ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Simply follow these instructions to assemble your National Geographic
metal detector and get started hunting for treasure!
STEP 1. Slide the armrest into the back of the handle assembly so that it
sits flush with the handle.
STEP 2. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew the cover of the
battery compartment, located on the underside of the handle assembly.
Insert 3 AA 1.5V batteries (not included), making sure that they line up
with the positive and negative indicators. Then screw the compartment
cover back on.

STEP 3. Loosen coil knob and fold out the search coil until it angles away
from the shaft.
STEP 4. Turn the shaft nut clockwise to release the telescoping shaft. Do
not extend the shaft past the line indicating the maximum length. Fix the
shaft in place by turning the knob counterclockwise.
STEP 5. Adjust the search coil so that it is parallel to the ground and
tighten the coil knob to keep it in the desired position.
When properly adjusted the coil will sit a few inches above the ground
when you have your arm in the armrest.

1. POWER ON
Switch your detector on by turning the
volume dial clockwise until the LED
light comes on.
2. BEGIN TREASURE HUNTING
Swing the coil above the ground in a side-to-side movement.
The detector will beep and the LED indicator will flash when a
metal object is found.
DETECTING HEIGHT Keep the coil 1–2
inches (2.5–5 cm) above the ground
when detecting.
SPEED An average swing speed is
1–2 seconds from side to side.

SWINGING PATTERN When swinging
the detector, slightly overlap each
swing to ensure areas are not missed.

ADJUSTMENT The detector should be
held straight with your forearm placed
on the armrest.
DISCOVERY When a target is found,
the detector will both beep and flash
the LED indicator.
SENSITIVITY Turn the sensitivity dial
to adjust your detector’s sensitivity.
Increase sensitivity (clockwise) for
more detecting depth. You may need to
decrease sensitivity (counterclockwise)
if there is high electrical interference or
if you get many false signals.

VOLUME Turn the volume dial clock-
wise to increase or counterclockwise to
decrease the volume of your detector’s
signal.
BATTERY When turned on, the LED
indicator will show solid blue. If it is
red, the battery level is low. If the LED
does not come on when you turn the
power on, the batteries are depleted
and should be replaced, following the
safety instructions.

BATTERY SAFETY INFORMATION
• Battery installation and removal should be performed by an adult.
• Use only batteries recommended in this instruction guide.
• Be careful to install the batteries with the correct polarity as indicated.
• Do not mix old and new batteries.
• Remove all batteries when replacing.
• Do not mix alkaline, standard, rechargeable, or different types of
batteries.
• Different types of batteries or new and used batteries are not to
be mixed.
• Non-rechargeable batteries are not to be recharged.
• Rechargeable batteries are to be removed from the detector before
being charged.
• Rechargeable batteries are only to be charged under adult supervision.
• Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to
be used.
• The supply terminals are not to be short- circuited.
• Remove exhausted batteries.
• CAUTION: Do not dispose of battery in fire. Battery may explode or leak.
OTHER SAFETY INFORMATION
• WARNING: This device contains moving parts. Use caution
when adjusting components. DO NOT lean on detector when in
use as it is not designed to support your weight.
• WARNING: Any changes or modications could void the user’s
authority to operate this equipment.
• The coil is waterproof, but the entire
device is not intended for underwater
use. Please DO NOT submerge.

items to their owners if you
can, and resist the urge to sell
artifacts to private collectors.

archaeology. If you find items
of historical significance, stop
digging and call your local
historical or archaeological
society before disrupting the
site.

LEARNING GUIDE
Invention and Refinement
The earliest metal detectors were large and inefficient, but
by the 1920s portable versions of the machines began to
appear. The first portable metal detector patent was issued
in 1925, and three years later the American businessman
Shirl Herr patented a device that could detect metals buried
as deep as eight feet.
COOL SCIENCE FACT:
In 1974 hobbyist Roy Lloyd discovered a high school class ring from
1926 inscribed with the initials “M.B.” After doing some research he
reunited the ring with its owner, Miles Baker, who had lost it off a pier
in Lake Johnson, Florida, nearly a half century earlier.

These instruments proved their worth when Admiral Byrd
used them in Antarctica to locate materials left behind
by earlier expeditions. Over the next several decades
technological improvements turned the metal detector into a
practical device for hobbyists. Batteries got smaller, circuits
got better, and the whole machine got lighter and smaller
as transistors replaced clunky vacuum tubes. Additional
refinements enabled metal detectors to work underwater
and to distinguish between different metals. Some detectors
can be immersed as deep as 200 feet underwater for
detecting the sea bed, and some even have built-in GPS.
