TooperateyourADLVantageradiointhefieldyouwillneedanantenna,aportablepowersupplyanda
cabletoconnecttoadatasourcesuchasaGNSSreceiver.PacificCrestCorporationanditsauthorized
dealerscanprovideyouwitheverythingyouneedincludingatripodaccessorykitandabattery/charger
kit.
AntennaandAntennaMount
IfyouhaveanantennawithamaleTNCconnector,youcanattachitdirectlytotheRFconnectoronthe
topoftheADLVantage.Wehighlyrecommend,however,thatyouelevateyourRFantennaasmuchas
possible.ThemostcommonsetupissimilartothatseeninFigure1whereanantennacablewithmale
TNCconnectorisattachedtotheADLVantage.Theotherendofthiscableisattachedtoatripodor
elevatedsectionofrangepole.TheRFantennaisthenattachedtotheendofthecable.PacificCrest
offersanantennacablethatattachestostandard5/8‐inchthreadedtripodsandrangepolesand
antennaswithNMOconnectors.
Werecommendinspectingtheantennacenterpush‐pincontacttomakesurethatitmakesgood
contactwiththeantennamount.Agoodantennaconnectioniscriticaltosystemperformance.
AlthoughtransmittingwithoutanantennawillnotcausedamagetotheADLVantage,itis
notrecommended.UsingagainedantennawillraisetheEffectiveIsotropicRadiatedPower
oftheADLVantageradio.MakesuretheresultantEffectiveIsotropicRadiatedPowerdoes
notexceedyourlicensedlimit.

EachADLVantagedata/powercablealsoconnectstheradio(andinsomecasesthedatasource)to
externalpowerviaanSAE‐typeconnector.PacificCreststronglyrecommendsyouusetheADLexternal
battery(PNA02663),whichincludesanSAEconnector.Thisissoldbothseparatelyandaspartofthe
ADLBattery/ChargerKit(PNK01115).

TurningtheADLVantageOnandOff
ToturnontheADLVantage,attachtheradiotopowerusingeithertheprogrammingcable(attachedto
wall/mainscurrent)orthedata/powercable(attachedtotheADLVantagebattery).Onceitdetects
poweronitsdataconnector,theADLVantagewillturnonautomatically,displaytheradiomodem
firmwareversion,theownernameandbereadyforcommunicationwithin5seconds.Ifwall/mains
currentiseverinterrupted,theADLVantagewillautomaticallyturnitselfonandresumetransmitting
datawithin5secondsofpowerrestoration.ToturnofftheADLVantage,eitherdetachitspowercable
orpresstheOn/Offbuttoninthecenterofthefrontpanelforthreeseconds.

TheADLVantageuserinterfaceincludesthreeLEDs,anOn/Offbutton,atwo‐rowLCDdisplay,four
scrollingbuttonsmarkedwitharrowsandacentralEnterbutton.

Thecurrentlyselectedparameterismarkedwithanasterisk.Toselectadifferentchoiceforthe
displayedfunction,scrollupordownwiththearrowbuttonsandpresstheEnterbuttonwhenthe
desiredchoiceisdisplayed.
Therearetwowaystomovetoadifferentfunctionscreen.Whenviewingadisplayonlyfunctionsuchas
DeviceStatusorSignalStrength,simplypresstheleftorrightarrow.Whenviewingadisplay‐and‐select
functionsuchasChannel/FreqorDataProtocol,firstpresstheup/downarrowstodisplaythecurrently
selectedparameter(markedwithanasterisk)inthesecondrow.Thenpresseithertheleftorright
arrowtomovetoanewfunctionscreen.
Note:ifthecurrentlyselectedparameter(shownwithanasterisk)isnotcurrentlydisplayedontheLCD,
andthebacklightisoff(i.e.,youhavenotpressedabuttonformorethan20seconds),youcanscroll
directlytotheselectedparameterbypressingtheleftorrightarrowonce.Tomovetoanewfunction
screen,presstheleftorrightarrowasecondtime.
Tospeedfieldconfigurationandtopreventtheselectionofunsupportedradioconfigurations,theADL
Vantageuserinterfacedisplaysonlythosefunctionparametersthatmakesensebasedonthe
parameterschosenforpreviouslydisplayedfunctions.Whatyouchooseforthedataprotocol
determinesyouroptionsforradiolinkrateandrepeatermode.Forexample,ifyourchanneltableisset
to12.5kHzchannelspacing,andyouselectTT450S(HW)ontheDataProtocolscreen,youcannotselect
aradiolinkrate–infacttheRadioLinkRatescreendoesnotevenappear‐becausetheTT450S(HW)
protocolworkswith12.5kHzchannelspacingonlyat4800bps.AndbecauseTT450S(HW)isaTrimble
protocol,Trimble‐specific“OperationModes”areavailableforselection.TheADLVantageuserinterface

