CAUTION!
When medium-voltage equipment is operating, certain components are live, other parts may be in movement and some may
reach high temperatures. Therefore, the use of this equipment poses electrical, mechanical and thermal risks.
In order to ensure an acceptable level of protection for people and property, and in compliance with applicable environmental
recommendations, Ormazabal designs and manufactures its products according to the principle of integrated safety, based on
the following criteria:
• Elimination of hazards wherever possible.
• Where elimination of hazards is neither technically nor economically feasible, appropriate protection functions are
incorporated in the equipment.
• Communication about remaining risks to facilitate the design of operating procedures which prevent such risks,
training for the personnel in charge of the equipment, and the use of suitable personal protective equipment.
• Use of recyclable materials and establishment of procedures for the disposal of equipment and components so
that once the end of their service lives is reached, they are duly processed in accordance, as far as possible, with the
environmental restrictions established by the competent authorities.
Consequently, the equipment to which the present manual refers complies with the requirements of section 11.2 of Standard
IEC 62271-1. It must therefore only be operated by appropriately qualified and supervised personnel, in accordance with the
requirements of standard EN 50110-1 on the safety of electrical installations and standard EN 50110-2 on activities in or near
electrical installations. Personnel must be fully familiar with the instructions and warnings contained in this manual and in other
recommendations of a more general nature which are applicable to the situation according to current legislation[1].
The above must be carefully observed, as the correct and safe operation of this equipment depends not only on its design but also
on general circumstances which are in general beyond the control and responsibility of the manufacturer. More specifically:
• The equipment must be handled and transported appropriately from the factory to the place of installation.
• All intermediate storage should occur in conditions which do not alter or damage the characteristics of the equipment
or its essential components.
• Service conditions must be compatible with the equipment rating.
• The equipment must be operated strictly in accordance with the instructions given in the manual, and the applicable
operating and safety principles must be clearly understood.
• Maintenance should be performed properly, taking into account the actual service and environmental conditions in
the place of installation.
The manufacturer declines all liability for any significant indirect damages resulting from violation of the guarantee, under any
jurisdiction, including loss of income, stoppages and costs resulting from repair or replacement of parts.
Warranty
The manufacturer guarantees this product against any defect in materials and operation during the contractual period. In the
event that defects are detected, the manufacturer may opt either to repair or replace the equipment. Improper handling of this
equipment and its repair by the user shall constitute a violation of the guarantee.

1. Description and main characteristics
Ormazabal's mb.m transformer substation is a frame-
mounted prefabricated metal transformer substation,
installed at ground level with outdoor operation, reduced
visual impact, standard-built, tested and supplied from the
factory as a single unit.
The mb.m transformer substation is designed following the
requirements set out in Standard IEC 62271-202.
mb.m is designed for installations in electrical networks
with rated voltage up to 40.5 kV in alternating current. Its
reduced weight and dimensions enable easy handling and
transport.
Optionally the mb.m can be supplied tested to internal
arc IAC-AB 20 kA 1 s, in accordance with Standard
IEC62271-202.
1.1. Elements of the mb.m
Ormazabal's mb.m transformer substation is characterised
by the fact that it includes outdoor medium voltage
switchgear and a metal frame-mounted outdoor-type
transformer unit.
The low voltage outputs model also includes low voltage
switchgear.
The main elements of the mb.m are:
• Medium voltage switchgear.
• Transformer unit.
• Metal frame assembly.
• Low voltage switchgear (in the low voltage outputs
model only).

Other available options are:
• IP1X perimeter protection for the transformer unit.
• Oil collection tank with incorporated valve and lter.
• Low voltage cable bracket.
• Medium voltage cable bracket (clamp with maximum
diameter 95 mm and minimum diameter 48 mm).
• Medium voltage and/or low voltage terminal cover box.
• Closing system for the bottom cable input in the base of
the medium voltage cubicles.
• Lighting inside the medium voltage switchgear
enclosure.
• Outdoor low voltage feeder protection box.
• Terminal box for centralisation of sensor signals and
medium voltage switchgear.

