Introduction ToNevcoScoreboards
Nevco Scoreboard Company is happy to have you as a customer.The universalMPC Microprocessor Controlwill
operate every solid-state scoreboard we have manufactured and is the heartofNevco’s reliability.All game
information may be recalled and reviewed on the control’s brightLED display.By simply changing the keyboard
overlay,you can operate scoreboards ofdifferentsports.Ifyou have other Nevco scoreboards,this feature could
provide a back up in an emergency.Each controlcomes with the appropriate keyboard overlay,operating
instructions,TCS-5 remote time controlswitch and 25 feetofcontrolcable.An optionalC C-3 carrying case,for
convenienttransporting and storage,is available atan additionalcharge.
Four 2-WIRE controlcables are run from the model4-FACE-4511-D scoreboard to the operator’s controllocation.
One MPC controloperates all four faces in synchronization.By ordering extra controls the faces may be run
independently.Model4-FAC E-4511-D scoreboard can also be run synchronized with separate end mounting
scoreboards and or shotclocks.Send for specifications.
The model4-FAC E-4511-D scoreboard should be hung permanently from cables attached to the eyebolts ateach
corner.Service access is from the frontofeach face so the scoreboard can easily be serviced from a floor ladder.
Installation withouta winch system insures lower initialcosts and delivers maximum safety.O ptionalmodelB-1
scoreboard bottom may be ordered when desired for appearance or to contain cables when a winch system is used.
Scoreboard cabinets are aluminum with steelangle iron bracing and steelinternalcorner sections for extra support.
Eye bolts are provided ateach inside corner for permanentsuspension.Scoreboard displays a main timer,scoring
0-199,periods,goalindicators ,penalty timing and player number for two players per team.Displays are large 13 "
high time and scoring numerals each formed with seven LED segments to give figure clarity.Penalty timers and
player numbers are 9 " high.Caption plates are rear lighted.A loud horn is builtinto the face ofeach scoreboard
cabinet.
Size approx.12’1 " square atthe top and 9’6 " square atthe bottom and 6’high (3.68 x 2.90 x 1.83 meters).Approx.
hanging weight962 lbs.(436 kg).
The data from the operator’s MPC controlis transmitted to each scoreboard face through low voltage (class 2)
coaxial,2-WIRE controlcable.The electronics for each scoreboard face are housed in one module located behind
the period caption plate.This module continuously receives,translates and displays the information sentfrom the
operator’s MPC control.The module switches all the power to the lighted displays to lightthe numbers and
indicators on the scoreboard face.
In the following pages you will learn aboutthe equipmentyou have received,pre-testing the equipmentbefore
installation,mounting procedure and connecting power to your equipment, with illustrations to assistyou.Also,
included in the manualare precautions thatyou should be aware of,a trouble shooting guide and Nevco’s FIVEYear
Guarantee.

Installation Instructions
The system includes an operator’s MPC control(if
ordered),the scoreboard cabinets,junction boxes,
covers and cables.To insure thatyour new score-
board system has arrived safely,itis importantto fol-
low the steps below:
STEP 1 Carefully remove the scoreboards from
the packing crates making sure notto pry
againstthe scoreboards in anyway and
in s p e c tfo r d a m a g e .M o d e l

scoreboards each,one crate has the
steelinside corners,one crate has the
aluminum outside corners and the last
crate has the steelangle iron supports.
STEP 2 C arefully remove the operator’s MPC
controlfrom its packing carton and check
for d a m a g e .C o n ta c tth e c a rrie r
im me diately if ship p ing d a m a g e is
presenteither to the scoreboard or the
control.
STEP 3 Remove the period caption plate on each
scoreboard face labeled module location
on printnumber C7404 and check the
electronic module for loose connectors.
To remove the caption plate,simply slide
to the leftor right. Should some cables
become loose or disconnected refer to
drawing C6847.This printis a module
illustration,which shows you where to
plug the loose cable(s) and the function
ofeach module plug.
STEP 4
Pre-mounting Test
Connectthe 25 foot2-WIRE controlcable which co-
mes packaged in the controlcarton from the opera-
tor’s MPC controlto the BNC connector located on
the back ofeach scoreboard.Testeach scoreboard
independently before assembling into a 4-face unit.
STEP 5 Connectthe scoreboards to a temporary
power service one ata time and test
before assembling into a 4-face unit.
Each scoreboard face requires 120V,5A,
50/60HZ.Scoreboards are supplied with
a 2 " x 4 " junction box mounted on the
b a c k for p o w e r c o n n e c tio n .E a c h
junction box contains three wires,one hot
(black),one neutral(white) and a ground
(green).
STEP 6 Plug the MPC controlpower cord into any
120V,50/60HZ outlet. Only 0.1A 12W
required.

