GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheMVPICON®pH/TemperatureProbeissemi‐conductor
designedforgeneralpurposepHmeasurementofliquidsor
semi‐solidsrangingfrom0–14pH.Temperature
measurements,rangingfrom0–80°C,maybetaken
simultaneously.Theprobefeaturesasilver/silverchloride/
potassiumchloridereferencesystemandathermistorwith
automatictemperaturecompensation.Solid‐state
componentrybuiltintotheMVPICONinstrumentcontrols
thissensingelement.TheMVPICONpH/Temperature
ProbeisdesignedforusewiththeMVPICONinstrument
only.Anyothercombinationmightcauselossof
performanceorirreversibledamagetobothprobeand
instrument.

andasoftbristlebrushforcleaningthesensoronthetip.
TESTPROCEDURE
A. UsingtheMVPICONpH/TemperatureProbe
Note:TheMVPICONpH/TemperatureProbemustbe
calibratedforpHpriortofirstuse.SeeB.Calibrationfor
pHfordetails.
(a) Removeandsavetheprotectioncaportubefromthe
probetippriortouse.
Note:Referencegelmaybeobservedasaviscous
materialonthetipoftheprobe.Somegelseepagefrom
anewprobeisnormalandwillnotaffectthelongevity
orperformanceoftheprobe.
(b) Priortoeachdayofuse,scrubtheprobetipwithasoft
bristledbrush(included)anddeionizedwatertoremove
possibleresidues.Useamilddetergentifrequired.
(c) Iftheprobehasnotbeenusedfor2ormoredays,clean
asabove,soaktipinsaturatedKCI(potassiumchloride)
solution(seeOPERATINGTIPS)for10‐15min,then
soakinpH7.00orpH4.00bufferforatleast10min.
(d) EnsuretheprobeissecurelyconnectedtotheMVPICON
instrumentbyinsertingtheprobe’sconnectorwiththe
arrowsfacingtowardthebackoftheinstrumentandthe
whitecircularstickerfacingthefront.Insertprobeinto
thesample.FollowinstructionsontheMVPICONto
completereading.BothpHandtemperaturereadings
willbedisplayedontheinstrumentscreen.
Note:Todisconnecttheprobe,squeezebothsidesof
theconnectorwhileunpluggingfromtheMVPICON.
(e) WhenusingtheMVPICONpH/Temperatureprobewith
semi‐solids,insertprobesothatbothsensorandporous
whiteplugonoppositesideofprobetiparecontacting
orimmersedinthesample.Rotatelefttorightseveral
timesandtilttoensureconstantcontactwiththe
sample.
(f) Toensurecorrectmeasurementvalues,samplesor
buffersshouldbemixedwell.Thismaybedoneusinga
magneticstirrerorbygentlystirringtheprobeinthe
sampleforatleast5sec.Youmaycontinuetostirwhile
thereadingistakingplace.
(g) Theprobeshouldberinsedthoroughlywithdeionized
waterandblotteddrybetweensamples.
B. CalibrationforpH
TheMPVICONpH/TemperatureProbefeaturesa3‐point
calibrationusingpH7.00,thenpH10.00,andfinallypH4.00
buffersolutions.
Note:Useaborate‐basedpH10.00buffer(notacarbonate
basedbuffer)toensurearobustcalibrationslopeforpH
valuesabove7.00.
Note:InordertoperformaccuratepHmeasurements,the
MVPICONpH/TemperatureProbemustbecalibrateddaily
priortouse,orwhenusingadifferentMVPICONpH/
TemperatureProbe.
(a) RinsetheMVPICONpH/TemperatureProbewith
deionizedwater.SoakprobeinfreshpH7.00bufferfor
atleast2minpriortocalibration.
(b) FromtheMVPICON,enterpHmode,pressDevice,then
pressCalibration.
(c) InserttheprobeintopH7.00buffertobegin.Repeat
withfreshpH10.00andpH4.00bufferswhenprompted
ontheMVPICONscreen.Ensurebuffersarewellmixed.
(d) Rinseprobewithdeionizedwaterandblotdrybetween
buffers.
C. CalibrationforTemperature
TheMVPICONpH/TemperatureProbeusesafactory‐
calibratedthermistor.Itonlyneedstobere‐calibratedifit
hasbeenusedtomeasuretemperatures20°Caboveor
belowroomtemperature.Theprobefeaturesasingle‐point
calibrationthatcanbedoneatanyknowntemperature
withintheoperatingrange.
Note:Thecalibrationismostaccuratewhenusingaknown
temperatureclosetothesampletemperaturerange.

