.
Thepower cord usedon the appliances shouldbe
equippedwith athree (3)prong polarizedgrounding plug

receptacle.

pluggeddirectly intoa properly groundedand polarized
receptacle.
It is the responsibility of the person installing the
applianceto assure it isadequately grounded and
polarized at the point of installation, taking into
considerationlocal conditions and requirements. In
caseswhere only a two(2) prong receptacle is available,
it is the personal responsibility of the consumer to have it
replacedwith aproperly groundedthree (3)prong
receptacle. Allgrounding and wiring should bedone in
accordance with National, State, and Local codes. DO
NOT USE AN ADAPTER PLUG WITH THIS
APPLIANCE.
ELECTRICAL TESTS

•Disconnectelectrical powerto dishwasher before
servicing.
•Always plug test cord into a properly grounded
receptacle.
•Alwaysmake connection to componentsbefore
plugging test cord into receptacle.
WATER VALVE TEST
TheWaterValvemay be checkedwithout removing it from
theDishwasher.
To check the Water Valve for operation, hook up the test
cordas follows:
Wax Motor Check
Detergent / Rinse Aid Dispenser
A single Wax Motor is used to activate both the release of
theDetergent Cup Coverand the rinseaid fromthe
reservoir.
To check the operationof the WaxMotor,removal from
theDispenser Retaineror Inner Dooris not necessary.
First, snap the Detergent Cup Door shut. Then, connect
a Power Test Cord across the two terminals of the Wax
Motor. Plug the Power Test Cord into a 120 VAC
receptacle. The plunger in the center of the Wax Motor
should "push out" and actuate the Dispenser in
approximately45-60 seconds. Removevoltage to the
Wax Motor and allow the plunger to retract into the Wax
Motor. Apply voltage to the Wax Motor again and observe
forproper liftingoftherinse aid plunger.

Wax Motor Check- Vent
A single continuous duty wax motor is used to operate
thevent.
Connect a Power Test Cord across the two terminals of
the Wax Motor. Plug the Power Test Cord into a 120 VAC
receptacle.The pungershouldextend (pushout) and
force the Vent Flap tight against the vent opening in
approximately45-60 seconds.When power isremoved
from the Wax Motor, the plunger should retract along with
the Vent Flap, opening the vent.

Section 3. Cycles & Options
Cycle Description
AutoClean Designed to auto select the number of fills and length of wash time based on soil level
of the dish load. Water usage ranges from 3 to 8 gallons.
HeavyWash Designed toprovide a longercycle for washingitemswith heavy
food soils. Water usage is 8 gallons.
NormalWash Designed to wash loads containing dishes with normal amounts of food soils.
Water usage ranges from 3 to 6 gallons.
Light Wash Designed to wash loads containing dishes that are lightly soiled. Water usage is 5
gallons.
Quick Wash Designed for light food soils. The cycle ends with a rinse and does not include drying.
Water usage is 4 gallons.
Rinse Only Rinses dishes being held until the dishwasher is full, and another
cycle is selected. This cycle helps reduce the potential for development of odors.
Water usage is 2 gallons.

ToughScrub™ This option adds fills, heat and/or wash time to the
ToughScrub Plus™ wash cycle.
Sanitize This option monitors cycles for sanitization.
Extra Rinse This option adds an extra rinse to the cycle which helps in hard water situations.
160° Wash This option raises temperature in the final rinse to 160° F.
HeatedDry This optionimproves drying resultsbyturning the heatingelement on and offduring
the dry portion of the cycle.
Delay Delays the start of the dishwasher based on user input.
ControlLock Lock's the control touch pads from unwanted usage. This option does not lock the
door.

Display Description
Clean The "Clean" light illuminates at the end of the cycle and remains on until the door has
beenopen continuously for 30seconds.
Drying The "Drying" light illuminates until the cycle is complete.
Washing The "Wash" light illuminates through all the rinse and wash portions of the cycle.
HeatingDelay The "Heating Delay" light illuminates when the cycle is being extended to heat the
water.
Clean/Sanitized These two lights illuminate from the end of cycle until the next cycle is selected,
orthe door has been open continuously for 30 seconds.
Delay The "Delay" light will illuminate whenever a delay count down is in progress, or until
the "Delay" pad is pressed again.

