Neater Straw Mover User manual

- 2 -
Description
The Neater Straw Mover has been developed for people who find it difficult to use a conventional cup or
straw and allows people the option to independently move a flexible straw away from their face.
A remote switch is pressed by the user to bring the straw to and from their mouth.
Any device such as this has the potential to cause choking. For this reason, it is only recommended for
use by each individual after an assessment by a Speech and Language Therapist.
The Neater Straw Mover enables people to drink liquids when they want to. It can be used in combination
with the Neater Power Drinker which pumps liquid or pureed food.
Safety
•Read all instructions carefully before use and particularly before making any adjustments. Incorrect
use and adjustment could damage the unit and/or make its use dangerous in some way.
•The Neater Straw Mover should only be used for drinking consumable liquids.
•It should not be used by people with swallowing difficulties or who are liable to choke, except under
the supervision of a trained Speech and Language Therapist.
•Drinks should not be scalding hot.
•Your mouth should always be higher than the mug or siphoning can occur and cause choking.
•Clean all parts before use - especially the flexible tubing and check that no cracks have appeared in
the tubing.
•Take care not to stick the straw in your eye or into the back of your throat.
•The switches supplied should only be used with the unit.
•Repeated bending of the wire in the same place can cause it to break

and DO NOT pull hard on the
bendy arm as this can damage it.
To Use
1. Ensure the device is securely clamped to a table or to a wheelchair attachment (available separately).
2. Clip the bendy straw into the straw clip (A). Use Velcro to assist holding the straw.
3. Plug the external switch (D) in to the socket (H).
4. Press the external switch (D) to move the straw one way. When you press it again, the straw will
move in the opposite direction. When the straw is moving the movement LEDs (C) will light up,
alternating red and green.
5. Twist the lower ring of the bendy arm holder (B) clockwise to increase the range of movement, or
anticlockwise to reduce it. Adjust this when the straw clip is in the clockwise position. Adjust as
necessary to get the right range for you.
6. Move the straw head to a comfortable mouth position.
NB: If one of the movement LEDs (C) is lit but the device is not moving, something is stuck. Unplug the
external switch (D) and contact the supplier.
Troubleshooting
•If one of the movement LEDs (C) is lit but the device is not moving, something is stuck. Ensure there
are no obstructions. Unplug the external switch (D), charge it fully and then try again. If this doesn’t
solve the problem, contact the supplier.
•If the unit becomes slow or does not move the battery needs to be charged.
•If the charger is plugged in but the charging LED (G) is not lit, the battery may be very flat. Try waiting
for half an hour. If it remains unlit, the battery may need replacing, this is standard for lithium ion
batteries which have an expected life of 3 years. A new battery pack and replacement service is from
your Neater supplier.
