Micron Wings SloFly User manual

Your kit contains the following items
Pre- cut airfoil parts
Formed Depron prop blades
Rubber
Wooden body formers
Mount and prop fittings.
Sample Flight Video:
See the SloFly in action (Youtube video link)
Overview:
The SloFly is a uniquely designed rubber powered
glider which is able to fly at slow speeds, making it
perfect for indoor (hall or sports facility) flying or
for outdoor flying on zero wind days. This is
achieved by using light weight parts to give an all
up flying weight of just 8.5 grams. The slow flight
speeds are achieved by the combination of prop
diameter and size which produces ample thrust
but at a slower rotational speed in a conventional
rubber band powered setup.
Skill Level Required: Intermediate
The SloFly is not a snap together kit. There is a
degree of trimming and gluing to be done to
construct the body formers and wings as well as
sanding of the prop blades. Finally, test gliding and
trimming is required to produce a good flight path.
This involves adjusting the position of the centre of
balance, increasing down-thrust on prop and
adjusting the incidence of the tailplane. See the
instruction manual for details.
Designs:
The SloFly comes in 2 designs –High Wing and Low
Wing. The build process for each design is almost
the same and both are covered in the instruction
manual. There is no difference in the flight
characteristics between the two designs, but if you
have a preference for one over the other please
contact us to check on stock availability.
Additional Items You May Need
* Foam safe glue
* Wood glue
Low Wing Design
High Wing Design
The flight surfaces for this glider are made from very thin
light weight foam. If any of the surfaces have become
creased bent in transit, you can flatten them with a “warm”
iron. Sandwich the foam between two pieces of paper on
a flat surface and quickly rub them with a warm iron to
flatten. Note that the main wing section has a deliberate
crease. Do not iron this out.
You will need to trim the tabs from the wing and wing tip
sections as shown here. Trim straight on the main wing
section and follow the angle when you trim the leading
edge of the wing tip
Use foam safe glue to glue on the wing tips. Try to use as
little glue as possible. The angle on the wing tip piece
when joined to the main wing will give a natural dihedral.
We recommend using UHU POR Expanded Polystyrene for
gluing the foam parts.

For the Low Wing design the wing brace parts are glued
together as shown here and the two rubber pieces can be
rolled onto the body former sticks to hold the wing brace
in place while you do test flying. After test flying is
completed the wing brace can be glued in place.
For the High Wing design the wing brace parts are glued
together as shown here and the two plastic struts are used
attach the brace to the body former stick.
Angled
For either design you can use foam safe glue to attach the
wing to the wing brace mount.
In the kit there are three body former sticks. Take your time and work very carefully with these sticks. They are made
to be light and are therefore fragile. The two longer sticks need to be cut to lengths of 20cm and 19.7cm. The slightly
shorter one will be the bottom body former and the shorter length will give the prop mount a small amount of down
thrust.
Use the diagram below as a guide to construct the body.
The tail surface mounts are used to attach the tailplane and
vertical stabiliser as shown here. Take your time and work
the parts into place. You may find it easier to spread the
gaps a bit before inserting the foam surfaces.
Use sand paper to round off the edges of the front face of
the propeller blades.
The propeller blades can then be stuck on to the propeller
arms with the provided doubles sided tape.

The rubber will be doubled over and a knot needs to be tied
in one end. First measure the length needed so that when it
is doubled up on the hook it doesn’t hang down (as shown
below)

You can attach the rubber at the back by opening up this joint.
You are now ready for test flying. First do a test glide and then start with just ½ a row of knots in the rubber.
Once the plane is trimmed for flight you can shoes to glue all the parts in place if desired.
Centre of balance
Adjust the angle of incidence on the
tailplane by packing or closing this
gap. You can hold it in place with
some masking tape while test flying.
