1. Safety
Knowledge of the operating instructions is a prerequisite for equipment operation.
1.1 Symbols Used
The following symbols are used in the instruction manual.

The measuring system is designed for use in industry and satisfies the requirements.
1.4 Proper Use
-The CSP2008 is designed for industrial use in automated manufacturing and machine
monitoring. It is used for

-The system should only be used in such a way that in case of malfunction or failure

2.1 Functional Principle
The CSP2008 Universal Controller is used for processing at least 2, maximum 6 digital or
analog input signals (2x internal + 4x external via EtherCAT modules from the Beckhoff
company). EtherCAT is also possible as external interface for the connection of further
sensors and further I/O modules. The universal controller CSP2008 is the EtherCAT mas-
ter and can not communicate with other EtherCAT masters e.g. such as in a PLC.

The CSP2008 controller is installed in a stable plastic case similar to a control panel
which can easily be attached to a DIN rail TS35 using a clamp on the rear side.
Two digital sensors can be directly connected to the controller via RS422 or EtherCAT. A
sensor can be directly connected to the EtherCAT connector on CSP2008 via EtherCAT.
Four other digital sensors can be connected to two RS422 extension terminals or two
EtherCAT junctions (EK1122) or via a RS422 extension terminal and an EtherCAT junc-
tion (EK1122) plus bus coupler by EtherCAT.
The parameterization of all inputs and outputs on the controller is performed via buttons
and the display or using a Web interface.
The controller calculates various input signals. All input signals in the input are scaled
on an internal number basis with a resolution of 1 nm and a maximum size of ±2.1 m for
this. In this way, the resolution and the scaling of the input variables for internal calcula-
tion does not have to be observed. A sensor change (or change of measuring range)
does not influence the internal calculation.
An internal time base also enables the calculation of measurement results of different
sensor types with various measuring frequencies.

2.2 Controls and Display Elements
2.2.1 Keyboard
The Universal Controller has a small keypad with four membrane keys. The Universal
Controller and the connected sensors can be programmed with this in the Settings
mode.

Mode Measurement:You change the display layout with the arrow keys in the measure-
ment mode. Depending on the layout, many different measured values can be displayed
simultaneously. The operating menu is called by pressing the button " " .
Mode Settings:In the menu mode, the arrow keys are used for the selection of the
values shown on the display (scrolling). Clicking the button " " saves the current selec-
tion. Using the ESC key, you return to the previous menu level or return to the mode
Measurement.
The following applies for editing numbers:
-Press the button " ". The cursor moves to the first position
-Edit this digit using the arrow keys (Up, Down).
-Move one position to the right: Press the button " ".
-Move one position to the left: Press the "ESC" key.
-The decimal point is fixed, i.e. smaller numbers must start with zeroes.
-The leading sign is reached with the "ESC" key; change with the arrow keys.
-After adjusting the last position, the number can be saved using "OK" (with the arrow
keys) and the button " " .
-Press the "ESC" key to exit from the menu without saving.
-The active display part (number area or function) is framed; the active element (posi-
tion or function) is shown in inverse video.

iSave your settings in the menu Load/Save settings. Use a Setup number if necessary. Otherwise, the save is only temporary until the next time the controller is
switched off.
Press the ESC key several times if necessary to exit without changes until the previous
menu item is reached.
Changing between the individual menu items can be performed with the arrow keys.
Almost every menu item has its own help which can be invoked with Help or ?.

2.2.2 Display, LEDs
The display of the controller with a size of 52 x 30 mm also enables the reliable reading
of measured values. The background color of the display can automatically switch e. g.
if a limit value is exceeded, see Chap. 5.3.4.The display values can be averaged. The
display can show up to 6 different measured values at the same time. The changeover
between the various displays is performed using the arrow keys.

An output channel with the same name is assigned to each measured value. As measu-
ring unit millimeters or inch are possible. In the case of error values from the sensors or
deactivated data source, data source is output “---“.

2.3 Web Interface, Ethernet
Dynamic web pages are generated in the Universal Controller which contain the current
settings of the controller and the peripherals. The operation is only possible while there
is an Ethernet connection to the Universal Controller.

2.5 Thickness Measurement with ILD 1700
This chapter describes a comparative thickness measurement using two optical laser
sensors of the series ILD 1700. The display shows the displacement values and the
thickness value (absolute dimension) of each sensor on the CSP2008. The distance of
both laser sensors from each other is not precisely known, see Chap. 5.3.10.6.
For the thickness measurement, the CSP2008 needs a measurement object of known
thickness (= master value) once at the start of the thickness measurement. Starting from
this, the CSP2008 calculates the distance of both laser sensors of the series ILD 1700
from each other and thus the thickness of the target, see Chap. 5.3.10.3.
The following description requires that the sensors are connected, the laser activation is
on, the voltage supply at the CSP2008 is switched on and that the CSP is connected via
Ethernet to the network (PC), see Chap. 5.2.

Loading the parameter set into the CSP2008
Selecting of the parameters. All settings of one measurement procedure are saved by
the CSP2008 within one parameter set. Load/save settings, see Chap. 5.3.12.
When the Browse button is pressed, the Windows Explorer window is opened to select
the saved configuration file. The path is cached when the selected file in the selection
window is opened. The loading of the selected file is then performed by clicking the Im-
port setup, see Chap. 5.3.12 button.
The program as well as the settings are now saved in the controller under the prese-
lected Setup No. and the controller operates with the new values after completion of the
loading process. Therefore, no reboot in the controller is also performed.

