Description
The latest version of the SP™ 7 has
the new BWX high ower Black Widow
woofers incor orated, as well as a very
nice looking cabinet design. The SP 7X is
a quasi three-way s eaker system
com rised of a air of 15" Black Widow
BWX woofers with Kevlar®im regnated
cones, and a 44XT com ression driver
loaded onto a CH 7 constant directivity
horn.
The SP 7X has a tra ezoidal sha ed
enclosure, which reduces the build-u of
standing waves inside the enclosure,
which minimizes mid-bass and mid-range
colorations due to the cabinet. It is
constructed of 3/4" OSB and is covered
with a durable black car et. The enclosure
corners are reinforced with olymer ca s,
and a black owder-coated ex anded
metal grille covers the lower ortion of the
system to rotect the woofers from
external damage. Built-in ocket casters
on the rear bottom edge ease trans ort
when smooth flooring or aved areas are
resent.
The quasi three-way system consists
of a air of 15" Black Widow BWX woofers
with Kevlar im regnated cones, and a
water-resistant treated cone and dust ca
for su erior environmental stability.
Ca able of over 500 W of continuous
ower handling each (AES Std 2-1984),
the woofers can handle a lot of sheer
ower. The high frequencies are handled
by a 44XT™4" titanium dia hragm
com ression driver, utilizing ferrofluid
cooling, cou led to a CH 7 constant
directivity horn. This horn has a smooth,
even res onse with good attern control.
The 44XT driver features the Radialinear
Planar Phase Correction System, under
US Patent 6,064,745, which rovides
smoother and extended high frequency
res onse.
In ut connection to the system is
made via two 1/4" hone jacks in arallel,
and a 4- in Neutrik switching jack is
rovided for bi-am ing flexibility, while
maintaining su erior signal integrity. The
internal assive crossover features Sound
Guard 44 tweeter rotection circuit, an
advanced to ology crossover with high
erformance com onents, to rovide high
ower handling and reliability. Peavey’s
ro rietary high-frequency driver
rotection circuitry, Sound Guard, rovides
long and medium-term driver overload
rotection when the system is used full-
range, or when it is bi-am ed, without
im airing musical transients or dynamics.
The crossover rovides driver roll-off and
rotection, as well as driver EQ for the
woofers and horn; the sum total is a clean,
clear and smooth res onse. The lower
woofer is rolled off before the mid-range
crossover oint, so it does not interact
adversely with the u er woofer, which
o erates into the mid-range. High-quality,
reliable crossover com onents include
oly ro ylene ca acitors, and linear high
current inductors. The o timal integration
of the crossover with the selected drivers
results in a smooth frequency res onse
from 50 Hz to 19 kHz. A crossover EQ
switch is rovided to tailor the res onse in
the mid-range, roviding a nominally flat
frequency res onse osition, and an EQ’d
osition that ulls the mids back to hel
kee bright rooms from overloading, or to
hel achieve a mellower voicing for those
a lications that refer it, such as DJ use.
With a double 15" woofer based
enclosure and a horn-loaded 2" throat
com ression driver, this system can ut
out some very serious sound levels, and
take 2,000 Watts rogram of clean
am lifier ower, resulting in recise
coverage with awesome clarity and high
reliability.
Frequency response
This measurement is useful in
determining how accurately a given unit
re roduces an in ut signal. The frequency
res onse of the SP 7X is measured at a
distance of 1-meter using a 1 Watt (into
the nominal im edance) swe t-sine in ut
signal. As shown in figure 1, the selected
drivers in the SP 7X combine to give a
smooth frequency res onse from 50 Hz to
19 kHz.
Power handling
There are many different a roaches
to ower handling ratings. Peavey rates
this louds eaker system’s ower handling
using a full-range form of the AES
Standard 2-1984. Using audio band 20 Hz
to 20 kHz ink noise with eaks of four
times the RMS level, this strenuous test
signal assures the user that every ortion
of this system can withstand today’s high
technology music. This rating is contingent
u on having a minimum of 3 dB of
am lifier headroom available.