Scoreboard Assemblyand Mounting
Drawing D1888 illustrates the assembly ofthe
scoreboard corners.Always use good mechanical
practices,using lock washers as shown.
Drawing D3108 illustrates the installation ofan op-
tionalAD or ADL type sign.Be sure to overlap sections
as shown in the detail.
Drawing C7404 illustrates the eyebolts in each cor-
ner ofthe cabinetto secure wire rope cable,as re-
quired,to supportthe scoreboard from ceiling
anchors.This is a typicalmethod for installing 4-face
scoreboards only.Itis the owners responsibility to in-
sure proper method ofinstallation per ceiling and roof
stress ofeach type ofbuilding construction.
Power ServiceConnection
The power service for each scoreboard face is 120V,
5A,50/60HZ.This allows a 20 percentsafety factor to
eliminate nuisance tripping ofthe circuitbreaker.To
eliminate service problems atsome future date and
the possibility ofover loading the circuitbreaker,we
suggestinstalling a dedicated service or circuitfor
each scoreboard face.The contractor or installation
personnelwill determine length and size ofthe wire to
maintain the voltage needed to supportthe circuit
load.We recommend the power service maintain
120V atthe scoreboard under maximum load.
Scoreboards are supplied with a 2 " x 4 " junction box,
located on the back ofthe scoreboard,for power con-
nection.
Ifconditions permit, the owner may place the power
service and the 2-WIRE controlcable in the same con-
duit. The 2-WIRE cable has a dielectric strength of300
volts or better.Consultthe NationalElectricalCode
and localcodes for the installation ofClass 2 wiring.
Scoreboard Systems
Drawing C5934 illustrates the 2-WIRE connection
between the MPC controland the scoreboards.
Noted on the drawing are items supplied with the
4-face scoreboard installation.The wall box supplied
has an 8 " x 8 " box cover and connectors used to con-
nectthe controlcable to the MPC control.The box
cover should fiton any standard 6 " x 6 " x 4 " box that
has been previously installed in the wall.Use a three
wire convenience outletfor the MPC control.
Drawing C7795 illustrates the 2-WIRE connection of
a 4-face scoreboard with optionalend scoreboards
and shots on goalscoreboards using an CSS-2.
Drawing C7651 illustrates the 2-WIRE connection of
a 4-face scoreboard with optionalend boards and
shotclocks using an CSS-2.

Testing the MPC-5 Control
Disconnectthe scoreboard controlcable from the
control.Turn on the control.Ifthe running display
does notappear,the controlis malfunctioning.
The running display uses all segments (lightbars) in
the display.Ifany segmentdoes notlight, make care-
fulnote ofits location.
Now disconnectany remote hand-held switches
from the control.Enter the following modelcode:
•Press ...3 0 1
The display will now show:
MPC5 R(revision #) OK
The MPC5 OK in the display shows the testofthe in-
ternalmemory passed.The R in the display will be fol-
lowed by the currentrevision number (i.e.R1.0).Ifthe
testfails,make note ofwhatthe display reads and
contactNevco Service Departmentfor help.
To testthe keyboard,justpress one ofthe buttons.
The display will show a number corresponding to the
button pressed.

Plug the remote hand-held time switch TCS-5 into
one ofthe jacks on either side ofthe control.With this
switch in time ON,the number atthe far rightofthe dis-
play should be a 21.
EXAMPLE:
MPC5 R(revision #) O K 21
With the switch in the time O F F position the number
should be a 11.Now,plug the hand-held switch into
the other side ofthe control.You should getthe same
result. A broken wire in the hand-held switch may
cause intermittentproblems.Wiggle the cable ofthe
hand-held switch.Ifthe number changes while doing
this,there is a broken wire.Try this in both switch posi-
tions.
All hand-held switches are tested the same way.The
following is a listofNevco hand-held switches and the
correcttestresults.

Thatcompletes the self test. Ifany ofthe tests fail,
make carefulnote ofthe malfunction to include with
the controlwhen returned to Nevco Scoreboard Com-
pany.

Scoreboard Moduleand Operation Testing
ModuleSelf Test
Because the microcomputer is capable of“mask-
ing”weaknesses in the scoreboard system,itis im-
portantthatitrevealproblems so corrections can be
made before they getworse.A specialcommand is
sentfrom the controlto startthe scoreboard self test
program.Only MPC-2,MPC-3,MPC-4 and MPC-5 se-
ries controls can send this specialcommand.
MPC-5 Series Controls
The MPC-5 controlhas a self testofits own as de-
scribed in the section titled Testing the MPC-5 Con-
trol.When the controlis in this self testmode itis
sending the specialself testcommand to the score-
board.After the controlself testis complete,connect
the scoreboard controlcable to the control.Re-enter
the controlself testmodelcode if controlhas been
turned off.
ControlSignalTest
Ifall is well a “0 " will appear in the Home Score units
position on the scoreboard.The ”0 " is an error coun-
ter.Each time the microcomputer finds an error in the
signalitwill incrementthis counter.This is a good time
to wiggle the controlcables to testfor poor connec-
tions or damaged cables.When signalis lostan “E”
will also appear in the GuestScore units position on
the scoreboard.Ifthe “0 " in the Home Score incre-
ments to a higher value and all cables seem good,
contactthe Nevco Service Department.
LightCircuitTest
The second phase ofthe self testis more interesting.
Remove the controlcable from the back ofthe control.
The “E”described above will illuminate for abouta
second and then the lighttestwill begin.One LED
segmentwill illuminate in all digits in succession for
two rotations.An eightwill then be displayed in one
digitata time,starting with plug one ofthe module for
two rotations.Nextthe captions will rotate twice,start-
ing with pin one ofthe 120VAC circuitplug.You may
check the eightand caption rotation pattern by look-
ing atthe module illustration printto ensure the cables
are plugged in correctly.This pattern will continue un-
til you either replace the coax to the controlor turn off
the power to the scoreboard.
Make carefulnote ofthe caption lamps or LED seg-
ments thatare notilluminating.Turn the power to the
scoreboard off by turning the breaker off or discon-
necting the power cable.Replace all lamps or LED
segments thatdid notlightand restore power to the
scoreboard.Repeatthe procedure above to restart
the lighttest. Contactthe Nevco Service Department
for help.

