Xpress Hardware Assembly Guide (includes XE, XP, and XL)
•These instructions show how toassemble an Xpress systems out of the box.
•Although the picturesshow the Xpress XP model, the procedure isvery similar for the XE and XL models except where noted.
•No tools aremandatoryfor this procedure (flat-head screwdriver is optional).
•For XE systems, which arrive partially assembled, skip tostep‘13’.
2
Remove the rear panelfrom the back of the drive
enclosure (upper base assembly) by unscrewing the (2)
thumbscrews-XL has (3). Place the drive enclosure on top
of the base unit so it sits flush and even on all sides.
3
Secure the drive enclosure to the base unit using the (6)
thumbscrews inside of the drive enclosure. Tighteneach
screw partially first until all are threaded. Then proceed to
tighten each of the (6) screws completely.
4
Connect the power tail from the drives to the power
connector coming from the base unit power supply. These
connectors are color-coded for simplicity.
NOTE: For XL systemsthese cables are already
connected, so you may skip this step.
1
Place the base unit on a sturdy work surface, keeping in
mind that the printers on most systems willprotrude off the
back of the unit approximately 6–8 inches.

2
6
Connect the power lead from the drive enclosure fans to
the matching power connector from the power supply on
the base unit. Again, these connectors are color-coded.
7
Mount the elevator assembly onto the Xpress base.
Lower the elevator onto the two alignment pins…
8
… then secure the elevator with the (2) thumbscrews
from inside the drive enclosure behind the elevator.
HINT: The thumbscrews may go in easier if you pull up on
the elevator slightly while tightening the screws.
5
Route the SATA drive cables from the base unit up to
the drive enclosure, and connect each to its respective
drive. The cables are tied so that each goes to a specific
drive.

3
9
Connect the roboticscontrol and printer controlcables to the back of the elevator. These are the graycables thatcome
from behind the two fans on the drive enclosure, near the printer control and host communication ports. Just follow the
above diagram and remember that each plug is unique and keyed so that it is not possible to plug one into the wrong port.

Unscrew the wing-nut from the hoist block. Mountthe
arm by lining up the pegs on the arm beam to the holes in
the hoistblock. Secure the arm with the wing-nut. If the
wing-nut does not fit, try rotating the hoist block 180
degrees.

Connect the flat-flex cable between the elevator and
the arm. When doing this, carefully line up the connector
with the receptacle and push until you hear a ‘click’.

3
To install the printer plate (onto which the printer is
mounted on), place it on top of the drive enclosure so that
the pins are facing up and the (2) tabs go into the slots on
the right side of the drive enclosure. Secure the plate with
the (2) wing-nuts.
1
4
Place the printer on top of the printer plate so that the
pins on the plate go intothe holes underneath the printer
itself or into the holes ofthe attachment already affixed to
the printer. The printer should sit flat and level on top of
the printer plate.
NOTE: The TEAC K2 printer has a latch knob located on
the front of the printer plate. Once the printer and plate are
securelymounted, releasing this latch (pull) will allow the
printer to move to the right to allow the user to open the
side panel of the printer without interference from other
modules. When first installing this printer, be sure the plate
is in the left-most position and thelatch is in the locked
position.

5
Connect the USB cable from the printer (all models) to
the labeled USB port on the base unit. For easy
installation, it is recommended that you plug the USB cable
into the port labeled for that cable. The other ports are
designated for different devices.
NOTE: TheUSB ports and positions on your system may
differ from those in the photo. Please follow the port
labeling on your particular system.
1
2
Replace the rear cover panel on the drive enclosure
using the (2) thumbscrews-XL has(3).

5
17
(PRISM PRINTER ONLY)Connect the other end of
the serial cable to the COM1 port on the base unit. For XL
systems, the cables should be labeled.
18
( XPRESSJET II PRINTER ONLY ) Connect the
serial (PS2 to PS2) cable to the back of the printer. For XL
systems, each cable should be labeled-simply match the
numbers to the corresponding ports and printers.
19
( TEAC K2 PRINTER ONLY ) Connect theserial
(PS2 to PS2) cable to the Status Aux port on the printer.
For XL systems, each cable should be labeled-simply
match the numbers to the corresponding ports and printers.
1
6
(PRISM PRINTER ONLY)Connect the serial (DB9
to PS2) cable to the back of the printer. For XL systems,
each cable should be labeled-simply match the numbers to
the corresponding ports and printers.

6
21
Connect the serial (DB9M to DB9F) cable(withserial-
to-USB adapter)to the port labeled ‘Host Communication’
on the back ofthe drive enclosure.
NOTE: For XEsystemsthe Host Communication is
internal, so you may skip this step.
22
Connect the serial-to-USB adapter end of the host
communication cable to the USB port on the base unit
labeled ‘Host Communication’.
NOTE: TheUSB ports and positions on your system may
differ from thosein the photo. Please follow the port
labeling on your particular system.
For XEsystemsthe Host Communication is internal, so you
may skip this step.
23
Remove the USB software key from the instruction
manual package (carton containingfolder andsoftware
envelopes). Insert this key into the designated USB slot.
20
( XPRESSJET IIand TEAC K2 PRINTER ONLY )
Connect the other end of the serial cable to the Printer
Control port on theback of thedrive enclosure. For XL
systems, the cables should be labeled.

7
25
Plug the power cords into the base unit, printer(s), and
upper base unit on XL systems only. If the power supply
on the base unit (or upper base) has a power switch, switch
itto the ‘ON’ position.
26
Place the tall spindles onto the base unit according to
the cut-outs. Each spindle is identical except for the short
‘reject’ spindle-which goes on the right. On the XL, these
smaller spindlesgo in spaces ‘L’ and ‘R’.
27
If your system has a 2-drive module (XP), mount it on
the left side of the upper base. Place the module about ½
inch back from the front, insert the tab underneath the
module into the slot on the top/ front of the upper base.
Lower the back of the 2-drive module onto the rear tab, and
slide the module forward so that the front is aligned with the
main drive enclosure. Secure the 2-drive module with the
thumbscrew on the back of the unit.
Connect the module to the base unit using the (2) e-SATA
cablessupplied. The ports should be labeled on both sides
to show which e-SATA port each drive plugsinto. Connect
the power cordto the 2-drive module.
24
Unpackage the flat-panel monitor and connect the
VGA cable from the monitor to the back of the base unit.

For ‘ImageAligner 2’Only:
You are almost there…
Once all hardware set-up is complete, proceed to the Xpress Hardware Manual for calibration and testing.
ii
Attach the camera mount plate/ light shield assembly to
the arm by lining up the (2) pins and (1) mounting screw
with the holes on the boom arm. Secure with the (1) wing-
nut on top of the arm.
NOTE: The thumbscrew on the plate should face theback.
iii
Secure the IA2 camera to the mount plate by screwing
the thumbscrew into the TOP hole on the back of the IA2
camera. When positioning the camera, be sure that the
camera is pointing perpendicular to the printer plate-not to
the arm or any other mounting hardware.
iv
Connect the USB cable from the IA2 camera tothe
labeled USB port on the rear of the Xpress base unit.
Secure the USB cable to the boom arm using the clips that
are attached to the arm.
i
Mount the boom arm using the (3) wing-nuts. For XL
systems, there are separate ‘left’ and ‘right’ arms-just
make sure that the arm is ‘pointing’ forward on each side.
