1 Safety Regulations
1.1 Correct Use
The M1 Repeater, in this manual also referred to as device, extends wireless transmissions over longer distances
between the MSA HUB and the breathing apparatus (BA) using Long Range Radio (LRR) connectivity. It is battery
powered and can be used as a system of up to four devices. Strategically placed repeaters at an incident site can
minimize the risk of transmission loss by repeating the signal.
It is imperative that this operating manual be read and observed when using the device. In particular, the safety
instructions, as well as the information for the use and operation of the device, must be carefully read and observed.
Furthermore, the national regulations applicable in the user's country must be taken into account for a safe use.
WARNING!
Read this manual carefully before using the device. The device will perform as designed only if it is used and
maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Otherwise, it could fail to perform as designed and
persons who rely on this device could sustain serious personal injury or death.
Before use the product operability must be verified. The product must not be used if the function test is unsuccessful,
it is damaged, a competent servicing/maintenance has not been made, genuine MSA spare parts have not been
used.
Failure to follow this warning can result in serious personal injury or death.
WARNING!
• Risk of Explosion: Do not remove or replace batteries or charge the device where an explosive atmosphere may
be present.
• Do not alter or modify the device.
• Before using the device, operation must be verified. The device must not be used if it is damaged.
• Repair or alteration of the device beyond the procedures described in this manual or by anyone other than a
person authorized by MSA could cause the unit to fail to perform properly. Use only genuine MSA replacement
parts when performing any maintenance procedures described in this manual. Substitution of components can
seriously impair performance of the unit, alter intrinsic safety characteristics, or void agency approvals.
• Wireless operation is dependent upon signal availability of the wireless service(s) necessary to maintain the
communication link. Loss of wireless signal will prevent communication of alarms and other information to linked
devices. Take appropriate precautions in the event a loss of wireless signal occurs.
• Introduction of obstructions (for example vehicles or other equipment) after deployment can prevent connection
to the network. Selection of device's location and worksite controls must be used to prevent introduction of
obstructions.
• When radio connection is lost between the HUB and the BA set, the Entry Control Board displays estimated
information. Follow local rules to interact with the monitored BA wearers for status updates.
Failure to follow these warnings can result in serious personal injury or death.
Alternative use, or use outside this specification will be considered as non-compliance. This also applies especially
to unauthorized alterations to the product and to commissioning work that has not been carried out by MSA or
authorized persons.
1.2 Liability Information
MSA accepts no liability in cases where the device has been used inappropriately or not as intended. The selection
and use of the device are the exclusive responsibility of the individual operator.
4
GB 1 Safety Regulations

Product liability claims, warranties and guarantees made by MSA with respect to the device are voided, if it is not
used, serviced or maintained in accordance with the instructions in this manual.
1.3 Warranty
Local rules apply.
For any additional information relative to use or repair, call 1-877-MSA-FIRE (1-877-672-3473) during regular

2.5 Multiple Repeaters
The system is capable of four repeaters to be placed in strategic locations for optimal performance.
Strategic locations for repeaters are, e.g.:
• Entrance area of a building
• Top of the basement staircase
• Bottom of a staircase
• Sharp corner in a corridor or a tunnel
• Where the M1 Control Module loses radio connection to the hub (see M1 Control Module operating
manual on the product page at www.MSAsafety.com)
Make sure that minimum one repeater is within the range of the HUB. In case of poor or loss of connection a repeater
must be placed. For more information on signal reception see Entry Control Board operating manual on the product
page at www.MSAsafety.com.
System capability to repeat SCBAs:
Repeater position 1 :up to 18 x M1 Control Modules
Repeater position 2 :up to 14 x M1 Control Modules
Repeater position 3 :up to 10 x M1 Control Modules
Repeater position 4 :up to 6 x M1 Control Modules
With the number of repeated devices the bandwidth of the system might be reduced.
NOTE: Logon/logoff is only possible directly at the Enty Control Board.

To remove battery, reverse the above installation procedure.
3.3 Battery Charging
Use the M1 Control Module charging adapter set, the SCBA truck charger or the Multi-Bay charger (→ 11 Ordering
Information).
For battery status condition see section 2.4 LED Status.
10
GB 3 Before Use

WARNING!
• Risk of Explosion: Do not charge the device where an explosive atmosphere may be present.
• Only use the battery charger and included cables provided by MSA for charging the battery. Do not use damaged
cables.
• Risk of fire and short circuit! Do not short-circuit the battery charger. Do not operate the battery charger with
polarities reversed. Only use approved fuses.
• The charger contains a magnet. Magnets can have an adverse effect on medical devices such as pacemakers,
implantable cardio defibrillators (ICD) and other implantable medical devices. Persons with such devices should
maintain sufficient distance between the medical device and the magnet. Please consult your physician or
pacemaker or ICD manufacturer for additional guidance and recommendations.
• Only charge M1 Battery Pack with the designated M1 CM battery chargers inside the Repeater or outside the
Repeater with the Universal Multi-Bay Charger with the power supplies provided by MSA at the time of purchase.
• Do not use a rechargeable battery charging system, which includes M1 CM battery chargers or Universal Multi-
Bay Charger, power supply and power cords, if any component of the system shows damage. Replace the
components if they show cracks or distortion, or if the cord shows damage or wear.
• Keep batteries and related device charging system dry.
• Do not disassemble, repair, or alter charging system.
• Do not immerse in water or other liquids.
• Do not expose the rechargeable battery or charging system to high temperature or heating equipment including,
but not limited to, direct sunlight and water heaters. Overheating may cause an explosion.
• Do not drop, crush or puncture the rechargeable battery or charging system. Damage from such occurrences can
lead to short-circuit and overheating of the equipment.
• Do not dispose of batteries in a fire. Batteries can explode. Dispose of in accordance with local regulations and
requirements.
• Do not replace the battery with another type of battery. Use only M1 Battery Pack. Use of an incorrect battery type
creates a risk of explosion.
• Do not use a rechargeable battery pack that shows signs of damage such as bulging, swelling, leaking fluid, a
cracked housing, or broken contacts.
• Do not attempt to open the housing of the rechargeable battery pack. The rechargeable battery pack does not
have replaceable cells.
• The repeater must be clean and dry prior to removal of the battery to prevent moisture or contaminants from
entering the electrical connector area resulting in intermittent or unexpected loss of power to the device.
Failure to follow these warnings can result in serious personal injury or death.
NOTICE
• Charge the battery completely before first use.
• Charge the battery only when device is turned off.
• If the battery is detected as empty by device, charge it promptly.
• Charge the battery in a temperature range between +5°C to +40°C.
• Charge the battery completely if it is stored for more than 2 months.
• Avoid short circuits between the electronic contacts of the battery pack.
• Never use or charge batteries which are visibly damaged.
