notcovered,andthesepurchasersshouldconsultwith

PLAYERLOCATION
TheMCD7005maybeinstalledina Mclntosh
cabinetorcustominstalledinfurnitureofyourchoice.
Alwaysprovideadequateventilation.Neverplaceit
aboveheatgeneratingcomponentssuchashigh
poweredamplifiers.Provide1½inches(3cm)ofspace
abovetheplayersoasnottointerferewitha coolingair
flow.Alwaysusethecompactdiscplayerhorizontally,
outofdirectsunlightandawayfromotherheatsources.
REMOVETHETRANSITSCREWS
Onthebottomoftheplayeraretwoscrewswhich
locktheplayermechanismtoprotectitduringtranspor-
tation.Removethesescrewsandkeepthemina safe
place.Topreventdamage,thesescrewsmustbereplac-
ediftheplayeristobetransported.
CUSTOMINSTALLATION
ThePANLOCsystemofinstalling equipmentconve-
nientlyandsecurely,isa productofMclntoshresearch.
Turnedclockwise,thePANLOCbuttonsonthefront
panellockfirmlyinplace.A counterclockwiseturnof
thePANLOCbuttonsunlocksthechassisfromitsmoun-
ting.
Toinstalltheinstrumentina Mclntosh cabinet,follow
theinstructionsthatareenclosedwiththecabinet.For
anyothertypeofinstallationfollowtheseinstructions:
1.UnpackfromCarton
OpenthecartonandremovethePANLOCbrackets,
hardwarepackage,andmountingtemplate.Removethe
instrumentfromitsplasticbagandplaceitupsidedown
ontheshippingpallet.Unscrewthefourplasticfeet
fromthebottomofthechassisandunscrewand
removethetransitscrews.Unlessthetransitscrewsare
inplacewhentheinstrumentistransported,damage
canoccur.Keepthetransitscrewsina safeplace.
2.MarktheCabinetPanel.
Tapethemountingtemplateinpositiononthecabinet
panelwheretheinstrumentistobeinstalled.The
brokenlinesthatrepresenttheoutlineoftherec-
tangularcutoutalsorepresenttheoutsidedimensionsof
thechassis.Makesuretheselinesclearshelves,parti-
tions,oranyequipment.Withthetemplateinplace,
firstmarkthesixA andB holesandthefoursmallholes
thatlocatethecornersofthecutout.Then,jointhefour
cornermarkingswithpencillines,usingtheedgeofthe
templateasa straightedge.
3.DrillHoles
Usea drillwitha 3/16inch(5mm)bitheldperpen-
diculartothepanelanddrillthesixA and8 holes.
Then,usinga drillbitslightlylargerthanthetipofyour
sawblade,drilloneholeateachoftwodiagonallyop-
positecorners.Theholesshouldbarelytouchtheinside
edgeofthepenciledoutline.Beforetakingthenext
step,makesurethatthesixA andB holeshavebeen
drilled.
4.SawthePanelCutout
Sawcarefullyontheinsideofthepenciledlines.First
makethetwolongcutsandthenthetwoshortcuts.
Aftertherectangularopeninghasbeencutout,usea
file tosquarethecornersandsmoothanyirregularities
inthecutedges.
5.InstalltheMountingStrips
Inthehardwarepackageyouwillfindtwo mounting
strips,andtwosetsofmachinescrews.Forpanelsthat
arelessthan1/2inch(12.7mm)thick,usethe3/4inch
(19.1mm)screws;forpanelsthataremorethan1/2
inch(12.7mm)thick,usethe1-1/4inch(31.8mm)
screws.
Startingattheright-handsideofthepanel,inserta
screwoftheproperlengthintothecenterholeinthe
panel,markedB onthetemplate.Onthebackofthe
panel,aligna mountingstripwiththeholesinthepanel
andtightenthescrewuntilthescrewheadispulledinto
thewood.
Repeatthisproceduretoattachthemountingstripto
theleftsideofthepanel.
INSTALLATION

6.AttachthePANLOCBrackets
UsingtwoscrewsoftheproperlengthintheA holeson
eachside,attachthePANLOCbracketstothecabinet
panel;theshortflangeismountedagainstthefront
(face)ofthecabinetpanel.Thescrewspassthroughthe
PANLOCbracketflange,thecabinetpanel,andthen
throughthemountingstripspreviouslymounted.
7.InstalltheInstrument
GuidetheACpowercordthroughthepanelopeningto
thebackofthecabinet;then,slidetheinstrumentinto
theopeningcarefullysothattherailsonthebottomof
eachsideofthechassisengagethetracksonthemoun-
tingbrackets.Continuetoslidetheinstrumentintothe
cabinetuntilthefrontpanelisflushwiththecabinet
panel.TurnthePANLOCbuttonsatthelower leftand
rightcornersoftheinstrumentpanelclockwisetolock
theunitfirmlyinthecabinet.TurnthePANLOCbuttons
counterclockwisetounlocktheinstrument.Itcanthen
slideoutwardtopermittheremovaloftheinstrument
fromthecabinet.

