Intended use
This instrument has been designed to be used with Olympus Surgical Microscope for IR (Infrared) and
BL (Blue light) imaging.
Instruction manual
This instruction manual contains essential information on using this instrument safely and effectively.
Before use, thoroughly review this manual and the manuals for ancillary equipment that will be used
during the procedure and use the equipment as instructed.
Keep this and all related instruction manuals in a safe, accessible location. If you have any questions
about any information in this manual, contact Olympus.
Terms used in this manual
Important Information — Please Read Before Use
Surgical microscope (OME-V200)
The surgical microscope designated by Olympus to be used in combination with this
instrument.
LED light source (OME-L200)
LED-based light source designated by Olympus to be used in combination with this
instrument.
WLI (White Light Imaging) observation
This is observation using white light.
IR (Infrared) imaging
This is observation using red light.
BL (Blue Light) imaging
This is observation using blue light.
AGC (Automatic Gain Control)
Function that electrically increases the image brightness when the image brightness
becomes insufficient due to a change in the observation conditions such as the working
distance and magnification.

Custom switch
Custom switch is a generic term for the buttons, keys, and switches to which various
functions can be assigned: the custom buttons 1 and 2 on the touch panel and scope
switches 1, 2, and 3 on the microscope section and foot switches 1 to 6 on the foot switch
unit.
Iris
Function that electrically measures the image brightness.
Automatic brightness control
Function that automatically adjusts illumination light to keep the image brightness
constant even when the observation conditions such as the working distance and
magnification change.
Color adjustment
Color adjustment adjusts the color balance and the chroma on the monitor.
Edge enhancement
Edge enhancement is an image processing technique that electrically emphasizes the
edges of an image to increase sharpness.
Structure enhancement
Structure enhancement is an image processing technique that electrically emphasizes the
detailed patterns and edges of an image to increase sharpness.
IR playback
Function that works by using this product in combination with surgical microscope, video
recorder, and observation monitor, and using the auto playback function of the video
recorder.
Function to display the IR observation image (IR playback image) repeatedly on the
sub-screen at the time of WLI observation and to display the WLI observation image (still
image) on the sub-screen at the time of IR observation.
Infrared Imaging Unit (MAJ-2304)
Unit for IR observation in combination with Infrared and Blue Light Filter Unit.
Blue Light Imaging Unit (MAJ-2305)
Unit for BL observation in combination with Infrared and Blue Light Filter Unit.

User qualifications
The operator of this instrument must be a physician or medical personnel under the supervision of a
physician and must have received sufficient training in clinical procedures of microsurgery using
surgical microscopes. This manual, therefore, does not explain or discuss the details of microsurgery
using surgical microscopes.
For details of microsurgery using surgical microscopes, the physician and operator are requested to
judge from their viewpoints as specialists.
Instrument compatibility
This instrument should be used in combination with the ancillary equipment shown in “System chart”
on page 105. Using incompatible equipment can result in patient or operator injury and/or equipment
damage as well as malfunction.
This instrument complies with EMC standard for medical electrical equipment edition 4
(IEC 60601-1-2: 2014).
Spare equipment
To avoid interruption of procedure due to an unexpected event such as equipment failure in the middle
of operation, be sure to reserve the spare equipment.
Prohibition of improper repair and modification
Never allow a person other than Olympus-qualified personnel to disassemble or modify the instrument,
as this may result in injury of the patient or operator as well as damage to the equipment. Olympus will
not assume any liability for the human accident or equipment damage incurred due to repair by a
person other than Olympus-qualified personnel.

Follow the dangers, warnings, and cautions given below when handling this instrument. This
information is to be supplemented by the dangers, warnings, and cautions given in each chapter.
WARNING
• Strictly observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may place the patient
and medical personnel in danger of an electric shock.
Do not souse or spill a liquid such as water over this instrument. If a liquid is spilt
on it, immediately wipe it. Should a liquid penetrate this instrument, immediately
stop using it and contact Olympus.
Do not prepare, inspect, or use this instrument unit with wet hands.
• Never install and/or operate this instrument under the following conditions. An
explosion or a fire could occur.
The concentration of oxygen is high.
Oxidizing agents (such as nitrous oxide (N2O)) are present in the atmosphere.
Flammable anesthetics are present in the atmosphere.
Flammable liquids are near.
• Do not use the equipment for ophthalmic surgery or during procedures in which the
illumination may make direct contact with the patient’s eye. The strong illumination
can injure the retina.
• Do not use for purposes other than those described in “Intended use” on page 3,
as this may result in injury of the patient or operator as well as damage to the
equipment.

WARNING
• This instrument should be used under the conditions specified in “Environment”
on page 107. Otherwise, imperilment of safety or failure of equipment may result as
well as malfunction.
• The information obtained with IR and BL imaging is merely reference information.
Be sure to perform a comprehensive observation of all required regions by also
using the WLI observation.
• This product may interfere with other medical electric equipment used in
combination with it. Before use, refer to “Appendix” to confirm the compatibility of
this instrument with all equipment to be used.
CAUTION
• Do not use this instrument in any place where it may be subject to strong
electromagnetic radiation (for example, in the vicinity of a microwave therapeutic
equipment, MRI, wireless set, short-wave therapeutic equipment, cellular/portable
phone, etc.). This may impair the performance of this instrument.
• Do not use this instrument in any place with strong magnetic force, or bring
magnetized equipment or magnets closer. This may impair the performance of this
instrument.
• Do not push any part of this instrument with a sharp of hard object. Otherwise,
equipment damage or failure may result.
• Connect various connectors in a dry state without contamination of electrical
contacts. Also, do not touch the electrical contacts inside the connector directly. If
the electrical contacts are dirty or used under wet conditions, the equipment may
malfunction.
• Electromagnetic interference may occur on this instrument near equipment marked
with the following symbol or other portable and mobile RF (Radio Frequency)
communications equipment such as cellular phones. If electromagnetic
interference occurs, mitigation measures may be necessary, such as reorienting or
relocating this instrument, or shielding the location.

Infrared (IR) Imaging
IR observation using IR illumination is possible.

Blue light (BL) Imaging
BL observation using blue light illumination is possible.
Refer to Section 6.4, “Operation of BL imaging mode”.
Adjusting the image
The following functions are provided to facilitate IR and BL imaging.
• Iris sensitivity adjustment

• Brightness adjustment

• Maximum gain adjustment
