The ZR-4 Series 2 Four-Source, Four-Zone MultiZone Receiver
Kit delivers unparalleled features and quality at an affordable
price. It is the perfect home entertainment solution for the light-
commercial, multiple dwelling unit (MDU), and starter home
markets. The ZR-4 Series 2 comes packaged as a complete kit
and includes everything needed to install the system; you just
supply the loudspeakers and the wire. The ZR-4 Series 2 takes
care of everything else: the MultiZone receiver, four weather-
resistant keypads, a hand-held IR learning remote control, and
three IR MicroFlashers®to control connected components. The
ZR-4 is easy to install and requires virtually no programming, so
you’ll have the system up and running in record time.
ZR-4 SERIES 2 MULTIZONE RECEIVER
The ZR-4 Series 2 has features usually reserved for higher-end
MultiZone receivers. These features include a built-in digital
AM/FM tuner allowing the ZR-4 Series 2 to play music right out
of the box without any additional components or wiring. An
advanced digital power amplier delivers eight channels of
robust power (40 watts per zone/20 watts per channel). This
amplier is capable of driving a 4-ohm load, and now features
an enhanced power supply and fan-cooled circuitry. The ZR-4
Series 2 was designed as a four-zone receiver, but if you need
even more zones, the Expansion Port enables you to add
another ZR-4 Series 2 to quickly create an eight-zone system.
SOLO®-4IR KEYPADS
The Solo-4IR is a single-gang keypad with a built-in IR sensor
that offers convenient, basic control for the ZR-4’s built-in tuner
and up to three additional sources. The keypad includes source
selection, local zone volume control, muting, and zone turn off.
In addition, simply pressing and holding the Off key can turn off
the entire system. The sources can be custom labeled to match
the system using the laser-etched Master Keys provided with
each keypad. The keypads are elegantly designed with recently
improved nish and come in white. Color change kits are
available in light almond, bone, and black. But what makes the
Solo-4IR truly unique is its weather-resistant design, making it
possible to install keypads in bathrooms, saunas, or even in
covered outdoor areas like patios. Built into each Solo-4IR is a
plasma and LCD-proof IR sensor for the ZR-4’s included R-6L
hand-held IR learning remote and almost any other IR remote
control. This allows activation and control of sources from
across the room. All Solo-4IR keypads are compatible with both
the original ZR-4 and the ZR-4 Series 2.
R-6L HAND-HELD IR LEARNING REMOTE
This versatile remote provides advanced, automated control of
all four of the ZR-4 Series 2’s sources, as well as a local TV and
an additional local source such as a DVD player or satellite
receiver. The R-6L can create IR macros and comes preloaded
with a library of IR commands for both the ZR-4 Series 2 as well
as many popular brands of equipment. It also learns IR
commands directly from factory remote controls.

BUILT-IN AM/FM TUNER
The ZR-4 Series 2 features a built-in digital AM/FM tuner with 20
preset stations that can now be easily modied. There is no
need for any additional components or wiring to receive quality
radio programming.
4-OHM STABLE DIGITAL AMPLIFIER
The advanced digital power amplier delivers 20 watts per
channel and now features an enhanced power supply and fan-
cooled circuitry. The ZR-4 Series 2 can comfortably drive two
pairs of 8-ohm speakers per zone.
WEATHER-RESISTANT KEYPADS
Install the Solo-4IR keypads wherever your customer desires,
even in wet areas such as bathrooms, saunas, outdoor patios
and near pools. The keypad meets the requirements of the IEC
60529, IP 54 standard, guaranteeing continued performance.
RS-232 AND DISCRETE IR CONTROL
FOR EACH ZONE
Control the ZR-4 with third-party control systems using RS-232
control protocols and/or infrared commands.
ZONE 4 PREAMP OUTPUT
Connect an external amplier to provide more power for a large
area such as a patio, or for a zone where higher than normal
volume levels are desired. The Zone 4 preamp output can be
switched for xed or variable levels.
12V CONTROL OUTPUT
Automate power turn-on and turn-off of connected components
such as a Niles AC-3 Voltage Triggered AC Power Strip, or
trigger a Systems Integration Amplier®to turn on when any
zone is activated.
PAGING INPUT
Connect a telephone system and/or doorbell to provide paging
throughout the home. Overrides all other inputs and can be
congured to work in any number of zones.
PARTY MODE
The Party Mode turns on all zones (or a pre-congured number
of zones) to play the same source of music, instantly lling the
house with music.
HOME THEATER SYNC
The ZR-4 can share source components with an independent
home theater system. When the home theater receiver is on, the
ZR-4 will stay active (even if all zones are turned off) and will
continue to execute the appropriate 12V and IR functions.
KEYPAD COLOR OPTIONS
The Solo-4IR Keypads included in the ZR-4 kit come in white.
Optional color change kits are available in light almond, bone,