Thebackcoverfoldsouttoshowphotographsofthe
frontandrearpanelsoftheMCD7005.Folditoutto
assistyouinidentifyingandlocatingthecontrols.The
lettersrefertotheparagraphsthatfollow.
ThebackpaneloftheMCD7005hasconnectorslabel-
edFIXEDOUTPUT,VARIABLEOUTPUT,REMOTE,a
portmarkedDIGITALOUTPUTandtheACpower
cord.TheVARIABLEOUTPUTisadjustedbythefront
panelVOLUMEtouchbuttonswhiletheFIXED
OUTPUTisunaffectedbythesecontrols.
Useshieldedcablestoconnecttheoutputsignaltoa
preamplifierorpoweramplifier.Tominimizethe
possibilityofhum,theshieldedcablesshouldbeof
parallelconstructionorlooselytwistedtogetherand
locatedawayfromthespeakerconnectingcablesand
ACpowercords.Becertaintousegoodqualityshield-
edcablesforallinterconnections.Yourdealercanad-
viseyouonthekindandlengthofcablesthatwillbest
suit yourinstallation.
FIXEDOUTPUT
TheFIXEDOUTPUTjacksareusedtofeedprogram
toa stereopreamplifierorotherequipmentwithits
ownvolumecontrol.
B.VARIABLEOUTPUT
UsetheVARIABLEOUTPUTjackstoconnecttoa
poweramplifierora taperecorderwherecontrolof
thevolumeattheplayerisdesired.Thereisnodif-
ferenceinthesignalqualityateitherpairofoutput
jacks.Bothpairsofoutputjacksmaybeused
simultaneously.
Connecttheaudiooutputoftheplayertothe
"CD","AUX",orotherhighlevelinputonthe
preamplifier.Donotconnecttothe"PHONO"in-
put.ConnecttheRightplayeroutputtotheright
preamplifierinputandtheLeftplayeroutputtothe
leftpreamplifierinput.
C.REMOTE
TheREMOTEcontrolconnectorisdesignedfor
usewiththeMclntoshmulti-areainfraredremote
controlsystems.Withthesesystems,youcan,from
ahand-heldremotecontrol,operatethediscplayer
andtheentiresystemfromvariouslisteningareas.
D.DIGITALOUTPUT
Thedigitaldatastreamisavailablefromthisportfor
useinsystemsthatcanacceptdigitaldatadirectly.
E.ACPOWER

havetheabilitytocontrolnormaloperatingfunctionsof
thediscplayer.
TheremotecontrolrunsontwoAA,1.5Voltbat-
teries.Slideopenthecoveronthebackoftheremote
controlandinsertthebatteriesasshowninthediagram
inthebatterycompartment,thenslidethecoverclosed
again.
Batterylifeisnormallyaboutoneyear.Removethe
batteriesas soonas theyaredeadto preventdamageby
possiblebatteryleakage.Thebatteriesshouldberemov-
ed,aswell,shouldtheremotecontrolnotbeusedfora
lengthoftime.
HOWTOCONNECT

Thebackcoverfoldsouttoshowphotographsof
thefrontandrearpanelsoftheMCD7005.Folditout
toassistyouinlocatingtheconnectors.Thenumbers
refertotheparagraphsthatfollow.
TheglassupperhalfoftheMCD7005frontpanel
containstheCDdrawer,theIRREMOTESENSOR,the
REMOTEresponseLED,theDAMAGEDDISCindicator
andthemessagecenter.Inthemessagecenterare
displayedthecurrentstatusofthemodeofoperation,
time,theCDfunctionsinuseandthehorizontally
displayedvolumelevelindicator.
Theblackanodizedlowerhalfofthefrontpanelcon-
tainsthetouch-buttonsandcontrolstoprogramthe
player,setintoactionthevariousplayerfunctions,con-
troltheVOLUME,a headphonejackwithitsown
volumecontrolandPANLOCloadingbuttons.
BeforeoperatingyourCompactDiscplayer,
familiarizeyourselfwiththecontrolsandwhattheydo.

