strumenttotheoriginalperformancelimits.TheSER-
VICECONTRACTdoesnotcoveranyshippingcoststo
andfromtheauthorizedserviceagencyorthefactory.
8.UnitsinoperationoutsidetheUnitedStatesand
CanadaarenotcoveredbytheMclntoshServiceCon-
tract,irrespectiveoftheplaceofpurchase.Norare
unitsacquiredoutsidetheU.S.A.andCanada,thepur-
chasersofwhichshouldconsultwiththeirdealerto
ascertainwhat,ifany,servicecontractorwarrantymay
beavailablelocally.

TheCompactDischasproventobea significantim-
provementinaudiotechnology.Byusingsophisticated
digitalandopticaltechnologies,theCompactDisc
deliversoutstandingsoundreproductionandgivesyou
operatingfeatureswhichhaveneverbeenseeninhome
entertainmentequipment.
IntheCompactDiscsystem,theoriginalsoundissampl-
ed,measuredandquantized(convertedtobinary
numbers).Itthusbecomesa pulsecodemodulated(PCM)
signalrepresentingtheoriginalsound,butbeforebeing
encodedondisc,itisspeciallyprocessedtokeepthe
soundpure,andtomakeplaybackeasyandconvenient.
Controlanddisplayinformationisaddedtoprovidefast
accessandprogrammingpossible.
SpecialEight-to-Fourteenmodulation(EFM)ensuresthat
amaximumofsoundinformationcanbepackedintothe
discwhichrequiresa minimumoferrorcorrection,pro-
videsvitaltiminginformation,andimprovestrackability.
Thetaskofthecompactdiscplayeristodecodetheen-
codeddata,useittocontroldrivemotorspeedandlaser
spottracking,correcterrors,derivethesoundinforma-
tion,andpresentitina waytosatisfythemostcritical
ears,yourears.Mclntoshhasthebestthought-outdesign
whichwillbringyouthehighestsatisfaction.

