PRECAUTIONS
Before using this unit please read these operating instructions care-
tully. Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the unit
itself as well as the safety suggestions listed below.
Afterwards keep them handy for future reference.
1. Power Source—The unit should be connected to a power supply
only of the type described in the operating instructions or as
marked on the unit. If you are not sure of the type of power supply
to your home, consult your appliance dealer or local power com-
pany.
Polarization—'f the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power
plug {a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug will
fit into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you
are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the
plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to
replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of
the polarized plug.
Power Cord Protection—AC power supply cords should be
routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by
items placed upon or against them. Never take hold of the plug or
cord if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body when
connecting or disconnecting it.
Overloading—Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords
as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.
Nonuse Periods—When the unit is not being used, turn the
power off. When left unused for a long time, the unit should be
unplugged from the household AC outlet.
Attachments—Do not use attachments not recommended by
the unit manufacturer as they may cause hazards.

Heat—The unit should be situated away from heat sources such
as radiators and the like. It also should not be placed in tempera-
tures less than 5 °C (41 °F) or greater than 35 °C (95 °F).

Placement
1. Ventilation—The unit should be situated so that its location or
position does not interfere with its proper ventilation.. Allow
10 cm (4"} clearance from the rear of the unit.
2. Foreign Material—Care should be taken so that objects do not
fall into and liquids are not spilled into the unit. Do not subject this
unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.
3. Carts and Stands—tThe unit should be used only with a cart or
stand that is recommended by the manufacturer.
The unit and cart combination should be moved
with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and un-
even surfaces may cause the unit and cart combi-
nation to overturn.
4. Mounting—Any mounting of the appliance should follow the
manufacturer's instructions, and should use a mounting accesso-
ry recommended by the manufacturer.
Maintenance
Disconnect this unit from the AC outlet before cleaning.
Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moist-
ened with a mild detergent solution.
Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent
such as alcoho! or benzine.

Service
. Damage Requiring Service—The unit should be serviced by
qualified service personnel when:
(a) The AC power supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
{b} Objects have fallen or liquid has been spilled into the unit; or `
(c) The unit has been exposed to water; or
(d) The unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a
marked change in performance; or
(e) The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.
2. Servicing—The user should not attempt to service the unit be-
yond that described in the operating instructions. All other servic-
ing should be referred to an authorized service personnel.

3. Replacement parts—When parts need replacing, ensure the
servicer uses parts specified by the manufacturer or parts that
have the same characteristics as the original parts. Unauthorized
substitutes may result in fire, electric shock, or other hazards.

form safety checks to confirm that the unit is in proper working
condition.

Use of batteries
e Align the poles (+ and —) properly when inserting the batteries.
e Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries.
Do not recharge ordinary dry cell batteries.
Do not heat or disassemble the batteries. Do not allow them to con-
tact flame or water.
Remove the batteries if the unit is not to be used for a long time.
¢Do not keep together with metallic objects such as necklaces.
Do not use rechargeable type batteries.
ə Do not use batteries if the covering has been peeled off.

Mishandling of batteries can cause electrolyte leakage which can
damage items the fluid contacts and may cause a fire.
If electrolyte leaks from the batteries, consult your dealer.
Wash thoroughly with water if electrolyte comes in contact with any
part of your body.

eEnsure that this unit and other equipment to be connected are switched to the standby mode or off and disconnect the AC power supply cord
before commencing connection.
@Do not block ventilation holes of any of the equipment and arrange thems so that air can circulate freely.
e Read through the instructions before connecting other equipment.
e Ensure that you observe the color coding when connecting audio and video cables.
See page 36 for information about how to upgrade your system with other audio/visual equipment.

eTV volume may be lower when playing DVDs than during television broadcasts. Turn the volume up while playing DVDs and reduce it to the
previous level before switching the source back to television to avoid sudden changes in volume.
When you have finished connection, select the appropriate screen type at the initial setting “6 TV Aspect” according to your television (4:3/16:9)
{= page 11). No changes are needed if you connect the unit to a conventional television (4:3).
Conserving power

and luminance (Y) signals before transmitting them to the
television. (Actual results depend on the television.)

E Before enjoying DVD/Video CD/CD
The menu language for this unit has been set to English, but you can
change the language to French or Spanish (œ “3 Menu Language”,
page 33). English has been used in the examples shown.
Selecting TV screen type
Select the TV aspect, conventional size screen (4:3) or wide-screen
(16:9) according to your television.
Preparations
Ensure connections to your television and adie equipment are
correct.
Turn on your television and other equipment.

