KVMS Extender.
Technicalprecautions
Thisequipmentgeneratesradiofrequencyenergyandifnotinstalledinaccordance
withthemanufacturer’sinstructions,maycauseradiofrequencyinterference.
ThisequipmentcomplieswithPart15,SubpartJoftheFCCrulesforaClassA
computingdevice. ThisequipmentalsocomplieswiththeClass Alimitsforradio
noiseemissionfromdigitalapparatussetoutintheRadioInterferenceRegulation
oftheCanadianDepartmentofCommunications. Theseaboverulesaredesignedto

Adjustmenthotkey; Shift, D.FromtheReceiverpositionpress Shift, release Shift
then press D, thepictureadjusts.Thereare6loopedpresetadjustments. Press the
hotkeyuntilthepicturequalityissatisfactory. Oncethe Receiverisswitchedoff
theadjustmentislost. AdjustmentsareonlysavedintheKVMS Settingsmode, see
thesectionbelow.
13.ConfiguringtheKVMSsystem
TheKVMS systemhasa numberofconfigurationoptions. Forexample, control,
timeout, DDCrefreshandvideotuning. AlsoforUNIXservers, youmust
configurethekeyboardsetting.

Lockdisabledallowsthecurrentlynon-controllingpositiontotakecontrolbythe
method outlinedbelowin 3Takecontrol.
WhenLockisenabled, controlcanbelockedatonepositionpreventingtheother
positionfromtakingcontrol.

Whencontrolisnotlockedatoneposition, thenon-controllingpositioncangain
controlafteraperiodofinactivity(timeout)orbypressingthehotkey Shift, F10.
Choosethemethodfortakingcontrolfromtheotherposition, eitherbytimeout
(default)orhotkey.

7DDC refresh
DisplayDataChannel(DDC)isa VESAstandardforexchanginginformation
betweena monitorand a videoadapter.
InextendermodewherethereisnomonitorconnectedtotheTransmitter, the
computerbootswiththedefaultresolutionand refreshrate.Thismaynotbe
suitablefortheReceivermonitor. ChoosetoinputtheReceiver(remote)monitor’s
DDCinformationintotheTransmitter’smemory. Onbootingthecomputerwill
emulatetheReceivermonitortype.

UpdatetheDDCinformationifyoureplacethemonitor.
Fora dualcontrolscenario, werecommend usingsimilarmonitorsatboth
locations. Whenthemonitorsarenotsimilar, inputtheDDCinformationofthe
lowerresolutionmonitor.

betweenthered, greenand bluecomponentsinevitablyoccurs.Thisisbecausethe
differentlengthofeachpaircausesthesignalstoreachthemonitoratdifferent
times.
Toseewhichsignalisslowerorfasterlookatthetestcardand seewhichofthe
colorsarenotaligned. ForexampleinFigure14, redistheslowestcolor. You
wouldthereforedelaygreenandblueuntiltheyalignwithred.

14.Operatingthesystem
Ingeneralthesystemiscontrolledina firstcomefirstservedbasis, witheitherthe
TransmitterorReceiverpositiontakingcontrol. Theotherpositioncangaincontrol
byusingthemouse/keyboardaftertheperiodofinactivity(timeout), orbypressing
thehotkey Shift, F10 –dependingonthemethodchosenintheKVMS Extender
settings–seepages12 and 12.
Lockdisable/enable
BydefaultLockisdisabled. WhenyouenableLockintheKVMS Extender
settings, thecurrentcontrollingpositioncanlockcontrolsothattheotherposition
cannotgaincontrol.
Tolockcontrol:
Press Shift, F12. Thecontrollingposition’sLockLEDblinks. Theotherposition’s
LockLEDilluminatesand theActiveLEDblinks.
Toreleasecontrol, press Shift, Esc. TheLockLEDsdarken. Eitherposition can
nowtakecontrol.
15.Upgradingthefirmware
PeriodicallyMinicomwillproduceupgradesforboththeTransmitterand Receiver
firmware. Thelatestupgradescanbefoundonourwebsite www.minicom.com in
theSupportsection.
UpgradingisdoneusingtheUpdatesoftwarefoundon thesuppliedCDunder
CustomerSupport/UtilitiesoronourwebsiteintheSupportmenu.
InstalltheUpgradesoftwareonany computerevenonenotpartoftheKVMS
systemwiththefollowingrequirements:
·Pentium166 orhigherwith16 MBRAMand 10 MBfreeHardDrivespace
·Free Serialport
·Windows2000 orhigher
Onceinstalleda KVMS ExtenderUpdateiconappearsontheDesktop.
UpgradingisdonefromtheTransmitterposition. Thefollowingmustbeconnected
totheTransmitter:
·TheReceivervia CAT5cable
·TheDownloadSerialcable
TheDownloadSerialcableconnectstotheTransmitter’sServiceportand the
computer’sSerialportasillustratedbelow.

Beforeupgradingthefirmware, youmustverifywhichfirmwareandhardware
versionstheunitshave.
ToverifytheTransmitterversionnumbers:
1.SelectTransmitter.
2.Click .Thefirmwareversionnumberappears.
3.Click .Thehardwareversionnumberappears.
ToverifytheReceiverversionnumbers:
SelectReceiverthenfollowsteps2and 3above.
Note!When“Notresponding”appears,checktheSerialDownloadcableis
connected, theunitsarepoweredon, and thecorrectComportisselected.
Updating thefirmware
Toupdatethefirmware:
1.Checktheappropriatebox–ReceiverorTransmitter.
2.Fromthe File menu, choose Open. The Open boxappears.SeeFigure17.
3.Navigatetothefolderthatcontainsthefirmwareupdatefilethatyou
downloadedfromtheMinicomwebsite. Youmayonlyseethefilesthat
matchthefileselectionmask.