TroubleShooting Guide
Usually a scoreboard malfunction is a component
failure or bad mechanicalconnection.The trouble
shooting guide is a method oflocating the failure.The
owner can then make the information available to the
Nevco Scoreboard Service Department.
NOTE: TEST EACH SCOREBOARD FACE IN-
DEPENDENTLYTOINSURE PROPER TROUBLE
SHOOTING !
PROBLEM
•Controlseems to operate correctly,however,the
scoreboard does notilluminate.
SOLUTION
•Switch the 2-WIRE cable to the other connector
on the control.
•Check the circuitbreakers associated with the
scoreboard.
•Check the 2-WIRE cable connections atthe
scoreboard junction boxes and all controlpoints.
•Check all fuses on the module located inside the
scoreboard cabinet.
•Use the 25 foot2-WIRE cable to plug the control
directly into the module.Refer to installation
drawing for module location.Use an extension
cord to plug the controlinto a 120V,50/60HZ out-
let.
PROBLEM
•Controldisplay does notilluminate when turned
on and the scoreboard does notilluminate.
SOLUTION
•Check the fuse on the control.
•Check the power outletfor the controlby plug-
ging in another appliance.
PROBLEM
•A single segmentin a particular numeralwill not
light.
SOLUTION
•Turn the power service to the scoreboard off.
Even with the controlturned off,POWER is still
applied to the scoreboard module.
•Remove the frontcover from the LED unitand
check all wire connections and turn on the power
to see if the problem is cured.
•Turn the power service to the scoreboard off and
replace the segmentwith a known good segment
and turn on the power to see if problem is cured.
•Turn the power service to the scoreboard off and
refer to the module illustration,printnumber
C6847,which shows the module plug numbers
and their use.Locate the plug thatis notworking
properly.Check the plug for firm connection.
•Interchange the plug in question with a plug that
works to determine if the problem is in the mod-
ule or LED unit(s).Ifthe LED segmentlights after
exchanging the plugs,the problem is in the mod-
ule.Return the module to the Nevco Scoreboard
Service Departmentfor repair.Ifthe same LED
segmentstill does notlight, the trouble is in the
LED unit.
PROBLEM
•Two segments in the same numeralwill notturn
off even with the controlturned off.
SOLUTION
•The problem is in the module.Make carefulnote
ofthe location ofthe segments and return the de-
fective module to the Nevco Scoreboard Service
Department.
PROBLEM
•Green LED lighton hand-held switch has
stopped blinking or stays continually lit.
SOLUTION
•Plug the switch into the other side ofthe MPC
control.
•Unplug the cable from the switch and plug an-
other switch into its place.
•Replace the cable between the switch and the
control.
Ifthe scoreboard fails to operate properly after fol-
lowing the trouble shooting procedure,contactthe
Nevco Scoreboard Service Departmentor return both
the operator’s MPC controland scoreboard mod-
ule(s) to the Nevco Scoreboard Service Department.
For your protection,insure your shipmentfor full
value.

NevcoGuarantee
Nevco scoreboards are guaranteed for a period of
five (5) years** from the date ofinvoice againstde-
fects in workmanship or materialand will be replaced
or repaired withoutcostto the owner provided the
equipmentor parts (which includes LED segments)
are returned postage-paid to the Nevco factory.
Shipping back to the owner will be surface postage
prepaid exceptif air or specialmethod ofreturn is
specified,then shipping will be freightcollect. Lamp
bulbs are excluded from this guarantee.Nevco Score-
board Company will pay no charges for time or mate-
rialused by others in making repairs or corrections.
Guarantee shall be void if: any alteration or service,
other than unplugging modules or controls,is per-
formed withoutNevco factory authorization; or if the
equipmenthas been connected to incorrectpower,or
is improperly grounded or improperly installed.
Equipmentwhich is subjected to accident, neglect,
abuse,misuse or other naturaldisasters,including
butnotlimited to: fire,wind,lightning,flood is notcov-
ered by this guarantee.
** Nevco wireless equipmentis guaranteed for a pe-
riod oftwo (2) years from date ofinvoice.All other
terms and conditions ofthis guarantee remain the
same.
