General Appraisal
The Muratec F-560, a competitively priced 20-ppm fax-centric multifunctional device, was a stand-
out performer in BLI’s tests. Offering good print output quality, very good productivity and superior
ease of use and multitasking capabilities, this LED-based model also proved very reliable. The unit
completed BLI’s two-month evaluation, which included a 23,000-impression durability test, without
any malfunctions or misfeeds. Indeed, the durability test for the F-560 was among the longest for a fax-
centric product.
Offering standard faxing (walk up, network, PC and Internet), convenience copying, PC and network
printing and scanning, the Muratec F-560 is distinguished from other tested models in this class by its
superior ease of use. For example, the F-560 is one of the few fax-based MFPs to offer a touchscreen,
which minimizes the number of buttons present on the control panel and makes it easy to use the
standard Network Gateway Platform scanning system. For example, the touchscreen allows users to add
unique file names to each scanned document, quickly search the file tree for destinations when scanning
to network folders and enter e-mail addresses for scan to e-mail transmissions. In addition, the unit
supports LDAP, which enables direct access over the network from the control panel to e-mail addresses
and fax numbers residing on the corporate mail server. Removing and replacing the toner cartridge,
which includes toner and drum, was also easy.

Also setting the F-560 apart from its competitors is the device's ability to reserve a copy job while
another copy job or a print job is in progress. In addition, as mentioned above, the device offers
Muratec's Network Gateway Platform, which enables scanning to network folders, with up to 20
custom folder shortcuts available; scan to e-mail, with the ability to attach any document stored
on the network to an outgoing transmission and a choice of file formats including TIFF, PDF and
JPEG; and scan to FTP, with up to 20 custom FTP shortcuts. Moreover, the unit offers standard
color scanning.
While a GDI driver is standard, the Muratec F-560 was tested with the optional PCL 6 driver. Featuring
600-x-600-dpi resolution, the unit offers good overall print output quality. The unit comes with 16
MB of dedicated print memory, which can be upgraded to 512 MB, the second highest maximum
memory capacity for current models. It also demonstrated very good productivity, with a first-copy
time that is among the fastest and a first-print time that is faster than the average for tested models.
The F-560’s fax scan-to-memory speed is competitive with that of other high-volume units and
among the fastest for units in all volume classes tested. Fax features include a 33.6-Kbps modem
with JBIG compression, 8 MB of standard memory, a maximum capacity of 40 MB, and 300 autodial
destinations (2,000 entries at maximum memory capacity). Other fax features include fax/e-mail
broadcasts, fax forwarding from the machine or the embedded Web page and the ability to block
junk faxes from up to 50 locations. An optional second fax line (33.6 Kbps) is available, enabling
simultaneous fax transmissions and/or receptions and effectively doubling capacity.

Advantages
• The F-560's first-copy and first-print times are faster than the average for tested models.
• Scan speed is competitive when compared to other high-volume units tested and faster
than the average when compared to models in all volume classes tested.
• Unlike most fax-centric units tested to date, the F-560 enables users to reserve a copy
job while another copy job or a print job is in progress.
• Duplex faxing, copying and printing is standard.
• Scanning to network folders, e-mail and FTP sites is standard.
• Color scanning is standard.
• Toner yield is substantially higher than the average for units tested. In fact, only a handful
of other units have higher yields.
• The automatic document feeder's capacity (80 sheets) is higher than the average for
competitive models.
Disadvantages
• The unit's maximum paper capacity (1,050 sheets) is below the average for competitive
models.
• Text and line art in copy mode received “Fair” ratings.

Pricing Analysis
BLI’s suggested retail pricing analysis showed that the Muratec F-560 is priced competitively with
similar models (high-volume, laser and LED units with a 33.6-Kbps modem in the 15- to 25-ppm speed
range). Supplies cost per page could not be calculated because pricing is set by dealers.
Summary
Because of its outstanding overall performance, including excellent ease of use, exceptional multi-
tasking, good print output quality and impressive reliability, BLI highly recommends the Muratec
F-560 for users in need of a multifunctional device with fax, copy, print and scan capabilities for
monthly volumes of up to 10,000 impressions.

The Muratec F-560 is very user friendly. The
control panel, which incorporates a large touch-
screen display, is well laid out, with dedicated
keys for copy, scan and fax functions that il-
luminate when the function is in use. The unit
supports LDAP, which enables direct access over
the network from the control panel to e-mail ad-
dresses or fax numbers residing on the corporate
mail server. Also contributing to ease of use is a

Output produced by the Muratec F-560 at
600-x-600-dpi resolution was good overall. There
was little toner spray, which gave text a clean ap-
pearance. Line art was good overall, with slight
stair-stepping, but thin lines on dark backgrounds
were not clearly defined. While halftone coverage
within levels was good overall, it was somewhat
grainy. Grayscale was clearly visible over a good
range with distinct transitions between levels.
Print speed is tested using BLI’s
Test Original (with 6% page
coverage). The test page is printed
in a quantity equal to double the
vendor’s rated print speed for the
device in each mode tested (e.g.,
if the vendor’s rated print speed
is 20 ppm, 40 pages are printed).
The Muratec F-560’s print speeds
were tested at 600 dpi using the
PCL driver.
Halftone range:
Clearly visible from 1% to 85% dot-fill levels
with distinct transitions between levels.

Job Stream Evaluation
A job stream consisting of nine files (a mix of Word,
Excel, HTML, PowerPoint and e-mail) is sent to a
paused print queue. All files are monochrome or
mixed color and monochrome, and five pages or
less in length (total of 19 pages). Timing begins
when the queue is released and ends when the last
page of the job stream exits the device.