WHAT DOES THIS APPLICATION DO?
This application distributes four audio sources (including the ZR-4 Series 2’s built-in AM/FM tuner) to four zones.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE
When installing the Solo4-IR into a
“wet” environment, the unit must have
a complete “positive” seal with the
mounting surface. This is achieved
by using silicone caulking on the
gap around the Decora®style insert
and then installing the wall plate to
complete the seal.
Since the ZR-4 Series 2 does not
include the ability to manage the
power of connected sources, it is
recommended that you use one of
these power management options:
• If the source has latching power
(mechanical power button), use the
Niles AC-3 (FG00242) to manage
power to this device. This type of
source normally has an “automatic
play” feature, which is also required.
• If source has non-latching power,
then use an R-6L (FG01446) at each
keypad location. The R-6L can be
programmed to accomplish the
following sequence:
1. Issue source ON command
2. Issue zone ON command
3. Issue PLAY command or favorite
channel sequence
APPLICATION: STAND-ALONE ZR-4 SERIES 2 MULTIZONE RECEIVER KIT
The ZR-4 Series 2 has a built-in tuner and
can accommodate 3 additional sources.
Each zone can have up to 2 keypads by
using a ZR-KE keypad expander.
GLOBAL FEATURES INCLUDE:
• Party Mode – Press-and-hold a
source button and all pre-configured
zones will turn on to play that source.
•
Paging – Allows front and rear door
doorbell chimes from the Niles DBI-1 or
paging from a phone system, or both,
to be heard through the speakers in
pre-configured zones. The zones of
the ZR-4 that are on will mute so the
doorbell/page can be heard. The zones
that were off will turn on so the doorbell/
page can be heard. When the page
is completed, zones that were on will
automatically begin playing music again
and the zones that were off will again
turn off.
• Zone Linking – Zones can be
“linked” together so that they always
play the same source while retaining
independent volume adjustment. Only
one linked group per chassis.
• All Zones Off – Press-and-hold the
Off button to turn off all zones.
ZONE FEATURES INCLUDE:
• Weather-Resistant Keypads – The
Solo-4IR keypad is weather-resistant
and can be mounted in wet areas such
as outdoors, by showers, and saunas.
When installing in these areas, special
installation techniques are required. See
the critical knowledge section.
•
Bass, Treble, and Variable
Loudness Adjustment – Each
zone can have its own custom tailored
sound.
•
IR Sensor On/Off – The built-in IR
sensor in each keypad can be turned
off. It may be necessary to disable the
IR sensor if the keypad is exposed to
direct sunlight.
ADDING A SEPARATE IR SENSOR
When adding a separate IR sensor in a
zone you must:
• Add a separate IR repeater system and
route the data and ground to the Global
IR input.
• Teach discrete zone commands into the
R-6L from an IR-CS capture station, an
IntelliFile®3 capture station, or a third
party remote.
ZONE CONTROL
The included Solo-4IR keypads offer basic
system operation (e.g. source selection,
volume +/-, etc.). Preset stations on the
tuner can be advanced by pressing the
Radio key when the radio is playing. For
more advanced control, the customer
will need an R-6L remote control in
each zone to activate sources and for
transport control (e.g. power, play, stop,
track +/-, etc.). Source activation can be
programmed into a sequence on the R-6L.

choose up to 4 independent sources,
including the built-in AM/FM tuner, for up
to 8 areas of the house that are controlled
via simple keypads or a remote control.
They also can access features such as
“Party Mode” which allows a source to be
activated in pre-selected zones, and “All
Off” which allows the customer to shut off
the system from any keypad location.
Installation Benets
The ZR-4 Series 2 gives you a cost
effective solution to replace speaker
selectors, volume controls, and IR
systems with a 4-source, up to 8 zone
MultiZone receiver (built-in tuner) in an
extremely small footprint (1U rackspace
high). Each zone can have its sound
custom tailored through the use of zone
independent bass, treble, and variable
loudness.
INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
All CAT-5 wiring must be terminated
using the T568A wiring convention.