PLAYERLOCATION
TheMCD7000maybeinstalledina Mclntoshcabinet
orcustominstalledinfurnitureofyourchoice.Always
provideadequateventilation.Neverplaceitaboveheat
generatingcomponentssuchashighpoweredamplifiers.
Provide1½inches(3cm)ofspaceabovetheplayersoas
nottointerferewitha coolingairflow.Alwaysusethe
compactdiscplayerhorizontally,outofdirectsunlight
andawayfromotherheatsources.
REMOVETHETRANSITSCREWS
Onthebottomoftheplayeraretwoscrewswhichlock
theplayermechanismtoprotectitduringtransportation.
Removethesescrewsandkeepthemina safeplace.To
preventdamage,thesescrewsmustbereplacedifthe
playeristobetransported.
CUSTOMINSTALLATION
ThePANLOCsystemofinstallingequipmentconvenient-
lyandsecurely,isa productofMclntoshresearch.Turned
clockwise,thePANLOCbuttonsonthefrontpanellock
firmly inplace.A counterclockwiseturnofthePANLOC
buttonsunlocksthechassisfromitsmounting.
Toinstalltheinstrumentina Mclntoshcabinet,follow
theinstructionsthatareenclosedwiththecabinet.For
anyothertypeofinstallationfollowtheseinstructions:
1.UnpackfromCarton
OpenthecartonandremovethePANLOCbrackets,hard-
warepackage,andmountingtemplate.Removethein-
strumentfromitsplasticbagandplaceitupsidedownon
theshippingpallet.Unscrewthefourplasticfeetfromthe
bottomofthechassisandunscrewandremovethetransit
screws.Unlessthetransitscrewsareinplacewhenthein-
strumentistransported,damagecanoccur.Keepthetran-
sitscrewsina safeplace.
2.MarktheCabinetPanel.
Tapethemountingtemplateinpositiononthecabinet
panelwheretheinstrumentistobeinstalled.Thebroken
linesthatrepresenttheoutlineoftherectangularcutout
alsorepresenttheoutsidedimensionsofthechassis.
Makesuretheselinesclearshelves,partitions,orany
equipment.Withthetemplateinplace,firstmarkthesix
AandB holesandthefoursmallholesthatlocatethe
cornersofthecutout.Then,jointhefourcornermarkings
withpencillines,usingtheedgeofthetemplateasa
straightedge.
3.DrillHoles
Usea drillwitha 3/16inch(5mm)bitheldperpendicular
tothepanelanddrillthesixA andB holes.Then,usinga
drillbitslightlylargerthanthetipofyoursawblade,drill
oneholeateach oftwodiagonallyoppositecorners.The
holesshouldbarelytouchtheinsideedgeofthepenciled
outline.Beforetakingthenextstep,makesurethatthesix
AandB holeshavebeendrilled.
4.SawthePanelCutout
Sawcarefullyontheinsideofthepenciledlines.First
makethetwolongcutsandthenthetwoshortcuts.
Aftertherectangularopeninghasbeencutout,usea file
tosquarethecornersandsmoothanyirregularitiesinthe
cutedges.
5.InstalltheMountingStrips
Inthehardwarepackageyouwillfindtwomounting
strips,andtwosetsofmachinescrews.Forpanelsthat
arelessthan1/2inch(12.7mm)thick,usethe3/4inch
(19.1mm)screws;forpanelsthataremorethan1/2inch
(12.7mm)thick,usethe1-1/4inch(31.8mm)screws.
Startingattheright-handsideofthepanel,inserta
screwoftheproperlengthintothecenterholeinthe
panel,markedB onthetemplate.Onthebackofthe
panel,aligna mountingstripwiththeholesinthepanel
andtightenthescrewuntilthescrewheadispulledinto
thewood.
Repeatthisproceduretoattachthemountingstripto
theleftsideofthepanel.
6.AttachthePANLOCBrackets
UsingtwoscrewsoftheproperlengthintheA holeson
eachside,attachthePANLOCbracketstothecabinet
panel;theshortflangeismountedagainstthefront(face)
ofthecabinetpanel.Thescrewspassthroughthe
PANLOCbracketflange,thecabinetpanel,andthen
throughthemountingstripspreviouslymounted.
7.InstalltheInstrument
GuidetheACpowercordthroughthepanelopeningto
thebackofthecabinet;then,slidetheinstrumentinto
theopeningcarefullysothattherailsonthebottomof
eachsideofthechassisengagethetracksonthemoun-
tingbrackets.Continuetoslidetheinstrumentintothe
cabinetuntilthefrontpanelisflushwiththecabinet
panel.TurnthePANLOCbuttonsatthelowerleftand
rightcornersoftheinstrumentpanelclockwisetolock
theunitfirmlyinthecabinet.TurnthePANLOCbuttons
counterclockwisetounlocktheinstrument.Itcanthen
slideoutwardtopermittheremovaloftheinstrument
fromthecabinet.

AUDIOOUTPUTS
Foldoutthephotographontheinsideoftheback
cover.ItwillhelpyouinconnectingtheMCD7000to
yourstereo.
TheMCD7000hastwosetsofoutputjacks.Oneset,
FIXEDOUTPUT,isnotaffectedbythefrontpanelOUT-
PUTlevelcontrol.Theoutputoftheotherset,VARIABLE
LEVEL,canbeadjustedbytheOUTPUTLEVELcontrol.
UsetheFIXEDOUTPUTjackstofeedprogramtoa stereo
preamplifierorotherequipmentwithitsownvolumecon-
trol.
UsetheVARIABLEOUTPUTjackstoconnecttoa power
amplifierora taperecorderwherecontrolofthevolume
attheplayerisdesired.Thereisnodifferenceinthe
signalqualityateitherpairofoutputjacks.Bothpairsof
outputjacksmaybeusedsimultaneously.
Connecttheplayertothe"CD","AUX",orotherhigh
levelinputon thepreamplifier.Do notconnectto the
"PHONO"input.ConnecttheLeftplayeroutputtotheleft
preamplifierinput.ConnecttheRightplayeroutputtothe
rightpreamplifierinput.
ACPOWER
PlugtheACpowercordintoa 120volt50/60Hzrecep-
tacleattherearofthepreamplifierorintoa walloutlet.
INSERTINGTHEBATTERIESINTHE
REMOTECONTROL
YourMclntoshDigitalDiscPlayeriscompleteincluding
RemoteControl.Inyourhandyouhavetheabilitytocon-
trolallnormaloperatingfunctionsofthediscplayerwith
theexceptionoftheTIMEdisplay.Itcanonlybechanged
bythefrontpaneltouch-buttons.

