mIoT Captis Power+ Installation Guide April 2020
10 Rev. 1
CHECKING NETWORK SIGNAL
The Telstra IoT Network offers a range of network technologies to connect a range of use cases within your
business. Leveraging their mobile infrastructure, Telstra's Cellular Low Power Wide Area Networks (Cellular
LPWANs) are built specifically for scaled IoT deployments to give you better, cost-efficient coverage - even
in challenging locations that high bandwidth technologies may not reach.
Prior to installing the Captis device in its final location, be sure to check the cellular signal coverage at that
location to ensure that the device will be able to connect once installed.
Visit the Telstra website: https://www.telstra.com.au/business-enterprise/solutions/internet-of-things/iot-
coverage to view a map of LTE-M and NBIoT coverage areas.
mIoT also recommends that you use a signal strength meter to determine whether your chosen installation
location has enough cellular signal for the Captis device to connect and operate effectively.
Appropriate signal strength meters include:

SIGNAL STRENGTH & QUALITY
The Captis device functions effectively in the RSRP Excellent and Good ranges (> -102). This is the
acceptable range of connection quality, which should be identified at the time of installation.
Warranty conditions for the device require an average signal quality of better than -96 dBm. If you choose to
install the device in a poor signal area, then this may have an impact on device warranty.
CHECKING SENSOR & NETWORK CONNECTIONS
Before leaving the installation site, you must check that the connection between the device and the sensor is
functional and that there is adequate cellular signal for the Captis to work as required.
1. Activate your sensor to create some measurements. How you do this will depend on the sensor.
2. Wake up the Captis using the magnet. If the device has been installed correctly and is able to
connect to a cellular signal, then it will then transmit the recorded data to the cloud platform.
3. Check that the data has successfully transmitted to the cloud platform in the correct format, and that
no alarms have been recorded.
a. If you do not have access to the platform at the install location, contact your organisation’s
support team and have them log into the cloud platform to confirm that it has appeared.
If the data has been submitted correctly, the registration and installation are a success. If the data does not
appear, see Next Step: ‘Troubleshooting’.