Move the slider on the bottom side of the controller down to remove the controller from
the DIN rail.
4.2 General Rules for the Installation
-Connect cable shields with the equipotential bonding (PE, earth conductor) on the
evaluation unit (switch cabinet, PC case) and prevent earth loops.
-Never lay signal cables next to or together with power cables or pulse-loaded cables
(e.g. for drive units and solenoid valves) in a bundle or in cable ducts. Always use
separate ducts.
4.3 Pin Assignment
4.3.1 Terminal Strips
The two plug-in terminal strips (FMC 1.5/13-STF-3.5, see Fig. 7) are designed for a wire
cross section of 0.25 mm² to 1.5 mm². The terminal strips are mounted on the controller
with two screws and can be removed for the wiring or a fast controller change.

4.3.1.2 Laser Switch On
The digital input has overload and reverse polarity protection.
Connect the inputs Laser and GND in order to switch on the laser beam of the con-
nected sensors, see Fig. 7, see Fig. 10.
A connection of the input to GND using a button or a transistor (NPN - Open Collector) is

4.3.1.3 Inputs for Reset, Synchronization and Triggering
The digital inputs have overload and reverse polarity protection.
Connect the inputs Zero or Sync/Trig to GND in order to initiate the function, see
Fig. 7, see Fig. 10.
A connection of the input to GND using a button or a transistor (NPN - Open Collector) is
sufficient for starting.
The direction (LOW or HIGH) of the activated input Sync/Trig or reset (Zero) is speci-
fied in the basic settings of the terminal block, see Chap. 5.3.6.1.

4.3.1.5 GND Reference Grounds
The GND reference grounds are connected to each other, but must be assigned and
separately connected to the peripherals. Connect the terminal PE to the earth conductor
connection of the mains power supply.
4.3.1.6 Analog Outputs
The analog outputs (Ana1 / Ana2) are protected against electrostatic discharge (ESD).
They are jointly potential-separated from GND and have common reference ground
GNDA. Micro-Epsilon recommends a parallel capacity of 10 nF provided by the customer
directly at the terminal device for interference suppression.
4.3.2 Sensor Connections
At the two sensor connection sockets, up to two sensors can be connected with the
digital output (e.g. ILD1402) using special connection cables from the optional accesso-
ries. The controller automatically detects the measuring ranges of the sensors.
Plugging in and detaching the sensor connections:
Position the red marking points of plug and socket opposite each other and now
plug them both together.
Additional guidance grooves on the sensor connectors prevent them from being con-
nected incorrectly.
Hold the connectors on the grooved grips (outer sleeves) and pull them apart without
twisting to undo the plug connection. Pulling on the cable and the lock nut only locks the
plug-in connectors of the type ODU MINI-SNAP FP and does not release the connection.
iIt is important that the cable is never subjected to excessive pull force. Install a strain relief close to the controller.
Do not twist the plugged connection.

The sensors are activated if the sensor connections have been configured correctly and
laser switch off is deactivated, see Chap. 4.3.1.2.
4.3.3 RS422
The galvanically isolated RS422 port has a maximum baud rate of 691.2 kBaud. The
baud rate in the delivery condition is set to 115.2 kBaud.
Data format default settings: 8 data bits, no parity, one stop bit (8,N,1).
The signals of the transmitter Tx and receiver Rx are cross connected. The reference
grounds (GND) of controller and receiver (e.g. PC or PLC) must be connected. This con-
nection can also be made via the cable shield, if a 4-pin screened cable is used.
It is advisable to use shielded cables with twisted pairs for Rx and Tx. 9-pin standard
RS232 cables are not suitable.

4.3.4 Ethernet
The TCP and UDP Internet protocols are used for connecting the Universal Controller via
the Ethernet port. A PC with a Web browser and a free Ethernet port or a network con-
nection is required for this. The standard protocol is TCP/IP.
Connect the controller (Ethernet) to a PC using an Ethernet direct connection
(LAN) or switch (Intranet). Use a LAN cable with RJ-45 connectors for this.

4.3.5 EtherCAT
The sequence of extension terminals must comply with the actual arrangement in the
bus. The terminals follow on the bus coupler EK1100. The following sequence is to ob-
serve at the terminals: Analog / Digital output terminals, Analog- / Digital input terminals,
RS422 extension terminal.
Make sure that the individual components are securely locked into the rail. The bus must
be locked up with the bus end terminal.

Do not connect the protective earth connection PE of RS422 extension terminal with the
supply ground of system respectively field supply. As a result, the bus communication is
disrupted or the RS422 extension terminal damaged.
Connect the inputs laser and GND to the RS422 extension terminal in order to
switch on the laser beam of the connected sensors, see Fig. 13.
A connection of the input to GND using a button or a transistor (NPN - Open collector) is
sufficient for starting.
The laser beam of the sensors, connected to the RS422 extension terminal, is switched
off for open inputs.
Connect the controller (EtherCAT) with an EtherCAT bus coupler. Use a LAN cable
with RJ-45 connectors.