teriesassoonastheyaredeadtopreventdamageby
possiblebatteryleakageorincasetheremotecontrolis

thecontrolisoperating.
PLAY:Touchtoclosethediscdrawerandtostart
play.Touchtoreturntothebeginningofthetrack

4.DISPLAYAREA:Anon/offindicatorthatpresentsin-
formationaboutthenumberoftracksonthedisc,
theplayingtime,theprogressofplayandparticular
functionsoftheplayer,anditsignalserrorsduring

5-6.REVANDFF:Touchandholdtoprovide
quickaccesstoa particularpassage.
7REPEAT:Touchtorepeatthediscora program.
8.PAUSE:Touchtointerruptandholdplayata chosen

LOAD
TouchtheLOADtouch-buttonandtheLOADlightil-
luminates.After1 secondthedrawerslidesout.Ifthe
drawerisobstructed,itwillnotcontinuetoopen.Should
thishappen,touchLOADtwiceinsuccessiontobringthe
drawerfullyout.
Withyourhandopen,andthumbandfingersextended,
holdthediscattherimandplaceitlabelsideup,inthe
discdrawer.
ClosethedrawerbytouchingPLAY,SCANorLOAD.
UsePLAYifyouwanttoplaythecompletedisc,SCANif
youfirstwanttopreviewthediscorchoosetracksfrom
it,andLOADifyouwanttoprogramthediscorifyou
wanttobeginplaywitha particulartrack.Ineachcase,
thedrawerslidesinwhenthebutton istouched.Ifthe
drawerisobstructedasitcloses,thedrawerwillcome
outagainafterabout3 seconds.
TheDAMAGEDDISC/MUTEindicatorremainslighteduntil
playbegins.Ifthelightremainsonandthediscrefusesto
play,makesurethatthediscisinthedrawerlabelsideup.
ToclosethedrawerwhenitisemptytouchtheLOAD
button.TheDAMAGEDDISC/MUTEsignwilllight.Topre-
venttheentryofdust,donotleavethedraweropen.
Openingthedrawerduringplay,willstopthedisc.
PLAY
Toplaythecompletedisc,closethedrawerbytouching
PLAY.Afterthecontentslistonthedischasbeenread,the
numberoftracksonthediscwillbedisplayedonthetrack
indicator.Thefirstbarofthetrackindicatorbecomes
brighterandthefirsttrackbeginstoplay.Whenplaybegins,
elapsedplayingtimeonthistrackisdisplayed.
Aseachtrackends,thebrightbarforthattrackgoesoff
andthenextbarbecomesbrighter.Meanwhile,thetime
betweentracksiscountedoff,followedbya displayof
theelapsedtimeplayedonthattrack.
Togobacktothebeginningofa trackwhileitisplay-
ing,touchPLAY.Thetrackisthenrepeatedfromthe
beginning.Whenallthetrackshavebeenplayed,allthe
barsofthetrackindicatorandtheDAMAGEDDISC/MUTE
indicatorwilllight.Allotherindicatorsturnoff.
SCAN
Thedrawerwillcloseandthefirst10secondsofeach
trackwillbeplayedwhentheSCANtouch-buttonisused
toinitiateplay.Aseachtrackisprevieweditsbaronthe
displayblinksonandoff.Barsfortracksthathavebeen
playedareoff.
Whenthebeginningsofalltrackshavebeenpreviewed,
theSCANsigngoesoff,andthelaserpick-upreturnsto
thebeginningofthefirsttrack,thefirstbaronthetrack
indicatorbecomesbrighterandthePAUSEsignlights.To
listentothedisc,startplaybytouchingPAUSE.The
PAUSEsignwillgooffandthediscwillplay.
Anytrackcanbeenteredinthememoryforlaterplay-
ingwhileusingSCANtopreviewthetracks.Foreach
wantedtrack,touchSTOREwhilethetrackisplaying.The
indicatorbarwillturnontoindicatethatthewantedtrack
isstoredinthememory.Theplayerwillimmediately
previewthenexttrack,theindicatorbarforthattrackwill
blinkonandoffandallothernon-storedindicatorbars
willturnoff.
Ifbeforeyouhavepreviewedalltracks,youdecideto
listentoalloftheremainingtracksonthedisc,touch
PLAY.TheSCANsignwillgooffandtheremainingtracks
willplayintheirentirety,beginningwiththetrackwhose
barwasblinking.
Whenalltrackshavebeenpreviewed,SCANwillgooff,
thestoredbarsaredisplayedwiththefirststoredbar
brighterandthePAUSEsignlights.Tolistentothestored
program,touch PAUSE. The PAUSE sign will gooffand
thediscwillplaythestoredtracksinthesequence
selected.
THE DISPLAY
Thedisplaypresentsmanydifferenttypesofinformation.
TRACKINDICATOR:AssoonasthePOWERbuttonis
touched,theplayerisswitchedonandthe20numbered
verticalbarsofthetrackindicatorlight.Thetrackin-
dicatorgoesoffagainwhentheACpowerisswitchedoff.
Whena dischasbeenplacedinthedrawer,itmaybe
closedbya touchoneithertheLOAD,PLAYorSCAN
touch-buttons.Themomentthediscdrawercloses.'00'
appearsontheleftofthedisplaytoshowthattheplayer
isreading thecontentslistencodedonthedisc.Afterthe
contentslisthasbeenread,thenumberofbarsthatre-
mainlightedonthetrackindicatorshowsthenumber of
tracksonthedisc,e.g.14fora discwith14tracks.The
brightbarindicatesthetrackbeingplayed.IftheLOAD
touch-buttonisusedtoclosethedrawer,thetotaltime
onthediscisdisplayed,thebarsforeachtrackonthe
disclightandbelowthenumbersforthetotaltime,the
wordsTIMEandTOTfortotalalsolight.
IfthePLAYtouch-buttonisusedtoclosethedrawerthe
displayshowsTIMERELativeandthetimeofthemusic
beingplayedfromthetrackwhosebarindicatoris
brighter.
IftheSCANtouch-buttonisusedtoclosethedrawer
thedisplayshowsTIMERELativeandtimeofthemusic
playedfromthetrackwhosebarindicatorisblinking.

