INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
LIGHTS AND CHIMES
Check engine
Yo r vehicle is eq ipped with a
comp ter that monitors the
engine's emission control system.
This system is commonly known as
the On Board Diagnostics System
(OBD II). This OBD II system
protects the environment by
ens ring that yo r vehicle
contin es to meet government
emission standards. The OBD II
system also assists the service
technician in properly servicing
yo r vehicle.

The chec engine" indicator light
illuminates when the ignition is first
turned to the  position to chec
the bulb. If it comes on after the
engine is started, one of the
engine's emission control systems
may be malfunctioning. The light
may illuminate without a
driveability concern being noted.
The vehicle will usually be drivable
and will not require towing.
What you should do if the check
engine light illuminates
   
This means that the OBD II system
has detected a malfunction.
Temporary malfunctions may cause
your chec engine" light to
illuminate. Examples are:
1. The vehicle has run out of fuel.
(The engine may misfire or run
poorly).
2. Poor fuel quality or water in the
fuel.
3. The fuel cap may not have been
properly installed and securely
tightened.
These temporary malfunctions can
be corrected by filling the fuel tan
with good quality fuel and/or
properly installing and securely
tightening the gas cap. After three
drive cycles without these or any
other temporary malfunctions
present, the chec engine" light
should turn off. (A driving cycle
consists of a cold engine startup
followed by mixed city/highway
driving). No additional vehicle
service is required.

If the check engine" light remains
on, have your vehicle serviced at
the first available opportunity.
  
Engine misfire is occurring hich
could damage your catalytic
converter. You should drive in a
moderate fashion (avoid heavy
acceleration and deceleration) and
have your vehicle serviced at the
first available opportunity.
Under engine misfire
conditions, excessive
exhaust temperatures could
damage the catalytic converter,
the fuel system, interior floor
coverings or other vehicle
components, possibly causing a
fire.

Charging system
Illuminate when the ignition i
turned on and the engine i off. The
light al o illuminate when the
battery i not charging properly and
the vehicle may require electrical
y tem ervice.
Engine
oil pressure
Illuminate when the ignition i
turned on and the engine i off. The
light al o illuminate when engine
oil pre ure fall below the normal
range. Refer to the Maintenance
and care chapter to check the
engine oil level a oon a po ible.
If the engine oil level i correct and
the light remain illuminated, do
not tart the engine. See your
dealer or a qualified ervice
technician.
Brake
system warning
Extingui he when the parking
brake i relea ed. Illuminate after
relea ing the parking brake to
indicate low brake fluid level or
that the Electronic Brake
Di tribution y tem (part of the
ABS) require ervice. The vehicle
i equipped with one of two light ,
depending on the market.

Testing the warning and
indicator lights
Turn the ignition key to the on
po ition without tarting the
engine. The following warning and
indicator light hould illuminate:
charging y tem, afety belt (doe
not illuminate, if the driver' afety
belt i fa tened), low coolant,
engine oil pre ure, check engine,
air bag readine , traction control,
brake y tem and ABS. The
overhead warning light (if
equipped) hould al o illuminate
briefly.
If any of the e light do not
illuminate, ee your dealer or
qualified ervice technician.

Headlamps on warning chime
So nds when the headlamps are on,
the ignition is off (and the key is
not in the ignition) and the driver's
door is open.
Key-in-ignition warning chime
So nds when the key is left in the
off/lock or accessory position and
the driver's door is open.
Safety belt warning chime
For information on the safety belt
warning chime, refer to the Seating
and safety restraints chapter.
Liftgate
ajar warning chime
(if equipped)
So nds when the ignition is in the
on position and the liftgate is ajar
or open. The interior dome lamp
will also ill minate.

Danger of ice warning
Illu inates when 0ºC (32ºF) and
below. The red sign warns of an
increased danger of icy roads.
The absence of a light in cold
te peratures does not necessarily
ean that there is no risk of ice on
the road. Caution should be
exercised when weather conditions
indicate that ice ay be present.
Even if the air te perature rises to
above +4_C (39_F) it is no
guarantee that the road is free of
ice.
Brake pad wear warning
Indicates that the pads of the front
or rear disc brakes ay be worn.
Have the brake pads checked
i ediately and replaced if
necessary.
Washer fluid warning
Indicates that the washer fluid
reservoir is low. Refill as soon as
possible. If a valid signal is
received, the light will re ain on
until the ignition is cycled.
Door
ajar
Illu inates when the ignition is
switched on and any door or
liftgate is open.
Bulb
failure
Indicates the failure of an exterior
bulb. The light stays illu inated
until the brake pedal is depressed
after starting the engine.
