2.2 Intended use
The SMP12 Smart Pyranometer can be used to measure and report the following data:
– Solar radiation
– Temperature of the sensor body

– Inclination angle from the horizontal

2.5 Danger of burns due to hot surfaces
The metal parts of the housing may get very hot when subject to a high ambient temperature (>60°C). If
someone touches the housing, these metal parts may cause burns.

2.6 Improper handling
If the product is not installed, used and maintained properly, there is a risk of injury. The manufacturer does
not accept any liability for personal injury or material damage resulting from incorrect handling.

3 Product description
3.1 Design and function
The SMP12 Smart Pyranometer measures the irradiance of the sun on a planar surface that results from the
combination of direct solar radiation and diffuse sky radiation. Two pyranometers can be used as
albedometers in order to measure the sky radiation and the surface reflection at the same time.
In order to take measurements, the pyranometer requires an appropriate voltage supply and an appropriate
radiation source (light). The pyranometer needs to be connected to an evaluation unit or a data logger to save
the measurements. The pyranometer does not have any internal data memory. It communicates with a
programmable logic controller (PLC) via the RS-485 interface using the Modbus protocol.
The pyranometer’s sensor element consists of a passive thermopile. The thermopile responds to the total
energy that is absorbed by the spectrally non-selective diffuser and heats up. A thermal resistor transfers the
resulting heat to the heat sink (pyranometer housing). The temperature difference on the sensor element’s
thermal resistor is converted into an output voltage that is linear to the absorbed solar radiation.
To allow a steady measurement that is independent of the ambient conditions, the thermopile is shielded by a
glass dome. The glass dome allows direct radiation to be uniformly distributed even as the sun’s position
changes relative to the sensor. In the process, the sun shade reduces the extent by which solar radiation heats
up the housing. Any moisture that penetrates the product is absorbed by the desiccant inside the housing.
To facilitate installation and recalibration, there is a waterproof connection socket on the housing, for which a
matching connector is also delivered. The connector may be delivered loose or with a cable. The pyranometer
can be oriented using the spirit level on the housing and the adjustable feet.

4 Installation and commissioning
4.1 Unpacking the pyranometer
4Carefully remove the pyranometer from the packaging.
4Check that the delivery is complete and undamaged.
4If you find any damage or if the delivery is incomplete, immediately contact the supplier and
manufacturer.
4Keep the original packaging for any further transportation.
4.2 Planning installation
For the solar irradiation to be measured in the entire photovoltaic system, it is necessary to position several
pyranometers in the system. The number of pyranometers required depends on the system’s performance and
ambient conditions.

4.3 Electrical connections
4.3.1 Power connection
The minimum supply voltage for the pyranometer is 10VDC. To ensure reliable performance, a voltage of 12 to
24VDC is recommended. The pyranometer is connected to the power supply using a power supply unit. For the
power supply unit, it is recommended to protect the outlet using a quick-acting fuse with a maximum of 1A.

4.4 Connecting the pyranometer to a computer
In order to define the pyranometer settings, you need to connect the pyranometer to a computer using an
RS-485 converter with a USB port.
NOTE
Damage may be caused by a lack of isolation!
The power supply units of portable computers such as laptops can generate large voltage peaks. This may
cause damage to the pyranometer’s digital interface.
4Make sure that the converter has galvanic separation between the inputs and outputs.

iIn the pyranometer, the blue RS-485 ground is connected to the brown and black earth, and the white power
supply line is connected to the red power supply line.
4Make sure that the power supply is switched off.
4Connect the red to the white cable and the brown to the black cable on the power supply unit.
4Connect the orange, gray and blue cables to the RS-485 converter.
4Align the indentation on the connector with the indentation on the pyranometer’s connection socket.
4Plug the connector into the connection socket.
4Turn the locking ring clockwise and tighten it hand tight to secure the connector.
NOTE!The seal may be damaged by overtightening!
4Switch on the power supply.
4Switch on the computer.
iIt may take three hours for the pyranometer to reach a stable temperature. During this time, the irradiation
measurements may deviate from the final measurements.

4.5 Setup of the pyranometer
The pyranometer is delivered with the following factory settings:
– Modbus baud rate: 19200
– Parity: even
– Data bits: 8
– Stop bits: 1
– Address: 1
The pyranometer’s settings can be adjusted using the Smart Explorer Software.

4.5.1 Checking the COM port
After starting the Smart Explorer Software, you must select the COM port at which the operating system has
installed the converter.
