Nova StatStripGlucometer Quick Reference Guides
Purpose:
This procedure provides one-page quick reference guides for several basic operations involving
the Nova StatStripGlucose Hospital Meter System. This is intended to help users get access
to easy-to-follow job aides and process charts.
While the information in these quick reference guides are accurate, the materials are presented
in a generalized and outlined format. Thus, staff are encouraged to always refer to the detailed
and complete versions of these procedures.
Safety Precautions:
1. Universal Safety Precautions should be adhered to when handling or using the
StatStripGlucose Meter System to reduce the risk of disease transmission. All parts of
the StatStripGlucose Hospital Meter System are considered potentially infectious and
can potentially transmit blood-borne pathogens between patients and healthcare
professionals.
2. Always wear a new pair of protective gloves before testing each new patient.
3. Only utilize single-use lancing devices. Do not re-use lancets.
4. Follow all operating instructions. Do not attempt to operate any equipment unless
training has been successfully completed

Nova StatStripGlucometer: QC Test
Quick Reference Guide
1. From Home screen,
press Login
2. Enter Operator ID and
press Accept
3. From Patient Test
screen, press QC
4. Scan the glucose
test strip barcode.
5. Scan the QC bottle.
6. Insert Test Strip into the
Meter
7. Touch drop from QC
bottle to strip
8. Result will appear
within 6 seconds
Remember:
a. QC bottles once opened are good for 3 months.
b. Test strips once opened are good for 6 months.
c. Failing one level of the QC requires that BOTH
low and high levels be repeated.
d. If QC fails, troubleshoot:
•Does the tested QC level match to what
was scanned?
•Are the strips/QC in date?
•Was the first QC drop discarded?
•Was the QC bottle mixed well?
e. If QC fails repeatedly, do NOT use meter. Fill out
Point of Care Service Requisition and send this
form together with the meter to the POCT Lab.
9. To accept result,
press Accept
10. Repeat Steps 3 to 9 for
the other QC level.

Nova StatStripGlucometer: Patient or Proficiency Test
Quick Reference Guide
1. From Home screen,
press Login
2. Enter Operator ID
and press Accept
3. From Patient Test
screen, press Accept
4. Scan the glucose test
strip barcode.
5. Enter 1 or 0.
For proficiency test,
enter the CAP number
provided with the kit.
6. Insert Test Strip into
the meter
7. Collect blood sample
as per SOP
8. Wipe off the first drop
of blood
9. If infant is in
incubator, use a
micro-collection
pipette.
10. Touch strip to blood
drop and apply the
sample in one
continuous dose to
prevent “flow error”.
Do not break the
contact until hearing
the beep sound.
Result will appear
within 6 seconds.
11. To accept result,
press Accept. To
reject result, press
Reject.
12. To review other
results, press Review
from Patient Test
screen.

Nova StatStripGlucometer: Newborn Heel Puncture
Quick Reference Guide
Pre-Collection Preparations:
a. Always adhere to Universal Safety Precautions.
b. Verify newborn identification and physician’s order.
c. Warm the site prior to puncture for 2-3 minutes to
increase capillary flow if the puncture area is cold
or circulation is poor.
d. Prepare the Nova StatStripglucometer for patient
test.
Site Selection:
a. Lateral or medial plantar surface of the heel, free of
scars, cuts, bruises or rashes. Shaded areas on
illustration indicate correct puncture sites.
b. Avoid previous puncture site.
1. Press button on
lancet with forefinger
to puncture skin.
2. Wipe off first drop of
blood with gauze.
3. Apply blood from
heel to the white end
of the test strip.
4. If infant is inside
incubator, use a
micro-collection
pipette.
5. Apply blood from
micro-collection
pipette to the white
end of the test strip.
6. Apply pressure to
puncture site to stop
bleeding.

CRITICAL RESULT HANDLING:
a. Verify good sample quality and correct sample application.
b. Critical low glucose is life threatening and immediate treatment is needed.
Notify the most responsible physician immediately. Confirm with a lab-drawn
glucose if indicated to rule out analytical variations/interferences.
c. Critical high glucose needs to be confirmed by repeating the test using a
new test strip. Notify the most responsible physician. If indicated, order a
lab-drawn glucose test.
d. Document result and any actions taken in the patient’s medical record.
7. Dispose of used
materials
accordingly.
