TheNakamichi520incorporatesiargecapacitances.itis
verydangeroustoaccessthecapacitorfora durationof
about3 minutesafterihepowerswitchhasbeenturned
offbecauseofincompietedischarging.Useextremecare
whenaccessingthecapacitorforrepairpurposes.
Nevershortthecapacitorterminalswithascrewdriverora
similartoolafterthepowerswitchisturnedoff,withan
attempttodischargingthecapacitor.(Shortingtheter-
minalinsucha waycanmeittheshortedpointleadingto
ahole,andwillgiveadverseeffectsonthecapacitor
itself.)

Thepowertransformierused in the620is of a troidai
type. Generally, a troidaitransformer is attacked by large
rushcurrentwhen the powerswitch is turnedon. Forthe
620, suchrushcurrent is reduced by suppiyinginput
voltage tothe primary of the transformer viaa resistor
(6.8f2, 10 watts)onlyduring the time of approx. 20 msec
when the powerswitch is turnedon,andthen by shorting
theresistance ata relaycontact and suppiying the input
voltagedirectly to the transformerprimary.
A130"Cthermalfuse is containedwithin the transformer
andprotects it fromunusualheating.
lf the fuse is blown, it is necessary to replace the trans-
formeritself.
2.2.PowerBlockPre-stage
Refer to Fig. 2.2.
As allthe Outputstageconsists of emitter-followers, the
voltagegain is 1. Therefore, the gainrequired for power
amplifier andNFB is obtained at thepre-stage.Generally,
anincrease in the number of transistorstages of an ampli-
fiercircuitincreasesdistortion and phaseshift. In large
currentamplification as seenwith a poweramplifier, a
certainextent of distortioncannotbeavoidedandshould
belimitedthroughuse of NFB.However,excessive NFB is
likely to causeunstableamplification asa result of phase
shift in the amplifier or differences in Soudspeaker im-
pedance.This is one of thedrawbacksinherent toanNFB
amplifier.
Thepoweramplifierused in the620 employs 8 tran-
sistors, of whichonly two serve for voltageamplification
and the remaining sixare used to provide the former two
with the bestoperatingconditions. A gain of approx.
100dB is obtainedthroughthese two transistors to per-
formpoweramplification and NFB. The amplifier of this
configurationassuresstable NFB with !ow noise and Iow
distortionandwithlittlephaseshift.
Q001 and Q007 are for voltageamplification;Q002 and
Q003form a currentmirrorcircuit (the samecurrent at
bothcollectors);Q005 and Q008provide a constant-cur-
rentsource;Q006 isfor impedanceconversion(emitter-
follower);Q004 andQ001 make up a differentialampli-
fiercircuit.Thus,stable NFB is appliedthrough a
circuitryusingthesetransistors.
C005determines the high-bandcharacteristic of the volt-
ageamplifier to prevent NFB frombecomingunstable
because of unbalancedPerformance.R016 is a resistor for
NFB.

2.3. PowerBlockOutputStage
In the Nakamichi 620,for making a biasvoltage,Varistor
used *inthe conventionaldesign of amplifier is replaced
withtransistorbase-emitter so that the620 design im-
provesbiasstabiIity(againsttemperature or current
changes)withIowerdistortion.
Especially fora class B push-pullamplifier,distortion
cannot be reducedunless the positive and negativesignal
amplifiers are wellbalanced. The amplifier inthe620,
however, is bestbalancedthanks tothe vertically and
horizontallySymmetrieconfiguration as shown inFig.
2.3. Thiscireuitallowsdistortion of only0.1% at1KHz
100wattsOutputevenwithout NFB. Thisdegree of
distortion isIow enough to make the amplifierused asa
high-fidel ityuniteven ifitis given noNFB.
Fig. 2.4 showsthat a change in currentflowingacross the
diodevaries the terminalvoltage and that ED changeswith
signalcurrent.Thesechangesresult inthe generation of
distortion. Itisa matter of coursethatsignalcurrent
flowingacross the diodewillproducedistortion. SeeFig.
2.3. TransistorsQ009, Q011,Q010andQ012 that
generatebiasvoltageform an emitter-followercireuit of
class A Operation.Thusthiscireuitdoes not induce
distortedSignals.
Unlesscorrectedperfectlyagainsttemperatures, the bias
voltage of poweramplifiers inthe class B amplifierwill
increasedistortion atIow temperature or becomeunstable
athightemperature. !tmay safely be saidthattempera-
turecompensation ofa transistor canbe moreproperly
andeffectivelycarried outbythe transistor ofthe same
strueturethana diode.
For an ordinaryclass B amplifier,crossoverdistortion is
reduced by increasingidlingcurrentthusoverlapping the
operatingranges ofthe positive and negativetransistors.
Theoverlapportionacts as aclass A amplifier.Generally,
thedegree of amplificationdecreaseswherea changetakes
placefromclass A toB andno linearcurve is obtained as
shown inFig.2.5(A). However, ifthe cireuitshown in
Fig. 2.3is current-driven, a linearcurve canbe obtained
at the point of changefromclass A toB asshown inFig.

2.4.PeakPowerIndicator

gramandtimechartofthepeakpowerindicator.This
circuitSwitchesthepeakpowerindicatorofR-channelor
L-channeltoredorgreendependingupontheOutput
power.level.
TheLOWandHIGHpowerindicatorthreshoid selectors
locatedontherearpanelofthe620select 1/5/25 watts
and25/50/Max.wattspowerlevels,respectively.The
greeniampglowsforoutputpowerlevelsof 1,5,25 watts
(LOW)ormore,whiletheredIampglowsforoutput
powerleveisof25,50orMax.watts(HIGH).(Ref.8^

indicatedpowerlevelsbytwo.)
Thegreeniampremainsoffwhiletheredlampison.if
bothswitchesaresetfor25watts,thepeakpower indi-

4. READJUSTMENTOFPOWERBLOCK
The620usesnosemi-fixedpartstoenhancereliability.As
longas all partsmeetthespecification,thepublished
characteristicscan be obtainedwithoutreadjustment.
Generally,noreadjustmentisrequired if onlydefective
partsarereplacedatrepair.
Observethefollowingprecautionswhenrepairingdefec-
tiveparts:

todecreasetheresistancebetweenGNDterminals.
If a newsemiconductor is installedinthepower

imperfectbalancecancauselargerdistortionorun-
wantedoscillation.

Describedherearethepossiblecausesfordefects

30mA. Ifit isIower,thedistortionat1 watt
willincrease.Insucha case,solderadditional

Sometimes,oscillationcannotbeobserved
evenon a synchroscope ifit invoivesfre-
quenciesashighasseveralMHz.Osciilation
mayhaveoccurred if thedistortion is large
thoughtheexternaloperatingvoltageremains
normal. TrythefollowingStepstoeliminate
oscillation:
