Preface
This manual contains technical information for servicing NEC PowerMate eco™ microdesktop
computers sold by NEC Solutions (America), Inc.
The manual contains hardware and interface information for those who need an overview of the
system design. The manual includes system setup and configuration information, disassembly
procedures, an illustrated parts list, maintenance information, and troubleshooting procedures.
The manual is prepared for NEC Solutions (America), Inc.-trained customer engineers, service
center staff, and depot repair personnel.
The content of this manual is organized as follows.
 Chapter 1, “System Overview,” provides an overview of system features and includes brief
descriptions of system components.
 Chapter 2, “Setup and Configuration,” includes information for getting the system up and
running, setting system board jumpers, and using the BIOS Setup utility to configure the
system hardware. The chapter also contains information for using the BIOS FLASH utility,
PowerMate eco Application and Driver CD, and PowerMate eco Product Recovery CD.
 Chapter 3, “Disassembly and Reassembly,” provides system disassembly and reassembly
procedures. Each procedure is supported by disassembly illustrations.
 Chapter 4, “Board Layouts,” contains information about the boards in the system.
Illustrations show connector and socket locations on each board and callouts identify the
features on the board.
 Chapter 5, “Illustrated Parts Breakdown,” includes a parts list for replaceable parts and an
illustrated parts breakdown diagram.
 Chapter 6, “Preventive Maintenance,” provides recommended maintenance information for
maintaining the system in top condition.
 Chapter 7, “Troubleshooting,” includes information to help isolate and repair system
malfunctions.
 Chapter 8, “Services and Support,” lists contact information for the services and support

This chapter provides an overview of the NEC PowerMate eco™ system and includes
descriptions of:
 system hardware
 front, rear, and side features
 internal components
 software features
 security features.
Product Description
The NEC PowerMate eco is a microdesktop computer featuring a space-saving “boxless”
design. Most system components are built into the liquid crystal display (LCD) unit. Some
components are integrated in the base of the system.
Based on the low-power Transmeta™5800 (TM5800) Crusoe™ processor, the PowerMate eco
runs cool and requires no fan. System operation is very quiet. The boxless system includes the
flat-screen monitor/base system, a USB keyboard, and a USB mouse. The following figure
shows the main system components.

The PowerMate eco features a 15-inch high-resolution thin-film transistor (TFT) display, a
Crusoe 900-MHz or higher processor, 256 MB of random access memory (RAM), a hard drive,
an optical drive (CD-ROM or combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive), and built-in stereo
speakers.
The monitor can tilt up 35 degrees, tilt down 5 degrees, and swivel 80 degrees in each direction
for an optimum viewing angle.
Externally, the PowerMate eco offers a wide choice of ports and connectivity, such as two PC
Card slots, four universal serial bus (USB) ports, built-in local area network (LAN), two
personal system/2 (PS/2)-style ports, a serial port, printer port, and audio ports (line-out, line-in,
and microphone).

Internally, the system board provides a Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (SO-DIMM)
socket supporting synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) and a Mini PCI
socket for an optional Mini PCI module. Main system memory is upgradeable to a total of
640 MB of RAM (128 MB on the system board and a 512-MB SO-DIMM). The system board
has an ATI Mobility M6DC graphics chip and 16 MB of video memory.
The PowerMate eco design features easy access to the optical drive, hard drive, SO-DIMM
socket, and Mini PCI socket for easy upgrades and service. A release button at the rear of unit
releases the optical drive from its bay. The rear cover and the hard drive assembly are removable
without tools. Easy access to front panel and LCD panel components makes servicing simple.

The PowerMate eco system has two main parts, the LCD unit and the base unit. See the
following sections for a description of components in these main parts. See Chapter 4 for board
layouts.

LCD Unit
The LCD unit contains most of the system components (see the following figures):
 LCD panel components —located at the front of the LCD unit; includes the LCD front
panel, LCD panel, and power inverter board.
 Operation board —located below the LCD panel at the front of the LCD unit; includes the
power button, brightness buttons, volume control, power LED, optical/hard drive LED, and
connectors for the speaker cables and cable to the system board.
 Speaker assemblies —stereo speakers are located at the front of the LCD unit and below
the LCD panel. Cables connect the speakers to the operations board.
 System board (main board) —located at the rear of the LCD unit and behind the system
board shield; includes the processor, SO-DIMM socket, Mini-PCI socket, PC Card bay, two
USB ports, microphone jack, line-in port, line-out port, and cable connectors (see “System
Board”in Chapter 4 for connector and socket locations).
 Legacy board —located on the inside of the system board shield; provides a serial port, a
PS/2 mouse connector, PS/2 keyboard connector, and a parallel port. The ports are
accessible behind an easy-to-remove cover.
 Hard drive assembly —located at the rear of the LCD unit below the system board. The
hard drive is connected to the system board by a single signal and power ribbon cable. A
pull-tab on the hard drive bracket allows easy removal without tools.
 Hinge assembly —located at the rear of the LCD unit and above the pedestal. The hinge
design allows for easy movement of the LCD unit. It also provides an area for interface
cables to pass through from the system board in the LCD unit to the legacy board in the
base unit.

Base Unit
The base unit contains the following components:
 Optical drive assembly —located at the front of the base unit. The optical drive assembly
provides a bay for an optical drive (CD-ROM drive or combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW
drive).
 Interface board —located at the rear of the base unit. The interface board provides the

Software
NEC Solutions (America), Inc. provides a variety of applications and hardware utilities with the
system to take advantage of the system hardware capabilities.
Preloaded Software
The system comes preloaded with the Microsoft®Windows®2000 Professional/Windows XP
Professional operating system.
On the initial power-on, you must choose the operating system you want to load. The operating
system you choose is the only operating system and is the one that the Product Recovery
program restores.
PowerMate eco Application and Driver CD
Use the PowerMate eco Application and Driver CD to install on the hard drive the applications,
drivers, and utilities provided by NEC Solutions (America), Inc. Also use the PowerMate eco
Application and Driver CD to reinstall the NEC Solutions (America), Inc. supplied software if
the software becomes corrupted. See “PowerMate eco Application and Driver CD”in Chapter 2
for information about installing software from the CD.
The Application and Driver CD includes Microsoft Internet Explorer, Norton AntiVirus™
software, and Adobe®Acrobat®Reader.
PowerMate eco Product Recovery CD
The system comes with a PowerMate eco Product Recovery CD. Should a problem occur that
causes data loss or corruption, you can use the Product Recovery CD to restore the system to its
original factory state. A full system restore loads the operating system and the factory-supplied
software that comes on the hard drive. See “PowerMate eco Product Recovery CD”in Chapter 2
for information about using the restore options.
SoftDVD and CD-RW Software
To take full advantage of both DVD-ROM and CD-RW technologies, NEC Solutions
(America), Inc. ships the following CDs with the combination DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive:
 SoftDVD Software CD —contains SoftDVD drivers and the CyberLink®PowerDVD™XP
DVD software program for playing DVD movies.
 CD-RW Software CD —contains Easy CD Creator®software which allows you to write
information to a CD and to back up information from the hard drive to a CD.
Security
The system has hardware, software, and mechanical security features that offer protection
against unauthorized access to the system and data. The following security features are
available.
Password Security
The BIOS Setup utility includes an option that allows a user to set a user or supervisor
password, or both.
The user password controls booting of the system and controls access to the Setup utility and the
keyboard. User access to the BIOS Setup Utility is limited when a supervisor password is set.
The supervisor password allows full access to the system and the BIOS.
