Radio Care
Proper radio usage and care ensure efficient operation and long-life of the product.
CAUTION: Use the radio according to the following recommendations and warnings.
• Your radio casing has a vent port for pressure equalization in the radio. Never poke this vent with
objects such as needles, tweezers, or screwdrivers. Poking the vent could create leak paths into the
radio and the radio submersibility will be lost.

• Never obstruct or cover the vent port, even with a label.
• Ensure that no oily substances come in contact with the vent port.
• Your radio is designed to be submerged to a maximum depth of six feet and maximum time of two
hours. Exceeding either maximum limit may result in damage to the radio.
• Elastomer seals used in portable radios age with time and environmental exposure. To ensure the
waterseal integrity of the radio, Motorola Solutions recommends that radios be checked annually
as a preventive measure. The disassembly, test, and reassembly procedures along with necessary
test equipment are available in the Service Manual.
• If the radio battery contacts are exposed to water without the battery attached, dry and clean the
radio battery contacts before attaching a battery to the radio. Turn the radio over with the battery
contact facing down and shake the radio so any trapped water can escape. A short circuit of the
contacts could occur if they are not dried properly.
• If the radio has been submerged in water, shake the radio to remove any water that is trapped
inside the speaker grille and microphone port. Otherwise, the water decreases the audio quality of
the radio.
• If an accessory is not attached to the radio, ensure that the accessory connector cover is attached
to the radio side accessory connector.
• If the radio is submerged or exposed to a high force water spray, such as from a hose, remove
the accessory or accessory connector cover immediately and ensure that no water is forced into
the accessory connector or radio interface. Rinse and dry the area and reattach the accessory or
accessory connector cover if leakage occurs.
• If the radio is exposed to a corrosive environment, such as salt water or corrosive gases or liquids,
rinse, and clean the radio immediately to prevent damage to radio materials, especially plated
surfaces. Remove the battery and the antenna before cleaning.
• Do not disassemble the radio as you could damage radio seals and result in leak paths into the
radio. Any radio maintenance should be performed only by a qualified radio technician.
• Only Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved service centers can open and service UL certified
radios. Opening or repairing at unauthorized locations invalidates hazardous location rating of the
radio.
• Do not pound, drop, or throw the radio unnecessarily.
• Turn off the radio when charging the radio using a wall-mounted charger. Otherwise, the Fall Alert
and Emergency may be accidentally triggered.
• When cleaning the radio, do not use a high-pressure jet spray as this may exceed the depth
pressure and cause water to leak into the radio.

Materials for Radio Washing
Procedure:
• Prepare the following material, apparatus, or equipment before you begin washing the radio and
its parts.
- A bucket of tap water (water height must be at least 2 inches higher than radio height).
- A bucket of 0.5% liquid detergent solution (1 teaspoon of recommended liquid detergent to
1 gallon of water or 1 part of recommended liquid detergent to 200 parts water; water height
must be at least 2 inches higher than radio height).
- A small brush.
- A toothbrush.
- Source of running water.
- Drying towel.

Washing The Radio
Procedure:
1Submerge the radio (with battery attached) completely into the tap water while shaking it for
approximately 20 seconds.
2Remove the radio from the water and perform the following. Turn the frequency knob all the way
from position 1 to 15 and back to position 1 twice.
aTurn the volume knob all the way from the minimum off position to its maximum volume
position and back twice.
bTurn the 3-Position A/B/C switch from A to C and back to A twice.
cSlide the Secure Switch back and forth twice. Dip the radio into the water one more time.

3Dip the radio completely into the detergent solution and repeat turning action for both knobs,
3-Position A/B/C and the Secure Switch.
4Lightly scrub the plastic area (front, back, bottom, top and side planes) of the radio with the
small brush.Take extra care around the Speaker Grill and Microphone port openings.
5Use the toothbrush to lightly brush the gaps at the base of the knobs and around the switches.
Take extra care around the Speaker Grill and Microphone port openings.
6Submerge the radio into tap water and shake it to remove the detergent.
7After removing the radio from the water, rinse the radio under running water to remove any
excess detergent. Take extra care to thoroughly rinse out any trapped detergent solution from
the speaker grill area.

8Shake off excess water and pat dry the radio with a dry towel. Take extra care to tap/shake out
any trapped water from the speaker grill area.

Washing the Battery
Procedure:
1Rinse the battery under running water to remove any excess debris.
2Using the small brush dipped in the detergent solution, lightly scrub the front, bottom and sides
of the battery.
3Use the toothbrush to brush the back and top of the battery. Exercise caution to avoid scratching
the battery contacts.
4Using the small brush, scrub the latches thoroughly to remove any accumulated deposits
between the latch and housing.
5Rinse the battery under running water to remove any excess detergent.

Washing the Universal Connector Cover
Procedure:
1Dip the universal connector cover into tap water followed by the detergent solution.
2Use your thumb or finger to lightly rub clean the rubber seal.
3Use the toothbrush to scrub off any dirt or foreign matter from the niches of the top catch and
thumb screw.
4Rinse the cover under running water to wash off the detergent.
5Pat dry with a towel.

Cleaning the External Surface of the Radio
Prerequisites:
CAUTION: Do not use solvents to clean your radio. Spirits may permanently damage the radio
housing.
Do not submerge the radio in detergent solution.
Procedure:
1Combine 1 teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent to 1 gallon of water (0.5% solution).

2Apply the solution sparingly with a stiff, non-metallic, short-bristled brush, ensuring that excess
detergent does not get entrapped near the connectors, controls, or crevices.
3Dry the radio thoroughly with a soft, absorbent, lint-free cloth.
4Ensure that no water remains entrapped near the connectors, cracks, or crevices.