3. Set bass, treble, variable loudness,
and IR sensor on/off for each zone

WHAT DOES THIS APPLICATION DO?
This application covers the use of a second ZR-4 Series 2 to distribute the four audio sources (including a built-in AM/FM tuner) to eight
zones.

APPLICATION: ZR-4 SERIES 2 WITH A SECOND CHASSIS (8 ZONES)
The ZR-4 Series 2 has a built-in tuner and
can accommodate 3 additional sources.
Each zone can have up to 2 keypads by

POWERING OUTDOOR AREAS
The amplifier power of the ZR-4 Series
2 is sufficient for indoor applications,
but outdoor applications may require a
more powerful amplifier. A Niles Systems
Integration Amplifier is recommended
when more power is needed. The ZR-4
Series 2 has a Zone 4 preamp output that
provides an audio signal to the amplifier
and can be switched between variable
level (volume level controlled by keypad)
or fixed level (volume level controlled by a
separate volume control).
ADDING A SEPARATE IR SENSOR
When adding a separate IR sensor in a
zone you must:
• Add a separate IR repeater system and

TWO-CHASSIS CONFIGURATION
When using two ZR-4 Series 2’s you have
access to these features and capabilities:
• Global features such as Party Mode, All
Zones Off, and Zone Linking
• Individual tuners for each 4 zones (per
chassis). When activating Party Mode,
both tuners are automatically set to the
frequency selected in the initiating zone.
• Shared and/or dedicated sources for
each chassis
Shared sources must be connected to
each ZR-4 chassis. If the source does not
have multiple audio outputs, a Niles AVDA-
3 distribution amplifier must be
used (see the following cable diagram).

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE
A learning IR remote must be able
to output a sequence of commands
when a single button is selected.
Only two sources can be selected
in any particular zone, the ZR-4’s
built-in AM/FM tuner or a source from
the zone 2 output on the surround
receiver.
Outdoor areas must have an outdoor
remote control. Duplicate sources can
not be used in this configuration (e.g.
two satellite receivers).
WHAT DOES THIS APPLICATION DO?
This application covers the use of a ZR-4 Series 2 to split the zone 2 output of a home theater receiver.

APPLICATION: ZR-4 SERIES 2 SPLITTING THE SECOND
ZONE OF A HOME THEATER RECEIVER
This application is a two zone system,
with zone one being the home theater
and zone two being all other areas fed
by the ZR-4 Series 2 Receiver. Keep in
mind that the customer will have access
to the built-in ZR-4 Series 2 tuner and a
single source from the surround receiver.
ZONE CONTROL
A learning IR remote control must be
used in each area. This control must be
capable of programmed sequences. In
these sequences you will be building a
string of commands that will control the
“specific” zone on the ZR-4 Series 2, the
surround receiver’s 2nd zone, and the
source gear. Below is an example of a
sequence to control a CD player:
1. Surround receiver zone 2 on
2. Surround receiver zone 2 CD input
3. ZR-4 source #2
4. CD on
5. CD play
IR REPEATER SYSTEM
An outboard repeater system must be
used. IR sensors would be located in the
remote areas of the home and connected
to an IR block. The data and ground from
the system would be connected to the
Global IR Input on the ZR-4 Series 2. All
flashers to the sources and the surround
receiver would be connected to the ZR-4
Series 2 flasher outputs.

Key Considerations Customer Benets
This application is easy for customers to
understand and to use since they have
exactly the same control in all areas of the
house. All sources that they have access
to in the home theater are available
to all secondary rooms of the home.
The customer also gets better fidelity
since each area has a dedicated amp
channel plus bass, treble, and variable
loudness control.
Installation Benets
This application allows the use of the
ZR-4 Series 2 to split the zone 2 output
of a home theater receiver into 4 separate
zones with separate amplifier outputs and
independent volume control via IR remote.
This is a simple way to provide the same
sources from the home theater to more
than one room without using volume
controls. Since all control in each zone is
via learning IR remote controls, you can
specify the same remote in all areas of
the house.
INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

When using the preamp output on the
ZR-4 Series 2 exclusively, always set
the unit to disable the internal amplifier
in the configuration. This will direct
more power to the remaining amplifier
zones.