remembersthingslikethissoyoudon’thaveto!Ifyoudecidetoundoanyoftheseselections,simply
presstheleftarrowtoreturntotheDataProtocolscreenandselectadifferentprotocol.
AlthoughtheADLVantageradiomodemsupportsbothGMSKand4FSKmodulation,youcannotselect
modulationtypewiththeuserinterface.Theradioautomaticallyselectstheappropriatemodulation
basedonthechannelbandwidthoftheradio’schanneltable(displayedontheDeviceStatusscreenas
“BW:12.5or25kHz”),thedataprotocolandtheradiolinkrate.Ifyouwanttoselectamodulationtype
firstandthenanappropriatechannelbandwidth,protocolandlinkrate,pleaseuseADLCONFto
configuretheradio.
IndicatorLEDs
TheTXLEDindicatesthattheADLVantageisbroadcasting.InmostGPSRTKapplications,theTXLEDwill
flashapproximatelyoncepersecond.
ThePWRLEDindicatesthepowerstatusandalsoprovidesalowexternalvoltagesupplyindicator.
Whenlit,poweristurnedon.ThePWRLEDwillblinktoindicateiftheexternalvoltagesupplyis
approachingtheminimumvalue.IfthePWRLEDdoesnotrespondtotheOn/Offbutton,thenthelevel
oftheexternalvoltagesupplyshouldbeinspected.
TheRXLEDflashestoindicatethattheADLVantageisreceivingsignalsfromanotherradioorfroma
sourceofinterference.ThedefaultisSignalreceived,butyoucanresettheradiosothatwhenitsRX
LEDflashesitmeansDatapacketsreceived.Youcanresetthemeaningeitherthroughtheuserinterface
orwithADLCONFconfigurationsoftware.Duringnormaloperation,theRXLEDwillflashataonce‐per‐
secondrateindicatingthereceptionoftransmissionsfromthetransmittingradio.IftheRXLEDison
continuously,thenasourceofinterferencemaybeimpactingtheabilityoftheADLVantagetoreceive
data.Tryrepositioningtheantenna,orchangingtoanotherchannelatboththetransmitterandreceiver
toreduceoreliminatetheinterference.
Enclosure
TheADLSentryenclosureisatough,impact‐resistant,aluminum.Itisfurtherprotectedwithachemical‐
andscratch‐resistantpolyurethanecoating.Elastomerendcapsprovidethefirstlevelofshock
protectionfortheinternalcomponents.Aninternalisolationsystemreducestheeffectsofvibrationon
theradioreceiverboard.
AntennaMount
TheintegratedantennamountprovidesanindustrystandardTNC‐femaleRFconnectorthatis
compatiblewithawiderangeofmobilewhipantennas.
BatteryCare
TheADLVantageBattery/Chargerkit(PNK01115)includesa12‐Volt,8‐AHr,deep‐discharge,lead‐acid
battery.Thisbatteryprovidesall‐dayoperationfortheradioandmayberechargedapproximately300
timesoveraperiodof3years.

Toprotectthebattery,theADLVantagewillautomaticallyshutitselfoffwhentheinputvoltagefrom
thebatterydropsbelowadefaultof9volts.Whenthebattery’svoltagefallsbelowauser‐specifiedlevel
higherthanthecutoffvoltage,theADLVantagebatteryStatusscreenwillchangefromdisplaying
“Normal”todisplaying“Low.”ThedefaultLowvoltagewarningoffsetis1volthigherthanthe9volts
cutoffvoltage.Bothlevelsareuser‐definable.Forexample,youcanchangetheADLVantagetodisplaya
“Low”warningwheninputvoltagefallsto11voltsbychangingtheLowvoltagewarningoffsetvalueto

Charging
ThechargersuppliedwiththeADLVantageBattery/Chargerkit(PNK01115)providestwo‐stage
chargingandshouldbeconnectedtothebatteryfollowingeveryfulldayofoperationtoassuregood
batterylifeandperformance.Thefirststagequicklychargesthebatterytocapacityandthesecond
stagetricklechargesthebatterytomaintainafullcharge.
Itisimportanttoperiodicallychargeanybatterythatisstoredforanextendedlengthoftime.Storing
batteriesforanextendedtimeinadischargedstatewilldamagethem.Torechargeauser‐supplied
battery,selectachargerofappropriatetype.

Antenna
Antennaplacementiscriticalforgoodperformance.Rangeandcoverageisdirectlyproportionaltothe
heightofthetransmittingandreceivingantennasinadditiontoantennagain.Wherepossible,selecta
referencestationlocationthattakesadvantageofterraintogetthetransmittingantennaashighas
possible.
Alwaysusethetelescopingantennamastandraisetheantennaashighasispracticalandsafegiven
terrainandwindconditions.
Donotuseagainedantennaifdoingsoincreasestheradio’sEffectiveIsotropicRadiatedPowerbeyond
thelimitofyourlicense.
LineLoss
Lineloss,producedbyRForantennacablesthatconnecttheradioandantenna,decreasestheoutput
power(Wattage)transmittedbytheantenna,therebydecreasingthesignal’srange.Tominimizeline
loss,pleasechecktheloss‐per‐lengthofcabletobeused.Forevery3dBoflineloss,theoutputpower
(Wattage)willdecreasebyhalf.Forexample,ifyouhada35Wradioandhadalinelossof3dBinyour
cable,theoutputpowerwouldbe17.5W,therebyreducingtherangeoftheradio’ssignal.Every6dBof
losswillreducetheradio’seffectiverangeby50%.
PowerSupplies
Maintainbatteriesinafullychargedstate.Theywilllastlongeriftheyarenotallowedtobecome
completelydischarged.Werecommendroutinelyconnectingthebatterytoitschargerafterevery
workingdayandfor24hoursevery3monthsduringperiodofnon‐use.Thiswillassureoptimal
performanceandlongbatterylife.

LCDscreenandthePWRLEDflashesthenumberoftheerrorcode(twoflashesforErrorCode02,