TouchtoswitchtheACpowertotheplayeronor
off.
2.LOAD
Touchtoopenorclosethediscdrawer.AnLED
abovetheLOADtouch-buttonilluminateswhenthe
drawerisoperating.
3.PLAY
Touchtoclosethediscdrawerandtostartplay.
Touchtoreturntothebeginningofthetrackbeing
played.
4.VOLUME
VolumemaybeadjustedbyusingtheVOLUMEA
orY onthefrontpanelorontheremotecontrol.
Adjustmentofthevolumeisperformedbyanelec-
tronicallyswitched,precision,ladderattenuator.The
Mclntoshelectronicprecisionladderattenuatorad-
justsvolumebyC2MOStransistorswitcheswhich
selecttherightcombinationsofhighlyaccurate
depositsofresistivematerialforthevolumeprogram-
med.Theentirerangeofvolumeadjustmentis66dB
in2 dBincrements.Leftandrighttrackingiscontroll-
edtoa fractionofa dB.Becausetherearen'tany
movingparts,thevolumeadjustmentcannot
generatenoiseormisalignment.Unlikeordinaryelec-
tronicvolumecontrols,theMclntoshprecisionladder
attenuatorsupportsthedistortion-free,low-noiseper-
formanceoftheMCD7005.

Anon/offindicatorthatpresentsinformationabout
thenumberoftracksonthedisc,theplayingtime,
theprogressofplayandparticularfunctionsofthe
player,anditsignalserrorsduringoperationorpro

thedrawerfullyout.
Holdthediscattherimandplaceitlabelsideup,in
thediscdrawer.
ClosethedrawerbytouchingPLAY,SCANorLOAD.
UsePLAYifyouwanttoplaythecompletedisc,SCAN
ifyoufirstwanttoprevieweachtrackonthediscor
storetracksfromit,andLOADifyouwanttoprogram
thedisc.Ineachcase,thedrawerslidesinwhenthe
buttonistouched.Ifthedrawerisobstructedasit
closes,thedrawerwillcomeoutagainafterabout3
seconds.
UsingLOADtoclosethedrawer,permitsthelaser
pentoreadthecontentslistandthendisplaythe
numberoftracksandthetotaltimeencodedonthe
disc.Afterreadingthecontentslist,theMCD7005swit-
chestostand-bymodereadyforfurtherinstructions.
TheDAMAGEDDISC/MUTEindicatorremainslighted
untilplaybegins.Ifthelightremainsonandthedisc
refusestoplay,makesurethatthediscisproperlyin
thedrawerandlabelsideisup.
Toclosethedrawerwhenitisemptytouchthe

Togobacktothebeginningofa trackwhileitisplay-
ing,touchPLAY.Thetrackisthenrepeatedfromthe
beginning.Whenallthetrackshavebeenplayed,the
trackindicator,thetotalelapsedtimeandtheDAMAG-
EDDISC/MUTEindicatorwilllight.Allindicatorsexcept
thevolumedisplayturnoff.

VolumemaybeadjustedbyusingtheVOLUMEor
VOLUMEonthefrontpanelorontheremotecon-
trol.Adjustmentofthevolumeisperformedbyanelec-
tronicallyswitchedprecisionladderattenuator.
TheMclntoshelectronicprecisionladderattenuator
adjustsvolumebyC2MOStransistorswitchesthatselect
therightcombinationsofhighlyaccuratedepositsof
resistivematerialforthevolumeprogrammed.
Theentirerangeofvolumeadjustmentis66dBin2
dBincrements.Leftandrighttrackingiscontrolledtoa
fractionofa dB.Becausetherearen'tanymovingparts,
thevolumeadjustmentcannotgeneratenoiseor
misalignment.Unlikeordinaryelectronicvolumecon-
trols,theMclntoshprecisionladderattenuatorsupports
thedistortion-free,low-noiseperformanceoftheMCD
7005.
TheVOLUMEindicatorinthemessagecenterisa 10
segmentdisplay.Asvolumeisincreased,more
segmentsarelightedtoindicaterelativevolume.
SCAN-16.
Thefirst10secondsofeachtrackwillbeplayed
whentheSCANtouch-buttonisusedtoinitiateplay.As
eachtrackispreviewedtheSCANindicator,theTRACK
numberandtheeLAPsedTIMEisdisplayed.
Whenthetrackshavebeenpreviewed,theSCANin-
dicatorturnsoff,thelaserpick-upreturnstothebeginn-
ingofthefirsttrack,thetotalnumberoftracksandthe
totaltimewillbedisplayedinthemessagecenter.
If,beforeyouhavepreviewedalltracks,youdecide
tolistentoalloftheremainingtracksonthedisc,touch
PLAY. The SCAN indicator will gooffandthe remaining
trackswillplayintheirentirety,beginningwiththe
trackindicatedinthemessagecenter.
Anytrackcanbeenteredinthememoryforlater
playingwhileusingSCAN.Foreachwantedtrack,
touchSTOREwhilethetrackisplayingandtheTRACK
willbeinsertedinthememory.Theplayerwillpreview
thenexttrackandtheindicatorforthattrackwillbe
displayed.
Whenalltrackshavebeenpreviewed,SCANwillgo
off.Tolistentothestoredprogram,touchPLAYAnd
thediscwillplaythestoredtracksinthesequence
selected.
