TheMclntoshMA6400isanIntegratedAmplifierwith100wattsperchannel,combinedwith
afullfeaturedremotecontrolledPreamplifier.
TheMA6400includesthepopularMclntoshfeaturessuchasPOWERGUARD,DCoutput
protection,thermalprotectionandSentryMonitorprotectioncircuits.Frontpanelpowerguard
indicatorsareincludedforeachchannel.Largeilluminatedfrontpanelpowerlevelmetersread
thepoweroutputofeachchanneltoa highdegreeofaccuracy.
ThePreamplifiersectioncanaccommodatesevenhighlevelsignalsources,orsixhighlevel
andonemagneticphono.Allswitchingfunctionsareperformedwithdigitallogicintegrated
circuitsdrivingultrareliable,lowdistortionElectromagneticswitches.BassandTreblecontrols
aswellasanactiveLoudnesscontrolgivethelistenera widerangeofoptionstoshapethe
frequencyresponsetooptimumforanylistenerpreferences.Allthecircuitelementsforthese
controlsareremovedfromthecircuitpathwhenthecontrolsareintheirflatsettings.Rearpanel
signalprocessorconnectionscanbeswitchedinoroutofthecircuitwitha convenientswitch.
OtherfeaturesincludetwoTapeMonitorswitches,twoTapeCopyswitchesanda
Headphonejackforprivatelistening.TheMA6400canbemutedwiththeHandHeldRemote
Controller.RefertotheManualsectionTECHNICALDESCRIPTIONforfurthercircuitandfeature
information.
TheMA6400canbeinstalleduprightona tableorshelf,standingonitsownplasticfeet.It
canalsobecustominstalledinfurnitureorcabinetofyourchoice.Therequiredpanelcutout
andunitdimensionsareshownona pagenearthebackofthismanual.Alwaysprovide
adequateventilationforyourMA6400.Cooloperationinsuresthelongestpossibleoperatinglife
foranyelectronicinstrument.
Acustomcabinetinstallationshouldprovidethefollowingrecommendedminimumspacing
dimensionstoinsureadequateventilationandcooling.Allowatleast1-1/2inches(3.8cm)above
theunitsoairflowisnotobstructed.Allowatleast17-1/2inches(44.5cm)behindthemounting
panel,whichincludesclearanceforconnectors.Allow1-1/8inches(2.9cm)infrontofthe
mountingpanelforknobclearance.
In a custom cabinet Installation, It Is essential that the specified cutout be made In the
mounting shelf below the rear heat sink section of the MA6400 for adequate convection
cooling.

TheMA6400canberemotelycontrolled.Mostoftheoperatingfunctionsperformedat
thefrontpanel,alsocan bedonebytheMA6400HandHeldRemoteController.The
followingInformationrefersonlytothefrontpanel.Othersectionsofthismanualexplains
thefunctionsandoperationoftheMA6400HandHeldRemoteControllerandtherear
panelconnections.
Thelastpageofthismanualfoldsouttoshowdrawingsofthefrontandrearpanelsof
theMA6400.ThiswillhelpyouInIdentifyingandlocatingthefrontpanelcontrols,
switches,pushbuttonsandtherearpanelconnectorsandswitches.Thelettersand
numbersonthedrawingsrefertotheInformationthatfollows.
A.BASSANDTREBLE
Provides12dBboostandcut.withneutralflatresponseatthecenterdetentposition.The
BassandTreblecontrolsaffecttheSPEAKERS1 and2,MAINOUTPUTSandtheHEAD¬
PHONES.TheTAPE1 andTAPE2 OUTPUTSarenotaffectedbytheBassandTreblecontrols.
B.WATTSPOWEROUTPUT
TwoilluminatedWATTmetersareprovidedontheMA6400frontpanel.Themetersarepeak
respondingandtheircircuitsareconstantlyreadingtheoutputpowerrequiredbythemusical
information.
One additionalcalibrationmarkabove100wattsisonthemeters.Thismarkis200watts,
(+3dB).Theamplifiercannotproducea continuous200wattsofpower,butcanproducewell
above100wattsonprogrampeaks,especiallyintolowerimpedanceloads.
Theupperscaleonthemetersiscalibratedinaveragewattspower,andthelowerscalein
decibels.Themetercalibrationlinesreadingfromrighttoleft,startingatthe100wattindication
areasfollows.

BothchannelsoftheMA6400incorporatetheMclntoshPOWERGUARDcircuitwhich
preventsoutputclippingwithitsharshanddamagingdistortion.A frontpanelLEDPowerGuard
indicatorisprovidedforeachofthechannels.TheLEDlightswheneverthePowerGuardcircuit
isactivatedforthatchannel.Thisindicatesthattheamplifierisproducingitsmaximum
undistortedpoweroutput,andthatyouarebeingprotectedfromoverdriveandclipping.The
outputlevelwherePowerGuardactswillbewellabovetheratedpowerduetoconservative
Mclntoshdesignphilosophy.
(If the POWER GUARD indicators turn on and stay on continuously for either channel, it
indicates a problem is present. If this condition occurs, contact your Mclntosh dealer for

circuitcomponentsareremovedfromthesignalpath.Turnthecontrolclockwisetomodifythe
frequencyresponseinthecorrectproportionrequiredforsofterlisteninglevels.The
compensatedfrequencyresponseisnotaffectedbychangesinthevolumecontrolsettings.
FirstadjusttheVOLUMEControlforthedesiredlisteninglevel,thenadjusttheLOUDness
Controltothesettingyoupersonallyprefer.

rearpanelSWITCHEDACOutletturnsONandOFFwiththePOWERswitch.TheREDLED
abovethePOWERswitchstaysONcontinuouslywhenevertheMA6400isconnectedtoa live
ACoutlet.Thisisanindicationthatthebackuppowersupplyison.Thisallowsyoutoturnonthe
MA6400withtheHandHeldRemoteController.

surethatthespeakerplusandminus.(HotandCommon)terminalsareconnectedtothe

TheHOTandCOMMON( + and-)terminalsofbothpairsofspeakersmustbeconnected
inanidenticalmannertotheproperamplifieroutputterminalssothespeakerswilloperateIN
PHASE.Thismeansthatthespeakerdriversurfacesmovebackandforththesameineach
speakersystem.Almostallloudspeakersystemshavetheirhotandcommonterminalscolor
coded,withredusuallyashotorplusandblackascommonorminus.Theoutputsignalsofall
MclntoshpoweramplifiersarealwaysIN-PHASEwiththeinputsignals.
Usehighqualityspeakercablessincethisisanimportantlinkinyourstereosystem.
Selectionofthepropersizeandtype ofspeakercableisnecessaryforyoutoreceivethebest
possibleperformancefromyouramplifierandspeakercombination.ConsultyourMclntosh

Oneexampleofa needforthisfeaturewouldbeiftheMA6400wereinstalledbehinda
cabinetdoorthatwouldblockthefrontpanel IRsensor.
Anotheruseforthisfeatureistoplacea keypadorsensorintheremoteareawherea second
pairofloudspeakersisinstalled.Youcanselectprogramsourcesandcontrolvolumeinthe
remotearea.(Thesame program source and volume level will also bepresent inthe main
listening area loudspeakers if they are selected.)
