1. INTRODUCTION
The IS1000 is a radio frequency bar code reader designed for the logistics, transportation,
manufacturing and retail sectors.
The IS1000 includes a laser reader and a radio base providing the interface with the host or
fixed terminal.
Many communication interfaces are supported, including RS232, Keyboard-Wedge, OCIA,
RS485 on Point-of-Sale (P.O.S.) terminals, and USB.

2. DESCRIPTION
The IS1000 is supplied as a kit and includes:
•Laser reader and wrist strap
•Radio base
•Battery charger and 5V power supply unit
•Holster and hardware
•The document First Installation and Quick and Easy Set-up Bar Code Menu.
2.1. Laser Reader
The IS1000 laser reader is available in standard and long range versions.

2.2. Radio Base
The radio base is available in standard version and industrial version (IP65) for installation
on a vehicle.
It is supplied by a 12 V power supply unit or by the terminal to which it is connected via the
DB25 connector.
The power supply unit is available in European and U.K. versions.
2.3. Battery Charger
The battery charger is provided with a 5V power supply unit designed for connection to the
mains power supply.
The power supply unit is available in European and UK version.
The battery charger must not be fixed in vertical or horizontal position.
For use in fixed position, use only the battery charger mounting plate.

2.4. Connecting Cables
The connecting cable differs according to the type of interface (RS232, Keyboard-Wedge,
OCIA, RS485, USB, etc.) and the type of connection (connection to a PC, a P.O.S. (Point
Of Sale) terminal, an IBM 46xx terminal, a notebook).

2.5.1. Holster
The holster fits on the belt or a support (wall, panel, etc.).
It is supplied as a standard accessory.

3. PHYSICAL INSTALLATION
3.1. Installing the Radio Base on a Support
The radio base can be installed on a support, such as a table, etc.
3.2. Installing the Battery Charger on a Support
The battery charger must be installed on the dedicated mounting plate (see page 6) or left
free. It must not be installed on a vertical or horizontal support.
The battery charger must not be fixed in vertical or horizontal position.
For use in fixed position, use only the battery charger mounting plate.

4. SETTING UP
Proceed as follows to set up the IS1000:
•Charge the laser reader battery
•Connect the radio base to the host or terminal by a special cable corresponding to the type of
interface selected (the terminal must be turned off before connection)
•Turn on the terminal
•If necessary, connect the radio base to the mains power supply by its power supply unit
•Set up the communication between the laser reader and radio base
•Configure the communication mode
•Configure the symbologies
4.1. Charging the Battery
Connect the laser reader to the charger as shown below (read window facing upwards).
Plug the power supply unit to the mains power supply.
The red charge LED (visible through the window) lights up and remains lit when charging.
The LED flashes when the charge is complete.
A full charge lasts approximately 3 hours.
Do not charge the laser reader after exposing it to very low or high temperatures.
It is recommended to charge the laser reader at an ambient temperature of between 0°C
and 45° C.

4.2. Connecting the Radio Base to the Host
Each type of connection requires a different cable.
The cable part numbers are given in:

•The booklet IS1000 First Installation and Quick and Easy Set-up Bar Code Menu,
for.the most common connections

4.2.2. Connection Procedure
The connections must always be made with the equipment turned off (radio
base and terminal).
The radio base power supply is provided by:
- The terminal by the cable connecting it to the radio base, via the DB25
connector, or
- Externally by a 12 V power supply unit connected to the mains power supply.
•Connect the cable to the terminal and to the DB25 connector on the radio base
•Turn on the terminal, which automatically turns on the radio base, when the
radio base power supply is via the DB25 connector
•If the radio base uses external power supply unit, connect it to the mains power
supply which automatically turns on the radio base.
•When the radio base is turned on, its red LED lights up and 6 beeps are emitted.
4.3. Linking the Laser Reader to the Radio Base
The first time the IS1000 is used, initialize the communication between the laser reader
and its radio base.
This is done by scanning the radio base ID bar code, located on the top of the base with
the laser reader.
Scanning of the label identifies the laser reader to the radio base and enables
communication.
The laser reader cannot read the radio base ID bar code if a parameter setting procedure
is in progress. To exit from configuration mode, read the code End of Configuration.

4.4. Programming the Communication Mode
Several communication modes are possible:
•RS232 (default mode)
•Keyboard-Wedge
•OCIA
•RS485
•USB interface
The most commonly used communication modes are listed in the IS1000 First Installation
and Quick and Easy Set-up Bar Code Menu.
The other modes are described in the IS1000 Configuration Guide.
Depending on the communication interface (other than RS232), it is mandatory to know
the connection number (ID) corresponding to your application.
This connection ID depends on the interface and hardware used.
It is given in the IS1000 Connection List.