1.1.1. Medium voltage switchgear
The medium voltage switchgear, in compliance with
Standard IEC 62271-200, includes a rust-protected
independent metal outer enclosure with front access.
The medium voltage electrical equipment that can be
incorporated is as follows:
• cgmcosmos (IEC), 24kV - 400/630A system, technical
specications in accordance with general instructions
document IG-078.
• cgmcosmos (IEEE), 27 kV - 600 A system, technical
specications in accordance with general instructions
document IG-182.
• cgm.3 (IEC), 40.5 kV - 400/630 A system, technical
specications in accordance with general instructions
document IG-136.
• cgm.3 (IEEE), 38 kV - 600 A system, technical
specications in accordance with general instructions
document IG-183.
• ga/gae system (IEC), 24 kV - 630 A, technical
specications in accordance with general instructions
documents OI-122492291-ga-Blokschaltanlage-EN
and OI-21023619-09 GA-2K1LSF-10.
Possible configurations:
There are two variants of mb.m:
• mb.m-3f: allows the installation of up to three
switchgear functional units, in accordance with the
following congurations:
-cgmcosmos-lv, cgmcosmos-3l, cgmcosmos-2lp,
cgmcosmos-2lv.
-cgm.3-lv, cgm.3-3l, cgm.3-2lp, cgm.3-2lv.
-ga-3k, ga-2k1ts, ga-2k1lsf; 1400 mm high, variants
1 and 2.
• mb.m-4f: allows the installation of up to four switchgear
functional units, in accordance with the following
congurations:
-cgmcosmos-lv, cgmcosmos-3l, cgmcosmos-4l,
cgmcosmos-3lv.
-cgm.3-lv, cgm.3-3lp, cgm.3-4l, cgm.3-3lv.
-ga-4k, ga-3k1ts, ga-3k1lsf; 1400 mm high, variants
1 and 2.
The access doors to the electrical switchgear are double leaf
with eective opening of:
• mb.m-3f: 1442 x 1840 mm (high x wide).
• mb.m-4f: 2000 x 1840 mm (high x wide).
The doors can be folded to 90º and 180º, with two anchorage
points and a fastening pin for the open positions to prevent
them from being unexpectedly closed.
Furthermore, the medium voltage switchgear can be
ordered with a locking device for the medium voltage cable
input in the bottom part of the enclosure. It has up to three
one-core cable inputs, with a maximum diameter of 50 mm.

1.1.2. Power transformer
[2] 4 MVA in the case of mb.m with low voltage outputs. Approximate maximum power for Ormazabal transformers, in accordance with the
weight, dielectric volume and maximum admissible dimensions of the transformer set out in chapter “Mechanical ratings” of this document.
Check with Ormazabal for solutions for dierent transformer brands or higher powers.
A 5 MVA[2] maximum power transformer is placed on the
metal frame, in accordance with Standard IEC 60076-1,
hermetically sealed completely lled with dielectric uid.

3150kVA) or IG-287 (> 3150 kVA).

1.1.3. Low voltage switchgear
Up to four outdoor enclosures are assembled on the metal
frame, housing the low voltage switchgear to connect the
string inverter cables. This switchgear consists of, among
other elements, enclosed vertical three-pole bases with
dierent rated currents.
For operation and maintenance, see the technical
datasheet supplied with the low voltage switchgear.
1.1.4. Metal frame
The metal frame supports the whole switchgear and allows
it to be handled as well as pulled. The frame is made of
folded hot-dip galvanised proles of dierent thicknesses
and structural proles.
There are two types of frame, in accordance with the power
of the transformer, housing:
• <2500 kVA
• ≥2500 kVA
An additional bracket will be included for the low voltage
switchgear model.

mb.m has a name plate, located in a visible position on the
inside of the enclosure, which indicates the following data
in a clearly legible and permanent manner:

Transport
2. Transport
2.1. Location of accessories during transport
mb.m is supplied with the following components:
• Ormazabal General Instructions document IG-245.
• Cubicle control diagram.
• General instructions for the medium voltage system
used.
• Manual operating lever for the driving mechanisms of
the medium voltage cubicles.
• General instructions for the transformer unit.
• Low voltage board general instructions (optional).
2.2. Road haulage
Transportation is carried out with a standard at-bed truck
or a crane truck. A special or generic transport permit is not
necessary.
Checking transport legislation in each country is
recommended.
During transport, the mb.m must be rmly secured to the
bed of the truck using the four articulated rings tted for
lifting.
2.2.1. Transport agents
All agents, companies and personnel involved in
transporting and handling mb.m must demonstrate
preparation, training, procedures and experience in the
transport of heavy equipment and equipment susceptible
to damage due to violent transport conditions, and must
count on suitable accreditations and certicates in order to
drive the means of transport used.

