Theory of operation: The TA-12/HT12 is a stand-a one machine that can process media
into a stacker or tray. The TA-12/HT12 wi process various sizes of media and p ace a
sing e “tab” on the ead edge of the media. The media can vary in ength from 3.6” to
11” and vary in thickness from a C-fo ded sheet of 20# bond paper to a book et of 5/32”
thick.
The TA-12/HT12 wi process media at a speed up to 12,000 pieces per hour depending
on the ski of the operator, the ength (depth) of the media and the type of materia .
When the media is fed, a media sensor detects the ead edge of the media and starts a tab
feeding into position. The media contacts the tab and the exit ro er presses the tab to the
media and carries the media out of the tabber. At the same time, the tab feed stops unti

Section 3 – Operating the Tabber
There are seven steps required to set-up the TA-12/HT12 Tabber to app y tabs to your
media:
Step 1: Load a ro of tabs on the tabber.
Step 2: Set the sensitivity of the Tab Sensor.
Step 3: Adjust the Metering Bracket Assemb y to the media.
Step 4: Adjust the Media Supports and Media Side guides to the media.
Step 5: Test for proper media transport.
Step 6: Test/Adjust for proper horizonta Tab position.
Step 7: Adjust Tab Fo d Position.
Loading Tabs:
1. Remove the Exit Ro er
2. Remove the Tab Ro Side Guide
by pu ing it away from the Tab
Ro Support.
3. Mount the ro of tabs with the tab
eader coming off the ro on the
exit side of the tabber.
4. Rep ace the Tab Ro Side Guide.
5. Unwind approximate y 12 inches
of tabs and remove the first 12
tabs from the backing materia .
6. Thread the tab ro eader behind
the Ree Brake Assemb y and
then in front of the Id er Ro er.
7. Set the Tab Pressure Knob to the
on position (pressure engaged).
8. Whi e turning the Tab Advance
Knob counter-c ockwise; thread
the tab stock eader above the meta ip, up into and between the Abrasive Ro er
and the Pressure Ro er.
9. Continue turning the Tab Advance Knob counter-c ockwise unti you have
enough tab stock eader to feed 2” to 3” through the center of the Tab Take-up
Ree pins.

13
Operating Tip: You wi need to c ear the backing from the Take-up Ree when it
reaches a diameter of about 3”.
10. S ide the tabs stock into the open side of the b ack p astic Tab Guide and Sensor
Assemb y.
Tip: Turning the Tab Pressure Knob to OFF he ps with the a ignment. Return
the pressure knob to the ON position after positioning.
11. Set the Tab Side Guide (post) to
confine, but not bind the tab
backing.
12. When using 1.25” wide or
narrower tab stock; adjust (s ide)
the b ack p astic Tab Guide and
Sensor Assemb y so that the red
center ine is in the approximate
center of the tab stock.
When running tabs arger than
1.25”, adjust (s ide) the b ack
p astic Tab Guide and Sensor
Assemb y so the inside of the
assemb y just begins to touch the
eft side of the tab stock; without
pushing the stock toward the
right. In this case, the red center ine wi not be centered on the tab stock.
13. Rep ace the Exit Ro er by pushing it back into its ho der.
Note: This ro er is removed in next step (Tab Sensitivity Adjustment), so you can
eave it off, if you p an to do this adjustment.
Tab Sensitivity Adj stment
There are two types of tabs designed for
use in the TA-12/HT12 Tabber. Type 1
is a paper tab with a p ain paper backing.
Type 2 is a c ear p astic or trans ucent
paper tab with a b ack or brown backing
behind the tab and a white stripe between
the tabs. Do Not use c ear tabs that have
a white backing behind the tab and a
b ack ine between the tabs.
1. Remove the exit ro er.

14
2. With the tab exposed under the sensor, turn the main power switch ON.
3. Turn the Tab Sensitivity Adjustment knob fu y counter-c ockwise. Then turn it
c ockwise unti the Red LED above the adjusting knob ights. Make a note of the
number that the indicator, on the knob, is pointing at.
4. Turn the Tab Drive Pressure Knob OFF and ro the tabs backwards unti the Red
LED goes OFF. Turn the Tab Sensitivity Knob c ockwise unti the Red LED
ights again. Make a note of the number that the indicator, on the knob, is
pointing at.
NOTE: If during this step the Tab Sensitivity Knob is maxed-out (fu y
c ockwise), but the LED sti does not ight; then proceed as if the second number
is 12. If at any time during the tabbing process doub e tabbing occurs, advance
the setting one more position c ockwise.
5. Set the Tab Sensitivity Knobs indicator ha fway between the two points measured
in the two previous steps.
Example: If the LED i uminates at position 4 with the tab under the sensor and at
position 10 with the backing or white ine under the sensor. The difference
between the two positions is six c icks (10 - 4 = 6).
Divide this number in ha f (6 ÷ 2 = 3).
In this case, you turn the Tab Sensitivity Knob counter-c ockwise 3 c icks, to
position 7, which is ha fway between 3 and 10.
6. Turn the Tab Pressure Ro er ON and use the Tab Advance Knob to advance the
tab unti it starts to pee away from the backing paper.
7. Reinsta the Exit Ro er.
Metering Bracket/Separator Adj stment
This procedure is used to insure that on y one piece of media is fed at a time.
1. Loosen the two thumbscrews that attach the Metering Bracket to its mounting bar.
2. Raise the Metering Bracket and p ace a piece of media under the separator
fingers, then ower the Metering Bracket unti it contacts the media. Make sure
that materia is between a the fingers and ro ers.
3. Tighten the two thumbscrews.
4. Remove the media and make sure the bar is eve and that the separator fingers are
not rubbing against the feed ro ers.

and Stack Rests as required to
support the media.
4. Position the Side Guides so that
they are approximate y 1/16” from each side of the media.
Media Transport Test
Take the time to verify proper media transport before trying to tab. If the media
doesn’t feed correct y, it wi not be tabbed correct y.
Proper Media Transport:
One piece of media is fed at a time.
A sma gap of at east 0.25” is generated between each piece of media.
Media is feeding straight.
1. Start by p acing one piece of media into the hopper, so it is against or just feeding
under the separators.
2. P ace a handfu of media on top of the piece a ready in the hopper.
NOTE: When p acing materia on the Media Support ensure that it is shing ed.
3. Make sure the Tab Switch is “off” (not i uminated), then press the Feed button to
