About the Doorphone
What is the Doorphone?
The Doorphone connects to a digital Meridian Norstar™ telephone port to provide
call notification and handsfree communication from a premise entry location to other
stations on the system.
Door opening functionality can be achieved if installed with one of two optional
hardware devices. If an External Relay Module (ERM) is installed, the call will be
ended immediately after the door is opened. If a Door Opening Controller (DOC) is
installed, the call will continue until QUIT or
®
is pressed.
Before Installation
Check the following environment requirements:
For the Doorphone
Temperature -35°to 60°C (-31°to 140°F)

Step 3: Wire and Mount the Doorphone
The Doorphone can be mounted in a standard recessed double-gang electrical box
for flush mounting or surface mounted using the enclosed optional surface mount
bracket.
The Doorphone should be mounted at approximately shoulder height in the absence
of other specifications, such as compliance with local handicapped access
regulations, if required.
To wire and mount the Doorphone on a wall:
1. Select a location within 300 m (1000 ft) of the KSU. This distance can be
increased to 780 m (2600 ft) with the connection of a Station Auxiliary Power
Supply (SAPS) to the Doorphone.
2. Remove the Doorphone’s face plate.
If the wiring between the Doorphone and the KSU is routed outside a building
such as aerial or buried cable then protection devices must be installed at each
end of the exposed cable for safety and protection. Northern Telecom
recommends the ITW LINX MP1A–90–27 secondary protector for this purpose.

Step 3: Wire and Mount the Doorphone (cont’d)
3. Surface Mounting/Flush Mounting Options:
If the Doorphone is mounted in a location that is unprotected from precipitation
then moisture must be prevented from entering between the Doorphone and wall
surface. Gaskets are supplied for both flush and wall mount installations. No
gasket is required between the Doorphone and surface mount bracket.
For Surface Mounting, first verify the correct orientation of the gasket, thread the
wires through the center hole, then through the surface mount bracket and fasten
the surface mount bracket at the desired location on the wall. Discard the flush
mount gasket.
For Flush Mounting (into an electrical box embedded in the wall), discard the
surface mounting gasket and the surface mount bracket. Slide the flush mounting
gasket onto the main housing assembly.

4. Run standard 3-pair cable from the KSU to the Doorphone location. Use one pair
to connect the "KSU" terminals of the Doorphone to a vacant station port of the
KSU. The second pair can be used to connect an optional DOC, leaving an
available spare pair.
All Doorphone connections are polarity insensitive. Strip wires 6 mm ( 1/4")
before inserting them in the terminal block and tightening.
5. When the surface mount bracket is used, secure the wiring with a cable tie
through the round hole in the rear of the bracket as a strain relief. Fasten the
main housing assembly to the surface mount bracket or electrical box (customer
supplied), then fasten the faceplate to the main housing assembly.

Door Opening Control
Two options are available for convenient door opening control, both requiring
optional equipment:
• External Relay Module (ERM)
• Door Opening Controller (DOC)
Note: The ERM and DOC provide convenient control of locked mechanisms but are
not intended for sole premise security. In high security environments, backup
systems should be used for added protection. Power failure, device failure, wiring
faults and unauthorized equipment access can all contribute to a failed locked or
unlocked situation. Refer to the installation documents for the relevant equipment
option.
The ERM connects to the KSU’s external page port contacts to provide high current
switching capability. Choose the DOC if external paging is to be used on the system.
Note: When an ERM is installed, invoking an external page (
ƒ
fl
¤
) from
any station will activate the release mechanism.
The DOC screw terminals are connected to the Doorphone using one pair of wire.
The DOC receives data from the Doorphone and must be dip-switched for proper
operation.
