Testing
Mechanical
The tensile test, or pull test, is a means of evaluating the mechanical properties of the crimped connections. The
following charts show the UL specifications for various wire sizes. The tensile strength is shown in pounds. It
indicates the minimum acceptable force to break or separate the terminal from the conductor.

OPERATION
Crimping Terminals
Open the tool by first closing the jaws sufficiently for the ratchet mechanism to release.
1. Place the terminal centering the barrel in the lower jaw as shown in Figure 1.
2. Partially close the hand tool jaws until the connector is held snug in place. See Figure 2.
. Insert the properly stripped wire into the terminal barrel. (See Figure 2 and .
4. Complete the crimp by closing the hand tool handles until they release.
Note: The tamper proof ratchet action will not release the tool until it has been fully closed.
5. Remove the crimp and inspect for proper crimp. Molex offers a Crimp Inspection Handbook for closed barrel
industrial product. See our website or contact your sales engineer.

Crimping Butt Splices
1. Position the splice into the proper color-coded nest.
2. Partially close the tool to hold the splice in place.
. Insert the properly stripped wire into the splice. The wires end should butt against the tab in the terminal. See
Figure 4. Cycle the tool.
4. Remove the crimped splice. Inspect for proper crimp location.
5. Rotate the butt splice terminal 180°, so that the opposite end of splice is in the nest.
6. Repeat steps 2 thru 4.
Note: Make sure the seam of the terminal is oriented up or down in the tool if using unbrazed product, as
this will provide higher pull force values.
Maintenance
It is recommended that each operator of the tool be made aware of,
and responsible for, the following maintenance steps:
1. Remove dust, moisture and other contaminants with a clean
brush, or soft, lint-free cloth.
2. Do not use any abrasive materials that could damage the tool.
. Make certain all pins; pivot points and bearing surfaces are
protected with a thin coat of high quality machine oil. Do not oil
excessively. This hand tool was engineered for durability, but
like any fine piece of equipment, it needs cleaning and
lubrication for a maximum service life of trouble-free crimping.
Light oil, such as 0 weight automotive oil, used at the oil points
shown in Figure 5, every 5,000 crimps or months will significantly enhance the tool life and ensure a stable
calibration.
4. When tool is not in use, keep the handles closed to prevent objects from becoming lodged in the crimping dies,
and store the tool in a clean, dry area.

Miscrimps or Jams
Should this tool ever become stuck or jammed in a partially closed
position, Do Not force the handles open or closed. The tool will
open easily by pressing the ratchet release lever, (See Figure 6).
How to Adjust Crimp Force (See Figure 7)
Over the life of the tool, it may be necessary to adjust tool handle
preload force. Listed below are the steps required to adjust the
crimping force of the hand tool to obtain proper crimp conditions:
This tool is factory preloaded at 48-65 LBS.
1. Loosen the stud nut on the front of the handle with a screwdriver.
2. Insert a screwdriver in the slot of the stud (on the back of the tool) and adjust the force. Clockwise (CW) will
increase the force, counter clockwise (CCW) will decrease the handle force. See Figure 7.
. Retighten the nut while holding the stud on the front of the tool.
4. Check the crimp specifications after tool force is adjusted.
Quality Assurance Test
To check the quality of this tool, pin gauge measurements should
be taken in each conductor nest and compared to this chart. The
tool should be lubricated before the quality assurance test to
ensure consistent measurements. Handle preload is factory set to
48-65 LBS See How to Adjust Crimp Force, (See Figure 7). If the
tool does not meet the specifications below, during the quality
assurance test, then the tool should be disqualified and a new tool
purchased.

Hand held crimping tools are intended for low volume, prototyping, or repair requirements only.

1. Termination quality is dependent on proper profile choice. Molex customers should independently verify that
the termination they intend to use, meets their quality and performance needs because this tool does not have
a terminal locator. Not all terminal, wire, and profile combinations will achieve minimum pull force
requirements, or provide an acceptable crimp form if the terminal is not positioned as described in these
operation instructions. As such, Molex makes no warranties, express or implied, as to the performance or
reliability of the crimp, or the appropriateness of the customer’s application.
2. Manually powered hand tools are intended for low volume or field repair. This tool is NOT intended for
production use. Repetitive use of this tool should be avoided.
. Insulated rubber handles are not protection against electrical shock.
4. Wear eye protection at all times.
5. Use only the Molex terminals specified for crimping with this tool.
Warranty
This tool is for electrical terminal crimping purposes only. This tool is made of the best quality materials. All vital
components are long life tested. All tools are warranted to be free of manufacturing defects for a period of 0 days.
Should such a defect occur, we will repair or exchange the tool free of charge. This repair or exchange will not be
applicable to altered, misused, or damaged tools. This tool is designed for hand use only. Any clamping, fixturing,
or use of handle extensions voids this warranty.
CAUTION: Molex crimp specifications are valid only when used with Molex terminals and tooling.