Section 4. Electrical-Mechanical
Troubleshooting
Will Not Fill
Water Access Valve
Checkto determine if the valve is turnedon and water is
availableto theDishwasher.Check waterpressure.
Circuit Breaker/Fuse
Checkfor tripped breakeror blown fuse.Reset or replace
as necessary.
Door Latch
Check door switches for continuity. With door switches
engaged,no continuity, replace switch.
Float
Check float position. If in the up position, check for
obstructionor disengagement from the FloatSwitchArm.
Float Switch
If the float is in the down position, check the switch for
continuity. If no continuity, replace the Float Switch.
Water Valve
Check Solenoid for continuity. No continuity, replace
Water Valve. Check Inlet Screen for restrictions. Clean
screen or replace Water Valve as necessary. (See section
5).
Wiring/Electrical Connections
Checkfor loose orfrayedwire terminal connections.
Checkfor broken wirewithin harness. Repair or replace
as necessary.
NOTE: Lowwater pressure can resultinfailure of the
Water Valve to close properly.
Float
Ensure that the Float isn't stuck in the down position.
Checkfor sediment buildup. Clean and/orreplace as
necessary.
Float Switch Actuator Lever
Check the actuator lever on the bracket. It must be able
to move freely. Repair or replace as necessary. (See
section 5).
Float Switch
Check Float Switch for continuity with the Float in the up
position. If continuity is present and Float moves up and
downfreely, replace Float Switch.

disconnectingorremoving.
POOR WATER CIRCULATION
Water Level - Too Low
Normalwater fill should beat level depicted byarrows.
PumpAssembly
Checkassembly for obstructions orrestricted movement
of parts. Repair and/or replace parts as necessary.

Checkthat water continues toflowwhen electrical power
is turned off. If the water continues to flow without

between120 -150degrees Fahrenheit. Ifnot, advise
consumertoadjust water heater setting. Encourage
consumerto purge water linesto the dishwasher area
priorto starting the dishwasher.
CycleOptions
Adviseconsumer useof optionsavailable on dishwasher
thatimprove drying. Options thatimprove drying are
Heated Dry, and 160° Wash.
Detergent
Checkwater hardness. Instruct consumer ondetergent
usage,one teaspoonof detergent pergrain of water
hardness.
RinseDispenser
Checklevel of rinseaid in reservoir.Check dispenser
settingunder cap. Use "MAX"forhard water conditions.
Improper Rack Loading
Check how the consumer loads the dishes into the racks.
Improperloading of some typesof dishes can trap water
which causes dishes not to dry.
Heating Element
Check load readings listed on Technical Sheet located
behindToe Panel.

Thermostat
Check mating surface of the High Limit Thermostat face
to surface of tub enclosure. Contact area must be flat.
Adjust the thermostat placement if necessary. See
Technical Sheet, locatedbehindToe Panel forthermostat
data.
Water Leaks
Installation
CheckDishwasher forproper levelingand squarenessin
cabinet.
Door Alignment
Checkproper alignment ofDoor Liner to DoorGasket.
Door Gasket
Checkfor torn ordamaged Door Gasket.Repair or
replace as necessary.
Hoses
Check for loose hose clamps or hoses that leak. Tighten
hose clamps or replace hoses as needed.
Spray Arms / Manifold
Check for cracks and replace as necessary.

coil resistance. Replace Water Valve if needed. Also,
check incoming water supply line for proper size and
pressure. Make sure the supply line is secured.
Grinding
Check for objects in PumpAssembly. If objects are
found, inspect PumpAssembly for damage. Repair as
needed.
Vibration
Checkcomponentsfor source of vibration. Adjustand/or
tightenas needed.
Will Not Start Or Program
Control Board
Checkincoming voltagetoControl Board.
Membrane Switch
Checkfor properoperation of MembraneSwitch. See
membranereadings on theTechnical Sheet located
behindtoe panel.
NOTE: Makesure the pin connectors aremaking proper
contact with pins on the Control Board. If the
voltageiscorrect into the Control Board, and the

Thefollowing paragraphsdescribe howto disassemble
unit under test. Disassembly to some extent is required
toinstall unit, toperform troubleshooting procedures, and
toremove andreplace failedcomponents.
Componentnames usedthroughout disassembly
procedures are the same as those used in Parts
Manuals.
For quicker reassembly, disassemble unit under test only
to extent necessary to troubleshoot and repair. Unless
noted, reassembly is opposite of disassembly.
WARNING

Front Support and Toe Panel Removal
Removalof Front SupportandToe Panelwill allow access
to the Water Valve, Float Switch Assembly, Electrical
Junction Box, hoses, thermostats, Start Capacitor and
Motor/PumpAssembly.
Removal
1. Disconnect power to the machine.
2. The Front Support Panel is held by 2 screws, one
eachside. Remove bothscrews.
3. The Toe Panel is held by 2 screws, one each side.
To avoid risk ofpersonal injury or deathdue to
electrical shock, ground wires and wires colored like
ground wiresare NOT tobe used as current carrying
conductors.The standard acceptedcolor coding for
ground wires is green or green with a yellow
stripe.Electrical components such asthe water valve
andmotorare groundedthrough anindividual wire
attached to the electrical component. Ground wires
shouldnotbe removedfrom individualcomponents
while servicing, unless the component is to be
removedand replaced. It isextremely important to
replaceallremoved groundwires beforecompleting
service.
