Introduction
The WIB4S is a NAVTEX and sea weather receiver. The device receives NAVTEX
messages on medium wave frequencies 518 kHz (internationa , Eng ish) and 490 kHz
(nationa , nationa anguage) and sea weather messages in German anguage (147,3 kHz,
11039 kHz, 4467,3 kHz) or Eng ish anguage (4583 kHz, 7646 kHz, 10100,8 kHz).
Both NAVTEX frequencies and one weather frequency od Deutscher Wetterdienst are
received simu taneous y.
The NAVTEX and weather messages are disp ayed on 240 x 128 pixe LCD.
The WIB4S equiped with an inserted precision air pressure sensor, is ab e to record the air
pressure during a period of up to seven days. On the device disp ay on y the air pressure
of the ast two days can be seen.
The device can be connected to the PC via an USB interface. The data of the WIB4S wi
be disp ayed by a comfortab e Windows software. The software is working with the
operating systems Windows XP, Vista and 7.
Software updates for the WIB4S are avai ab e in the Internet at:
http://www.weatherinfobox.com/eng ish/Down oads.htm
Connections
The connections for power supp y and antenna are ed out at the back of the WIB4S. The
fo owing tab e shows the termina assignment:
Terminal Assignment
red 12V +
b ack 12V -
green/ye ow Ground
BNC Antenna
The antenna termina (BNC) can be connected with an active antenna (12V) or a passive
antenna (e.g., iso ated backstay with passiv-ba un).
In the WIB4S menu you have to determine whether you use an active or passive antenna
(see page 15).
The antenna input impedance is 50Ω.
With water contact the signa to noise ratio and therefore the reception of weak signa s
improves. The ine GND is decoup ed to the 12V(-) connection by an 100nF/50V capacitor
in para e with a100kΩ resistor.
When connecting the supp y vo tage p ease pay attention to the correct po arity. Protect
the supp y ines of the WIB4S with time- ag 250mA fuse. The WIB4S is protected interna y
with a resetab e fuse e ement.
The WIB4S can be integrated to the board connecting b ock. For receiving and saving
messages in spite of the board network is switched off, the WIB4S must be connected
direct y to the battery. Additiona y the supp y ines must be protected by a fuse direct y at
4

battery.
With the enc osed USB cab e the connection of the WIB4S (out et USB) with PC/Notebook
wi be done.
The bulk of the USB jack as well as the connection 12V(-) are coupled with each
other. Please note you can get undesirable ground-loops between the USB
connection and the PC. In such a case other electric devices can be parasetical
connected with ground (or battery -). Devices needing much current could cause a
damage in wiring or connected devices.
Handling
The WIB4S is hand ed by five keys. Press the power key ( ) to switch the device on or
off. In order to switch off, the power key must be pressed during approx. 3 seconds.
Use the four cursor keys (▲▼◄►) to navigate within the menus. After switch on, the
WIB4S disp ays the main menu (see figure be ow).
On the eft beside the menu entries an arrow is ocated which can be moved by the keys
▲ and ▼.
With the key ► the menu item beside the arrow is se ected. With the key ◄ the previous
menu step can be reached unti the main base. Practice a whi e with the hand ing of the
cursor keys, unti you are fami ar.
On top of the disp ay the actua air pressure, the air pressure tendency and the time of day
are disp ayed. If the WIB4S is in timer operation the remaining term is a so shown.
The menu anguage of the WIB4S can be changed (see section Set Language, page 17).

DWD Messages
The Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) transmits sea weather reports, weather forecasts and
station messages on the frequencies 147,3kHz, 11039 kHz and 14467,3 kHz in German
anguage and on the frequencies 4583 kHz, 7646 kHz und 10100,8 kHz in Eng ish
anguage.
You can adjust the WIB4S to receive either weather messages in German or Eng ish
anguage (see section Select DWD Frequency, page 11).
The WIB4S receives and stores this messages sorted by message type. To disp ay the
messages p ease se ect the menu item DWD GERMAN or DWD ENGLISH in the main menu.
In the DWD menu an overview of the different message types is shown:
By se ecting a message type from the menu the corresponding message appears. If a

NAVTEX Messages
The structure of a NAVTEX message is to be exp ained on the basis of fo owing examp e:
ZCZC PA09
NETHERLANDS COASTGUARD
NAVIGATIONAL WARNING NR. 9 172128 UTC AUG
PLATFORM L10-G 53-29.4N 004-11.7E
UNLIT
NNNN
Each NAVTEX-message begins with the etters ZCZC, fo owed by the message
identification (PA09). The first etter of the message identification serves the master station
for identification. In this examp e it is NETHERLANDS COASTGUARD (P).
In the second etter the kind of message is coded, here navigationa warning (navigation
warnings). The ast two numbers of the message identification (09) are a seria numbers.
The number 00 has a privi eged position. It is reserved for distress messages.
NAVTEX messages have a time stamp. It is shown at the end of the third ine (172128
UTC AUG) and means: 17. August, 21:28 UTC. The time stamp refers to the date, the
message was produced and not to the time of the radiant transmission. Afterwards the
message content fo ows. The message ends with NNNN.
To disp ay NAVTEX messages p ease fo ow the menus entries
NAVTEX 518 HZ (ENGLISH) (internationa e messages) or
NAVTEX 490 HZ (NATIONAL) (nationa messages) in the main menu.
An overview of the different message types is shown. The number behind the message
types indicates the number of messages of the corresponding type stored in the WIB4S.
O d messages are de eted automatica y after two days uptime.

Set Screensaver
By se ecting the menu item SCREENSAVER in the menu SETTINGS the adjustment of the
screensaver atency or switch off the screensaver is possib e with the keys ▲ and ▼.
The adjustment range is between 2 and 10 minutes. The screensaver atency determines,
how ong it asts, unti the screen saver becomes active after the ast keystroke. If the
screensaver is active, the disp ay is switched off. This raises the ife time of the disp ay
and reduces the current consumption of the device.
Set Barometer Altitude
By se ecting the menu item BAROMETER ALTITUDE in the menu SETTINGS the
adjustment of the baromter a titude (height of the device above sea eve ) in 5 meter steps
is possib e with the keys ▲ and ▼.
With correct y justified barometer height the WIB4S disp ays the air pressure referred to
sea eve .
The adjustment range of the barometer a titude is between 0 and 1000 meter.
15

Calibrate Barometer
The typica ong term stabi ity of the air pressure sensor of the WIB4S is -1 hPa/year.
Every year the disp ayed air pressure sinks by approx. 1 hPa. You can correct this by
ca ibrating the device. You need a reference air pressure referred on sea eve . The
baromter a titude must be adjusted correct y before ca ibration.
In order to ca ibrate the air pressure sensor p ease se ect the menu item CALIBRATE
BAROMETER in the menu SETTINGS.
Now adjust the air pressure disp ay (on top of the eft) with the keys ▲ and ▼ unti it is
conform to the reference air pressure.
Antenna remote Power Supply
If the WIB4S is running with an active antenna (12V), the remote power supp y must be

Test Radio Reception
The reception test is reachab e either via main menu item TEST RADIO RECEPTION in
the main menu.
In the reception test the reception eve and the received text of one DWD frequency
(switchab e with ►) and both NAVTEX frequencies are disp ayed.
Note p ease: The NAVTEX transmitters emit messages on y at there transmitting times, so
at the NAVTEX frequencies most time on y sense ess text appears.
The German weather service transmits continuous y. If no message is transmitted, RY
waiting oops are emitted.