2.2.2. Selecting the route for road transport
The route chosen for road haulage must be the one with
the best conditions for transporting heavy loads which are
sensitive to damage from impacts, bangs, vibrations and
accelerations.
Routes that reduce the eects of accelerations, vibrations,
impacts and bangs caused by winding roads, changes of
gradient and the cant of the road should take precedence
over shortest distance.
As far as possible, priority should be given to the highest
category of motorways with minimum slope, maximum
linearity and best road surface condition.
mb.m is prepared for transport on at, paved roads without
signicant potholes.
On uneven road sections, transport speed should be
reduced in order to ensure the load does not suer sudden
acceleration and deceleration.
Trac and transport rules in the corresponding
country must be respected in all cases.
If transport for the mb.m is to include untarred road
surfaces, the customer must indicate this circumstance
in the order sent to Ormazabal. Following this
communication, the best solution for transport will be
decided between the customer and Ormazabal.
2.2.3. Checking impact detectors
Ormazabal reserves the right to t impact detectors (or
ask for them to be tted) in its transformers, in order to
provide evidence of circumstances that may damage the
transformer substation during transport.
In accordance with Standard IEC 60076-1, section
5.7.4.2 Acceleration during transport, all Ormazabal
transformers installed in mb.m are designed and built to
withstand accelerations of at least 1 g in all directions (apart
from gravity acceleration in vertical direction) without any
damage.
If transport is not managed by Ormazabal, or is not carried
out under its responsibility, and accelerations in excess
of 1 g are expected during transport, all accelerations
and frequencies must be dened in the order, and the
transformer must be designed in accordance with these
values.
Ormazabal shall not be liable for any damage during
transport whenever there is evidence of transport
conditions that exceed the values dened in the standard
or those specied when requesting the oer and/or order
for the product.
2.2.4. Responsibility
Whenever the conditions described in this document are
not met, Ormazabal reserves the right to reject liability
for any damage caused to mb.m while transporting and
handling.
2.2.5. Packing
The mb.m medium voltage switch enclosure is transported
fromthefactory with polyurethanecornerpiecesontheunit.
The transformer includes the protection elements set out in
the general instructions (for Ormazabal transformers, see
the manual IG-168 (up to 3150 kVA) or IG-287 (> 3150 kVA).
These protection measures must be removed once the unit
is installed and before its commissioning.

Transport
2.3. Sea transport
mb.m can be transported fully assembled in a container.The
container recommended for sea transport is the standard
high cube (HC).
In some cases it may be necessary to remove parts of
the equipment, e.g. the terminal cover boxes of the
transformer unit or its low voltage terminal palms. In
these cases, the parts removed for transport must be
put on pallets and appropriately strapped.
Recommendations for HC transport.
The maximum dimensions of the mb.m are 2296 mm wide
and 2527 mm high. For correct transport of the mb.m,
the four 200 mm-diameter wheels should be tightened
using the M16 bolts supplied with the transformer unit
to the bottom of the four corners of the metal frame, in
accordance with EN 50216. Furthermore, in order to guide
the mb.m inside the container, it is recommended to bolt
two 100 x 50 mm UPN proles (or similar length suitable for
the dimensions of the container) at a distance of 1820 mm
between axles. Four stoppers should be spot-welded to the
proles at the ends of the wheels in order to immobilise
the mb.m.
Securing the mb.m to the container with belts or slings of
the hoisting rings and/or frame is recommended in order
to immobilise it. A belt or sling should be tied through
the lifting eyebolts of the transformer to the walls of the
container.
For other types of sea transport, please contact
Ormazabal.
The wheels installed for sea transport in the HC container
must be removed for correct installation before
commissioning. To remove the mb.m from the HC-type
container, follow the recommended instructions in chapter
“5.4.2. Removing from an HC-type sea container”.

3. Storage
The oor the mb.m is stored on should be even, stable and
levelled.
Do not store in corrosive, saline or aggressive
environments. Check with Ormazabal when stored
for over 3 months.
When the mb.m is stored outdoors and includes an oil lter,
its shut-o valve should be opened. Follow the instructions
set out in point 7 for maintenance.

instructions for medium voltage cubicles and for the
transformer.
