Maintenance
Hull
Minorscratchesandabrasionsshouldbeattendedtointheirearlystages,initially
byusinga mediumgraderubbingcompound.Ifthisisineffective,rubthearea
lightlywith400gradewetanddrypaper(usedwithwater)untilthemark
disappears.Smooththeareawith800gradefollowedby1200grade(bothwet)and
thenapplya siliconefreewaxpolish.
Stresscracksshouldbelookedatbyanexpertandsomeremedialactiontaken.
fRubbingwith abrasivecompoundsandmaterialsremovesthe
gelcoat.
Asthis isonly a thin
*layer,greatcareshouldbetaken.
Annualcleaning
Washthehullannuallywithwarmwatercontaininga littledetergent.Stubborn
stainsandpolishshouldberemovedwitha recommendedreleaseagentoroil
removingfluid.Polishthehullwitha siliconefreewaxpolish.

Theanodeshouldbereplacedwhenitisapproximatelytwothirdseroded.Ifany

oftheanodeisa galvanisedsteelstripwhichprovidestheattachmentlugsforthe
anode.Theanodeisremovedbyundoingthetwosecuringnutsandwashers.Itis
recommendedthatwhenreplacingtheanode,thenuts,washersandbackingsheet
arealsoreplaced.

headorspreaderareacanbuildupmovementtherebyincreasingtheshockloading
onthestays.Ontheotherhand,overtensionedriggingputsa highertotalloadon
thestaysandcanbejustasdamaging.Theentirestandingriggingisstainlesssteel
includingallterminals,toggles,bottlescrewsandwireropes.Someyachtsarefitted

Maintenance
Rigging checks
Duringthesailingseasonwhenyouryachtisincommission,regularmaintenance
checks shouldbecarriedoutandparticularlybeforea longvoyage.
1Examineall
steel/wire
ropesforcorrosion,wearanddamage.
2Examineallterminationsforsignsofwear,cracksordamage.Payparticular
attentiontoallsplitpins,theyshouldbethelargestsizepossibletopassthrough
thecotterpinholewithatleast3/4"protrudingthroughthehole.
3Examineallbottlescrewsforsignsofwearordamageandensuretheyare
'in
safety',
i.e.theinnerthreadsarevisiblethroughbothsafetyholes.Wherebottle
screwsarecoveredwithtapeorplastictubing,removetoenableexamination.
4Ensuretheendsofthespreaderbarareprotectedtopreventsail
chafing.Ensure
therigiscorrectlyadjusted.
5Removehalyardsfromthemastleavingmessengerlinesfor
rereefmg.
6Checkallrunningriggingforsignsofwear,payingparticularattentiontoalleye
splicesandendterminations.Onthewire/ropehalyardscheckthewirerope
splice.Iftheropesideofthespliceisstartingtoswellthenthewirehasstarted
torustandthehalyardshouldbereplaced.Washhalyardswhicharenotbeing
replacedandsoakropejoinsinlinseedoil(alsosoakjoinsonnewhalyards).
7Checkoverthestandingriggingpayingparticularattentiontothewirewhereit
enterstheswagefittings.Shouldtherebeanysignatallofcrackinginanyone
ofthewirestrandsthenreplacetheshroudconcerned.
8Lookforsignsofwearofridgingonclevispinswheretheymayrockorworkin
chainplatesorshroudtangs,alsolookforcorrespondingwearonmatingfittings.
9Whereshroudslocateintomastbymeansofa shroudterminalina slot,ensure
thatthereisnounduewear.

Running rigging
Therunningriggingcomprisesallthelinesandrelativemechanicsusedtohoistand
controlthesails,thisincludeshalyards,sheets,guys,lifts,downhaulsandouthauls
togetherwiththeirvariousshackles,blocks,cleatsandwinches.Itisessentialthat
theyareinspectedregularlyforanysignsofwearorstress.Informationontypesof
cordage,wireropesandfittingscanbegainedfroma goodchandler.
Sails
AllyachtsaresuppliedwithLucassailswhicharemanufacturedfromwoven
dacron.Thismaterialhasgoodtensilestrength,resistsabrasionandisnotunduly
affectedbymoisture,however,itcanbedamagedbyultra-violetlightandshould
notthereforebeexposedunnecessarilytosunlight.Iftreatedwithcareand
maintainedcorrectlythesesailsshouldgivemanyseasonsgoodservice.

Headsails
Someyachtsarefittedwithfurlingheadsailsbutifnot,theheadsailmustbe
removedandbaggedwhennotinuse.
Bagging
1Puttheheadofthesailintothesailbag.
2Worktheluff,leechandbodyofthesailintogether.
3Leavethetackandclewuntillastandpassthesailbagneckcordthroughboth
tackandclewbeforedrawingtight.Thisenablesthetacktobeconnectedtothe
stemheadandthesheetstobefittedtotheclewbeforethesailisreleasedfrom
thesailbag.Thesheetscanthenberunbackandsecuredwithoutbeingsnatched
bythesail.Thesailcanalsobehankedtotheforestay,onehankata time,until
onlytheheadislefttobeattachedtothehalyard.Inadverseconditionssails
baggedinthiswaycansavea greatdealoftimeontheforedeck.

tensions.Hoistthesailfullyensuringthatona mainsailtherearenowrinklesinthe
luffandalsothatona
headsail
theluffdoesnotcurveawayfromtheforestay
betweenthehanks.Creasesina sailarethefirstsignofincorrecttensionand
dependingontheirpositiononthesail,indicatewhetherthereistoomuchortoo
littletensioninthehalyard.
Sheeting and trimming
Thebasicruleofsailsheetingis"letitouttillitflaps,
pul
itintillitstops."
Trimmingandsheetingarebestexplainedinbooksspecificallywrittenforthe
purpose.Itisrecommendedthateveryyacht'slibraryhasone.
Kicker
Thiscontrolstheamountoftwistinthemainsailandalsoensuresthattheboom
doesnot
'kick
up'.
Therefore,theremustalwaysbesometensioninthekicking
strap,theonlyexceptionbeingwhenthemainsailissheetedinhard.Theeasiest
waytotensionthelackingstraptotheoptimumpositionisbyusingthetopbatten
asa guide.Thisshouldbeparalleltotheboom.Ifitliestoleeward,tightenthe
kickingstrapandifitliestowindwardloosenit.