TIME-TOTal:Atanytimethediscisplaying,touchthe
TIMEtouch-buttontodisplaythetotaltimeonthedisc.
Thisnumberremainsunchangedwhilethediscisinplay.
TIME-ABSolute:Toknowtheelapsedplayingtimeofall
tracksincludingthepausesencodedbetweentrackson
therecord,touchtheTIMEtouch-buttontwiceinsucces-
sionafterplayhasbegun.ThesignTIMEABSappears
undertheadvancingminutesandseconds.Toswitchback
torelative-time,touchtheTIMEtouch-buttona thirdtime.
TRACK:Atanytimethediscisplaying,touchtheTRACK
touch-buttontodisplaythenumberofthetrackbeing
played.Thetracknumberisshownontheleftofthe
displayandisthenumberbeforethepoint.Thedigits
afterthepointareindexnumbersandaredisplayedonly
whenthedischasthesenumbersencoded.Touchthe
TIMEtouch-buttonagaintoreturntothetimeindication.
Indexnumberscannotbeprogrammed,butarea useful
aidwhensearchingfora particularpassage.Onlythose
tracknumberswillbedisplayedthathavebeenprogram-
edwhenusingPROGRAMorPROGRAM
ERROR: Indicating an incorrect or inappropriate instruc-
tion,theredERRORsignlightsfora shorttime.
TouchingSCAN,PAUSE,andREPEATcausesthecor-
respondingsignsatthelowerrightofthedisplaytolight.
DAMAGEDDISC/MUTE:Ifthereisa faultwiththedisc,
theredlight"illuminates."
THEREMOTECONTROL
Whentheplayerisswitchedonandthediscisinthe
drawer,alltheplayerfunctionscanbeoperatedusingthe
remotecontrol,exceptTIME.
Theremotecontrolworksuptoa distanceofabout24
feet(8meters).Althoughtheplayercanreceivetheinfra-
redbeamalsoviareflection,werecommendaimingthe
remotecontroldirectlyattheREMOTEsensor.
NEXTTRACK
Toplaya latertrackonthedisc,touchNEXTTRACK.
Eachtouchmovesthelaserpenandthebrightbaronthe
trackindicatoronetrack.Allowa momentbetweeneach
touch.Playistemporarilyinterruptedwhilethelaserpick-
upmoves.
IfyoutouchNEXTTRACKduringplayofthelasttrack,
the ERROR sign will light asa reminder that there isno
nexttrack.Playofthelasttrackcontinues.
BACKTRACK
Toplayanearliertrackonthedisc,touchBACKTRACK.
Eachtouchmovesthelaserpenandthebrightbaronthe