STORAGE
Cleanprobethoroughlywithwater,asoftbristledbrush
(included),andamilddetergentsolution.Rinsewith
deionizedwater.Leave1‐2dropsofdeionizedwaterinthe
blackprotectivecaporclearprotectivetube,thencover
probetiptopreventdehydrationofthereferenceelectrode
andallowforfasterstart‐uptimes.
WARNING:DONOTIMMERSEPROBEINANYSOLUTIONS
WHENSTORING!
Forolderprobesthatusetheprotectivetube,slidethescrew
capontotheprobebodyfollowedbythesealingO‐ring.
Insertprobetipintoprotectivetube,thenslidescrewcap
andO‐ringdownontotherimoftheprotectivetube.Slightly
pressthecapdownandonlythentightenthescrewcap.
Storeprobeinoriginalpackagingwhennotinuse.
PRECAUTIONS
TheMVPICONpH/TemperatureProbeisruggedand
durableandrequireslittlemaintenance.Toensure
lastingperformance,readandfollowalloperating
guidelines.
AvoidprolongedexposureinsamplescontainingTrisor
proteins.Trisbuffersandsamplescontainingproteins
shouldbereadquicklyandtheprobeshouldberinsed
thoroughlywithdeionizedwaterbetweensamples.
Whentestingiscomplete,cleanwithwateranda
laboratorydetergentandrinsewithdeionizedwater.
Avoidprolongedexposureinsamplesateitherendof
thepHrange.Whenunavoidable,rinsewithample
waterbetweensamples.Rinsewithneutralizingagents
anddeionizedwateraftercompletionandpriorto
storage.
Avoidprolongedexposuretoextremetemperatures.
Above50°C,limitprobeexposuretotheminimumtime
neededtoobtainastablereading.Donotusethe
probeoutsidethespecifiedtemperaturerange(see
SPECIFICATIONS)asthismightresultinprobe
performancefailureorirreversibledamage.
Samplesmustbeaqueousliquidsorsemi‐solidsand
compatiblewiththeprobe’swettedmaterials.
TheusefullifeoftheMVPICONpH/Temperature
Probeisdeterminedbythefrequencyandtypeof
samplestestedandthelevelofcleaningbetweenuses.
Ifinformationisrequiredregardingthechemical
resistanceoftheprobe,contactBioControl.
OPERATINGTIPS
TopreparesaturatedKCI(potassiumchloride)solution,add
KCIgranulestodistilledwateruntilnomorewilldissolve.
Adding38gofKCIto100mLwaterissufficient.Letsolution
standforatleast2hrsanddecanttheclearsolution.Useas
describedabove.
Toensurecorrectmeasurementvalues,mixsamplesor
bufferswell.
Proteins,fats,andoilsmayberemovedbygentlyscrubbing
inasolutionofTerg‐A‐Zyme(AlconoxCompany),apepsin
solution,orsimilarproduct.Afterwards,rinsethoroughly
withdeionizedwater.Cleaningagentsareavailablefrom
yourlaboratorysupplyvendor.
Whentestingindirectsunlightoronabrightreflecting
surface,usebrown,opaque,orshielded‐samplecontainers.
Verybrightlightmayaffectsensorperformance.
Forbestresults,usebuffersthathavealreadybeen
reconstituted(notpowderedtabletsorpackets).Alsouse
bufferswithspecifiedvaluesof4.00,7.00,and10.00(each
±0.02)at25°C.Useaborate‐basedpH10.00buffer.
Buffer‐handling:pH7.00buffers(phosphate‐based)andpH
4.00buffers(biphthalate‐based)arelesssusceptibleto
carbondioxidecontamination(fromexposuretoair)thanpH
10.00buffers(borateorcarbonate‐based).Keepbuffers
sealedwhennotinuse.Inabilitytocalibrateprobeusually
indicatesafailingprobeoracontaminatedbuffer.Try
calibratingwithfreshbuffersfirst.
Bestresultsareobtainedbystirringtheprobeinthesolution
for1minbeforecalibratingortakingareading,then
continuingtostirwhilereadingisbeingtaken.

ofthereading,slowcalibration,probewillnotcalibrate,or
pHvaluedoesn’tchangeasexpectedwhenchanging
sample—cleanprobe(seeSTORAGE),soaktipinhot(40°C)
tapwaterfor5–10min,blotdry,thensoaktipina
saturatedKCl(potassiumchloride)solution(seeOPERATING
TIPS)atroomtemperaturefor10‐15min.

WARRANTY
BioControlSystems,Inc.(BCS)warrantsthisproducttobefreefromdefectsin
materialsandworkmanship,whenstoredunderlabeledconditionsandused
asintended,for6monthsfromdateofpurchase.BCSagreesduringthe
applicablewarrantyperiodtoreplacealldefectiveproductsafterreturnto
BCS.BCSshallnothaveobligationunderthisLimitedWarrantytomake
replacementswhichresult,inwholeorinpart,fromnegligenceoftheBuyer,