Preparations
eEnsure connections to your television and audio equipment are
correct. :
e Turn on your television and other equipment.
e Switch the video input mode on the television to suit the type of
connection you have made (e.g., VCR 2).
{1 Press [POWER (/I] to switch on the
power.
2 Press [4 OPEN/CLOSE] to open the
drawer.
3 Place the disc(s) on the disc tray(s).

e Do not load more than one disc in each tray.
e You can load discs two at a time by pressing [DISC SKIP] to
rotate the carousel.
Caution:
Do not touch the drawer or carousel while they are in
motion, and do not attempt to rotate the carouse! by
hand; doing so could result in incorrect operation of the
unit and/or,.damage to the discs.
4 Press [4 OPEN/CLOSE] to close the
drawer.
After closing the drawer, the DISC 1-5 indicators may light up
even if there is no disc in the disc tray. This will depend on the
disc tray position. The indicator will go out when an empty tray
is in the play position.
Do not close the drawer by hand.
5 To start play from the disc in the play position,
Press [P].
or
To start play from a specific disc,
Press [DISC 1-5] to select the disc
number.
Example: To select disc 1, press [DISC 1].
Play begins.
E Sequential modes (1 or 2)
All the discs loaded in the disc trays will be played according to the
sequential mode (1 or 2) currently selected.
For details on the sequential modes, see page 15.
Pressing [DISC SKIP] may be necessary to proceed to the next disc
after play of DVDs and Video CDs with playback control.
E DISC 1-5 indicators
After the unit reads a disc, the DISC 1—5 indicators are as follows:
No light: No disc
Orange: DVD
The indicator remains green in other cases.

Press [E] during play.
èThe unit records the point where [W] was pressed during play.

To resume play from where you stopped it
(RESUME function)
Press [P] while “©” is flashing on the FL display.
Play will resume from the point where [B] was pressed.
To clear the RESUME function
Press [W] again while “>” is flashing on the FL display.
eThe RESUME function works only with titles for which the elapsed
play time appears on the unit's FL display during play.
This feature remains active if the unit is switched to the standby
mode and then turned back ON.
C Chapter preview function -
DVD
This function plays the first few seconds of each chapter from the
beginning of the title up to the point where operation was stopped.
This makes it possible to review previous chapters.
1. Press [P ] while “>” is flashing on the FL display.
(The message illustrated is briefly displayed.)
2. Press [>] again while the message is displayed on the
screen.
Normal play will commence from the point where operation was
stopped.
e Canceling the RESUME function will also clear the chapter preview
function.
The chapter preview function may not work with some DVDs.
E After operation
When the unit is not in use, remove the discs and press [POWER
()/] to switch the unit to the standby mode.
The unit is automatically switched to the standby mode after
30 minutes or so have elapsed in the stop mode.
(Auto power-off function)
The disc in the play position continues to spin while the menu is
displayed even after the unit has finished playing a particular item,
Stop the unit when you finish viewing to preserve the unit's motor
and your television screen.

A Sequential mode
Two sequential modes are available:
E Sequential mode 1
All the discs including DVDs will be played.
(When the power is turned on, sequential mode 1 is always se-
lected.)
elf there is a DVD or a Video CD with playback control in the
disc tray
When a menu screen appears, perform the operations on
page 13 to continue play.
When the disc finishes playing, press (DISC SKIP] to proceed to
the next disc, if necessary.
m Sequential mode 2
Only Video CDs and CDs will be played.
elf there is a DVD in the disc tray
The DVD will be skipped.
elf there is a Video CD with playback control in the disc tray
Playback control will be canceled automatically. That means no
menu screen will be displayed on the TV monitor and play will
begin from track 1 of the Video CD.
To change the sequential mode,
Press [SEQUENTIAL MODE}.
è Each time you press the button, sequential mode 1 or 2 will be alter-
nately selected.

@When you change sequential modes during play, the unit starts in
the mode you selected from the next disc.

A Changing other discs during play
While playing a disc, you can change the other discs without inter-
rupting play.
{1 Press [4 OPEN/CLOSE] during play
to open the drawer.
2 Press [DISC SKIP] to rotate the disc
trays to the desired position.
The carousel will move clockwise by one disc tray. Then, each
press moves the carousel in the opposite directions by two
disc trays.
3 Change the discs and press
[4 OPEN/CLOSE] to close the drawer.
B Changing a playing disc and
starting play
{1 Press [DISC EXCHANGE] during play
or in the stop mode.
Play is stopped (if pressed during play), the drawer is opened
and the disc tray that was in the play position comes to the
front-left position.
2 Change the discs in the front-left po-
sition.
3 Press [DISC EXCHANGE].
The drawer is closed, the disc tray returns to the play position
and play begins from the new disc.

A Changing soundtrack language

Some DVDs have more than one soundtrack language recorded on
them, and you can change soundtrack language during play. -
Press [AUDIO] during play to display the
current language number.
The number changes each time you press the button.
ə You can also use the cursor buttons [A, ¥] or the numeric buttons
to change the language number.

Press [ENTER].
For your reference
You can only select languages or sound formats if they have been
recorded on the disc you are playing.
|i the RESUME function (= page 14) is canceled or if you stop play
of an interactive DVD, the soundtrack languages revert to the initial
settings (= page 31).