Placingthediscinthedrawer,andclosingitusing
LOAD,permitsthelaserpentoread thecontentslistand
thendisplaythenumberofbarscorrespondingtothe
numberoftracksonthedisc.Thedisplayshowsthe
highesttracknumberthatcanbestored.Althoughthe
totalplayingtimeisdisplayed,itisnotimportantduring
programming.
Readtheprogramcontentsfromthelistprovidedwith
thedisc,thendecideonthetracksyouwanttoinclude
intheprogram.Foreachtrack,startthecorrecttrackin-
dicatorbarblinkingusingeitherPROGRAMor
PROGRAM.Whenthechosentrackbarisblinking,
touchSTORE.Ifyougopasttherequiredbar,goback
usingPROGRAM.

Whenplayinga programorsearchingfora particular
passage,REVorFFislimitedtothespacebe-
tweenthebeginningandendofthetrackbeingplayed.
Thelaserpick-upcannotbemovedoutsidetheselimitsto
preventmovingtoanothertrack,eitherprogrammedor
notprogrammed,whichwouldmodifytheprogram.
WheneitherlimitisreachedtheERRORsignlightsand
thelaserpick-upstopsuntilyoureleasetheREVor
FFtouch-button.
Toholdplayatthebeginningofa trackora passage,or
tointerrupttheprogram,touchPAUSE.Tobeginplay
again,touch PAUSE. It will resume atthe exact point it
wasinterrupted.ThePAUSEsignwillgooff.
Ifyouwanttorepeattheprogram,touchREPEAT.The
barsforallthestoredtracksremainlit,andtheonethatis
brighteristheoneforthetrackinplay.
Aprogramisretainedinthememoryuntilthelasttrack
hasbeenplayed.Thememoryisthencleared,andallthe
bars onthetrackindicatorlightevenlywhileallotherin-
dicatorsgooff.IfyouhavetouchedREPEAT,theprogram
remains inthe memory until the REPEAT, STOP or LOAD
buttonistouched.
IfyoutouchSTOPorLOADbeforetheendofa pro-

Discswithmorethan20trackscanbeplayedandall
playerfunctionsoperateduringthefirst20tracksonthe
disc.Afterthetwentieth,beginningatanyspecifictrack,
reviewingthedisc,orselectingtracksusingSCANdoes
notfunction.Youcanonlyusethesewiththefirst20
tracks.Theabilitytoprogramisalsolimitedtothefirst20
tracks.Tracksabove20cannotbestoredinthememory.
Thetrackindicatorworksnormallyforthefirst20tracks
andall20barswilllight.Asplayprogresses,thesegooff
successivelyexceptthetwentieth,whichremainslitata
lowerintensitywhenthetwentiethtrackhascompleted

showthatthereisstilla numberoftrackstofollow.The

discsbytheedge,andputthembackintheirprotective
casesimmediatelyafteruse.
Wipefingerprints,dustordirtoffwiththesoft,lint-free
clothprovidedwithyourplayer.Wipeina straightline
fromcentertoedge.Youcanbreatheonthediscfirstif
necessary.Cleaningagentsforconventionalrecords,
detergentorabrasivecleanersmustneverbeused.
Neverwriteonthelabelsideofthedisc.Writingwill
embossthediscanddestroythedigitaldata.Ifyoufollow
thesesuggestions,theCompactDiscwillprovidea
lifetimeofpurelisteningenjoyment.

Theplayermechanismhasself-lubricatingbearings,and
mustnotbeoiledorgreased.Thediscdrawershouldbe
