developmentofelectronics,especiallyintheareaof communications,has
saturatedourenvironment
with
electromagnetic(radio)wavesthatareemitted
bytelevision,radioandcommunicationsignals.
These
EMwavesareinvisible
andtheirstrengthincreasesasoneapproachesthesource.Allelectrical
conductorsactasantennastotheEMsignalsand,tovaryingdegrees,allpower
wheelchairsandscootersaresusceptibletoelectromagneticinterference
(EMI).
Thisinterferencecouldresultinabnormal,unintentionalmovementand/orerratic
control
ofthevehicle.TheUnitedStates
Food
and
Drug
Administration(FDA)
suggeststhatthefollowingstatementbeincorporatedtotheuser'smanualforall
electhc
scooters:
Poweredwheelchairsandelectricscooters(inthis
text,
both
will
bereferredtoas
poweredwheelchairs)maybesusceptibletoelectromagneticinterference
(EMI),
which
is interferingelectromagneticenergyemittedfromsourcessuchasradio
stations,
TVstations,amateurradio(HAM)transmitters,two-wayradiosand
cellular
phones.Theinterference(fromradiowavesources)cancausethe
poweredwheelchairtoreleaseitsbrakes,
move
by
itself
or
move
inunintended
directions.
Itcanalsopermanently
damage
thepoweredwheelchair'scontrol
system.TheintensityoftheEMenergycanbemeasuredinvoltspermeter
(V/m).
Each
poweredwheelchaircanresistEMIuptoa certainintensity.Thisis
called
the"immunitylevel."Thehighertheimmunitylevel,thegreaterthe
protection.
Atthistime,currenttechnologyiscapableofprovidingatleast20V/m
ofimmunitylevelwhichwouldprovideusefulprotectionagainstcommonsources
ofradiatedEMI.
Followingthewarningslistedbelowshouldreducethechanceofunintended
brakereleaseorpoweredwheelchairmovementthatcouldresultinserious
injury:
1)Donotturnonhand-heldpersonalcommunicationdevicessuchascitizens
band
(CB)radiosandcellular
phones
whilethepoweredwheelchairis turned
on.
2)BeawareofnearbytransmitterssuchasradioorTVstationsandtrytoavoid
comingclosetothem.

3)
If
unintendedmovement
or
brakereleaseoccurs,turnthepoweredwheelchair
off
as
soon
as
it
is
safe.
4)
Be
awarethataddingaccessories
or
components,
or
modifyingthepowered
wheelchair,
may
makeitmoresusceptibletointerferencefromradiowave
sources.(Note:there
isno
easywaytoevaluatetheireffect
on
theoverall
immunity
of
thepoweredwheelchair).
5)Reportallincidents
of
unintendedmovement
or
brakereleasetothepowered
wheelchair
manufacturer,
and
notewhetherthere
is a
radiowavesource
nearby.

powerwheelchairs,askingthem

test
theirnewproductsto

suretheyprovide

The
letter
saysthatpoweredwheelchairshouldhave
an
immunity
level
ofat
least
20
V/m,whichprovide
a
reasonabledegree
of

EMI.

Brakes
and
Throttle
controllever:
Whenever
thespeedleveris pushed,
the
electromagneticbrake
will
automaticallyreleaseandyourscooter
will
move.
When
thespeedlever
is
released,it
will
returntotheneutralposition
andthescooter
will
decelerateandcometo
a
completestop.Theparking
brake
will
then
engage
preventingfurthermovement
of
yourscooter.
Yourunit
is
equipped
with
a
programmablecontrollerthathas
a
highpeddle
disablesafetyfeature.This
will
preventunexpectedacceleration
of
the
scooter,
if
thespeedlever
is
being
pushed
atthe
same
timeyouturnthekey
"ON".
To
resetthecontroller,releasethespeed
engage
leverandturnthe
key
"OFF"
for
a
couple
of
secondsandthenturnitbake"ON".

The
tiller
angleadjustmentallowsyoutopositionthedashcloseror
further
awayfromyoubetteraccessofthecontrols.

Locatetheangleadjustingleverwhereislocatedontheinsidecenter
ofthe
tiller
boot.
•
Holdtheweightof the
tiller
with
onhandandloosenthelever
by
pulling
upthelever
with
theotherhand.Pushingdown
will
release
the
tiller
lockingmechanism,allowingyoutomovethe
tiller
freely.

Releasetheleverandtrytomovethe
tiller
backandforthslightly
allowing
thelevertolockintoposition.

free-wheelmode:
Yourscooterfeatures
a
"freewheel"mode
for
manualoperation.
To
activatemanually,turnthekeyswitch
OFF
andlocatethe
free-wheelleverattheback,rightside
of
thescooter,neartheseat.Pullleverto
the
"UP"
position
to
disengagethebrake
and
allowthescooter
tobe
pushed
freely.
Push
thelevertothe
"DOWN"
positiontoreengagethebrake.
Remember,
whenthescooteris inmanualfree-wheelmode,you
will
have
no
brakes.You
will
beunable
to
operatethescooter.

youwish
to
pushyourscooter

short
distance,
youmayputitintoManual
Free-Wheel
mode.
