WIRELESS MODULE TECHNICAL AND OPERATIONAL
DESCRIPTION
PTR6100M -- nRF24L01+
2.4GHz 2Mbps Super MiNi Embedded Tranceiver Module
Operational Description:
The nRF24L01+ is a single chip 2.4GHz transceiver with an embedded baseband pr t c l engine
(Enhanced Sh ckBurst™), suitable f r ultra l w p wer wireless applicati ns. The nRF24L01+ is designed
f r perati n in the w rld wide ISM frequency band at 2.400 - 2.525GHz.
For U.S. and Canada the allowed frequenc range is 2.400-2.483 GHz.
More technical informations are available in the section “Limitation of the single-modular transmitter (for U.S.
and Canada)”.
The embedded baseband pr t c l engine (Enhanced Sh ckBurst™) is based n packet c mmunicati n
and supp rts vari us m des fr m manual perati n t advanced aut n m us pr t c l perati n. Internal
FIFOs ensure a sm th data fl w between the radi fr nt end and the system’s MCU. Enhanced Sh ck-
Burst™ reduces system c st by handling all the high speed link layer perati ns.
The radi fr nt end uses GFSK m dulati n. It has user c nfigurable parameters like frequency channel,
utput p wer and air data rate. nRF24L01+ supp rts an air data rate f 250 kbps, 1 Mbps and 2Mbps.
In rder t c municate with the internal chip nRF24L01+ the external circuitry must implement a fast SPI ver the
f ll wing six 5V lts t llerant digital signal:
• IRQ (this signal is active l w and c ntr lled by three maskable interrupt s urces)
• CE (this signal is active high and used t activate the chip in RX r TX m de)
• CSN (SPI signal)
• SCK (SPI signal)
• MOSI (SPI signal)
•
MISO (SPI signal)
The SPI is a standard SPI with a maximum data rate f 10Mbps.
Thru the SPI interface the external l gic can have access t any f the internal register, permitting t c ntr l the status (
TX, Rx, stand by, etc) , t set the transmissi n p wer, read the received data and take c ntr l f thers features.
A p wer antenna is printed directly int PCB av iding external antenna c nnecti n.

Radio Control Description:
The nRF24L01+ has a built-in state machine that c ntr ls the transiti ns between the chip’s perating
m des. The state machine takes input fr m user defined register values and internal signals.
The nRF24L01+ can be c nfigured in p wer d wn, standby, RX r TX m de.
Power Down mode
In p wer d wn m de nRF24L01+ is disabled using minimal current c nsumpti n. All register values available
are maintained and the SPI is kept active, enabling change f c nfigurati n and the upl ading/d wnl ading
f data registers.
Standb Modes
Standby-I m de is used t minimize average current c nsumpti n while maintaining sh rt start up times.
In this m de nly part f the crystal scillat r is active.
Standb -II mode
In standby-II m de extra cl ck buffers are active and m re current is used c mpared t standby-I m de.
Register values are maintained and the SPI can be activated during b th standby m des.
Rx Mode
The RX m de is an active m de where the nRF24L01+ radi is used as a receiver.
In RX m de the receiver dem dulates the signals fr m the RF channel, c nstantly presenting the dem dulated
data t the baseband pr t c l engine. The baseband pr t c l engine c nstantly searches f r a valid
packet. If a valid packet is f und (by a matching address and a valid CRC) the payl ad f the packet is presented

ant sl t in the RX FIFOs. If the RX FIFOs are full, the received packet is discarded.
The nRF24L01+ remains in RX m de until the MCU c nfigures it t standby-I m de r p wer d wn m de.
H wever, if the aut matic pr t c l features (Enhanced Sh ckBurst™) in the baseband pr t c l engine are
enabled, the nRF24L01+ can enter ther m des in rder t execute the pr t c l.
Tx Mode
The TX m de is an ctive m de f r transmitting packets.
The nRF24L01+ stays in TX m de until it finishes transmitting a packet. The status f the TX FIFO determines the next
acti n. If the TX FIFO is n t empty the nRF24L01+ remains in TX m de and transmits the next packet.
If the TX FIFO is empty the nRF24L01+ g es int standby-II m de. The nRF24L01+ transmitter PLL perates in pen
l p when in TX m de. It is imp rtant never t keep the nRF24L01+ in TX m de f r m re than 4ms at a time. If the
Enhanced Sh ckBurst™ features are enabled, nRF24L01+ is never in TX m de l nger than 4ms.
Air data rate:
The air data rate is the m dulated signaling rate the nRF24L01+ uses when transmitting and receiving
data. It can be 250kbps, 1Mbps r 2Mbps. Using l wer air data rate gives better receiver sensitivity than
higher air data rate. But, high air data rate gives l wer average current c nsumpti n and reduced pr bability
f n-air c llisi ns.
The air data rate is set by the RF_DR bit in the RF_SETUP register. A transmitter and a receiver must be
pr grammed with the same air data rate t c mmunicate with each ther.
nRF24L01+ is fully c mpatible with nRF24L01. F r c mpatibility with nRF2401A, nRF2402, nRF24E1, and
nRF24E2 the air data rate must be set t 250kbps r 1Mbps.
RF channel frequenc :
The RF channel frequency determines the center f the channel used by the nRF24L01+.
The channel ccupies a bandwidth f less than 1MHz at 250kbps and 1Mbps and a bandwidth f less than 2MHz at
2Mbps. nRF24L01+ can perate n frequencies fr m 2.400GHz t 2.525GHz.
For U.S. and Canada the allowed frequenc range is 2.400-2.483 GHz.
More technical informations are available in the section “Limitation of the single-modular transmitter (for U.S.
and Canada)”.
The pr gramming res luti n f the RF channel frequency setting is 1MHz.
At 2Mbps the channel ccupies a bandwidth wider than the res luti n f the RF channel frequency setting.
T ensure n n- verlapping channels in 2Mbps m de, the channel spacing must be 2MHz r m re. At
1Mbps and 250kbps the channel bandwidth is the same r l wer than the res luti n f the RF frequency.
Transmitter and a receiver must be br grammed with the same RF channel frequency t c mmunicate with
each ther.
